The high radon levels are found either in the basement or another part of the house.<\/p>\n<p>He found one home in Jamestown that tested below 4 picocuries.<\/p>\n<p>The average outdoor radon level is 0.4 picocuries per liter of air (pCi\/L), according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. An indoor level of 2 pCi\/L is a health risk and anything 4 pCi\/L or higher is a health hazard.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota is considered a Zone 1 state, with all counties having a predicted average indoor radon level greater than 4 pCi\/L, according to the EPA. The odorless, radioactive gas comes from decaying uranium that seeps out of the ground and is a health risk as a carcinogen when it accumulates inside buildings.<\/p>\n<p>He adds, that Radon abatement can be as simple as a polyethylene sheet<\/p>\n<p>Free radon tests are available to pick up at Central Valley Health Distric in Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>Free radon kits are also available from the Department of Health. Do-it-yourself radon mitigation videos can be seen at ndhealth.gov under radon.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown (CSi) The sixth year of Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) will be held at Jamestown High School Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Approximately 103 students from the freshmen class will be participating in a disaster exercise. Students will act as the responders to a mock bleacher collapse scenario with JHS drama students acting as victims. Stutsman County Emergency Manager Jerry Bergquist stated that all current students at the Jamestown High School have participated in the exercise in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Students participating will utilize newly-learned CERT skills under the direction of local emergency response agencies and school staff. Because of the large amount of students, there will be two separate exercises and graduation ceremonies. The Southeast Judicial District includes Barnes, Stutsman, Richland, Dickey, Eddy, Foster, Griggs, Kidder, Logan, LaMoure, Logan, McIntosh, Ransom, Richland, Sargent and Wells counties.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bismarck (CSi) North Dakota early childhood service providers work to help shape the lives and futures of the children in their care. In conjunction with Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, the North Dakota Department of Human Services has recognized two licensed early childhood service providers with the Make a Difference Award for their work in enriching the lives of children and families.<\/p>\n<p>KinderKidz, a licensed facility provider in Dickinson, and Shelly Differding, a licensed group provider in Valley City, were selected for this award based on their licensing compliance, commitment to improving program quality, efforts to meet the unique needs of all children in care, and other criteria.<\/p>\n<p>As a licensed child care group provider, Shelly Differding is able to provide care for up to 12 children. She has been licensed since June 1981. The agency also establishes standards and supports training and education of child care providers.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor\u2019s Child Care Provider Appreciation Day proclamation can be viewed on the web at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nd.gov\/dhs\/services\/childcare\/\">www.nd.gov\/dhs\/services\/childcare\/<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>(CSi) Foster County has declared a fire emergency and burn ban effective immediately.<\/p>\n<p>A release from Foster County Emergency Manager Jess Earle states that the lack of snow and rain combined with warm temperatures and high winds have caused excessive dry down of fuels. This increases the chance of disastrous wild fires that could potentially overwhelm the local Fire Departments resources and cause inordinate equipment wear and damage.<\/p>\n<p>The Foster County Commissioners declared the Burn Ban and Fire Emergency including all of its incorporated cities with the exception for the City of Carrington. The burn restrictions will be in effect until further notice whenever the Fire Danger Rating is &#8220;Extreme&#8221; or a Red Flag Warning has been issued.<\/p>\n<p>Individuals who violate the burn ban will be guilty of a Class B Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,500 and 30 days in jail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; An appeals court has upheld the conviction and sentence of a North Dakota farmer who was found guilty of intentionally destroying potatoes to collect federal farm insurance payments.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A jury in December 2014 found Aaron Johnson, who lived near Cooperstown, guilty of conspiring to receive illegal payments and making false statements. He was sentenced to four years in prison.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say Johnson added chemicals used in septic systems to the spuds to speed up deterioration.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Johnson argued in his appeal that the government&#8217;s key witness was not credible. A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said in an opinion released Wednesday that there was sufficient evidence to support the outcome.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Aaron Johnson&#8217;s brother, Derek, was convicted in the case and sentence to 1 1\/2 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Gov. Jack Dalrymple is asking agency directors to include 10 percent spending reductions in their proposed budgets for the next two years.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Republican governor&#8217;s directive on Wednesday reflects a downturn in tax revenues due to slumping oil prices and activity. The blueprint is the biggest proposed budget decrease for state agencies since Democratic Gov. (AP) &#8211; A proposed school expansion and renovation project in Thompson appears to have failed for the third time in four years.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0Unofficial results show that an $11 million proposal received the support of 59 percent of voters in Tuesday&#8217;s election, but 60 percent approval was needed.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Proposals in 2012 and 2013 also received majority support, but not the required 60 percent supermajority.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The most recent proposal was for new classrooms, a new technical education wing and other improvements. (AP) &#8211; Billings County leaders want more information before deciding whether to approve a proposed oil refinery that would be about 3 miles from Theodore Roosevelt National Park.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The county&#8217;s planning and zoning board last month recommended approval of the plant, but the County Commission on Tuesday tabled taking action. Chairman Jim Arthaud says Houston-based Meridian Energy Group Inc. needs to first firm up plans for things like infrastructure work and emergency planning.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Project manager Dan Hedrington said Meridian is comfortable with the request, and will be back before the commission in June.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Meridian plans a 55,000-barrel-per-day, $850 million refinery between Fryburg and Belfield. (AP) &#8211; Longtime rodeo and ranching leader Dale Greenwood is among this year&#8217;s inductees to the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Greenwood is being inducted in the &#8220;Leader of Ranching and Rodeo&#8221; category. The Cartwright man was a lifetime member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, organized the Association of National Grasslands and served as president of the North Dakota Stockmen&#8217;s Association. They say it&#8217;s the nation&#8217;s first fatal civilian plane crash after an impact with a bald eagle. The pilot, co-pilot and two passengers died when the plane went down April 20 near a small airport about 20 miles north of Anchorage.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) &#8211; A committee of state lawmakers in Oklahoma has given preliminary approval to legislation that would allow people to openly carry guns without a license, training or background checks. The sponsor says he needs signatures from seven lawmakers in order to schedule a hearing. The bill would allow adults over 21 and without a felony conviction to openly carry firearms without a license, training or background checks.
