KYLE, S.D. (AP) – Family members of Russell Means are planning four services to honor the former American Indian Movement activist.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Means, an Oglala Sioux Tribe member and actor, died at home on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation on Monday. He was 72.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There will be four services because the number is significant in
\nLakota culture, representing, among other things, the four seasons.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The first ceremony to honor Means is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 10
\np.m. Wednesday at the Little Wound School in Kyle, on the Pine
\nRidge reservation.<\/p>\n

Three more ceremonies will take place next year.
\nOne will be at the site of the 1973 Wounded Knee occupation.
\nAnother will be at Wind Cave National Park.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Means’ ashes are to be scattered in the Black Hills, which are sacred to the Lakota.<\/p>\n

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) – Former American Indian Movement
\nactivist and actor Russell Means has died.
\nOglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon says Means died Monday morning at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D. Means was 72.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Means helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee, reveled in
\nstirring up attention and appeared in Hollywood films, including
\n“The Last of the Mohicans.”
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Wanblee native grew up in the San Francisco area. He
\ndeveloped inoperable throat cancer and eschewed mainstream medical
\ntreatments for traditional American Indian and alternative
\nremedies.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S.
\ngovernment’s treatment of Native Americans and demand the
\ngovernment honor its treaties with Indian tribes.<\/p>\n

It was oft embroiled in controversy, partly because of the organization’s
