{"id":96128,"date":"2016-03-02T22:18:38","date_gmt":"2016-03-03T04:18:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=96128"},"modified":"2016-03-05T14:28:10","modified_gmt":"2016-03-05T20:28:10","slug":"blizzard-of-66-50-years-ago-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=96128","title":{"rendered":"Blizzard of &#8217;66, 50 years ago this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(CSi) \u00a0 It was 50 years ago, this week\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/history.nd.gov\/textbook\/unit7_prettygood\/unit7_5_66blizzard3.html\">The Blizzard of 66<\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 made a lasting impression, of what extreme winter weather, specifically a huge blizzard, can have on people, animals, transportation, and the disruption of lives for days beyond the blizzard itself.\u00a0 The storm occurred March 2-5, 1966.<br \/>\nThe blizzard went on for four days, killing 16 people in three states, the Dakotas and Minnesota, with high snowfall amounts coupled with extremely high wind.\u00a0It claimed tens of thousands of cattle and other livestock. \u00a0Winds 70-100 miles an hour drove the snow into drifts sometimes 20-30 feet tall, with snowfall amounts nearly three feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yt watch-title-container\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span id=\"eow-title\" class=\"watch-title \" dir=\"ltr\" title=\"Kermit Sauer Family Film of the Blizzard of 1966 in Valley City North Dakota\">Kermit Sauer Family <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/RYMnVunIBW4\" target=\"_blank\">Film of the Blizzard of 1966<\/a>\u00a0in Valley City North Dakota at YouTube<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/RYMnVunIBW4?rel=0\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center><center>&#8230;..<\/center>Vehicles\u00a0in eastern North Dakota were buried, and after the snow plows inititially came through after the storm, it created canyons, the snow that was pushed to the side of the streets.\u00a0Where the plows hadn&#8217;t come yet, the mode of transportation was snowmobiles, with schools and businesses closed.<br \/>\nRural resident were pretty much stranded in their homes and farmsteads, for several days, until the plows were able to reach them. \u00a0Then came the chore of digging out.\u00a0 The National Guard soldiers helped \u00a0the area dig out\u00a0 using Caterpillars and large loaders.\u00a0Meteorolgists are in general agreement that &#8220;The blizzard of 66,&#8221;\u00a0 was\u00a0 the worst snow storm in the Northern Plains in the 20th century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(CSi) \u00a0 It was 50 years ago, this week\u00a0 The Blizzard of 66\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 made a lasting impression, of what extreme winter weather, specifically a huge blizzard, can have on people, animals, transportation, and the disruption of lives for days beyond the blizzard itself.\u00a0 The storm occurred March 2-5, 1966.
