Valley City (CSi) City Wide Cleanup Week set in Valley City the week of May 9-13.<\/p>\n

Valley City Crews will pick up curbside items at no charge.<\/p>\n

The annual clean up a way help residents get rid of unwanted items.<\/p>\n

Items included in the pickup will include, tree branches, household items, and small landscaping debris,couches, chairs, furniture, shrubs, branches and wood. Paints and liquids can be disposed of in a dry form. Cat litter or sawdust can be used to absorb the liquid. Empty can be left out with garbage.<\/p>\n

Do not bag or box branches, place those items on the boulevard during your regular garbage pickup day.<\/p>\n

Place the garbage into boxes, bags or cans not to exceed 32 gallons or 50 lbs.<\/p>\n

Items NOT being picked up include: medical waste, electronics and appliances.<\/p>\n

Leaves and grass need to be taken to the collection site or to the landfill at no charge.<\/p>\n

Tires must be taken to the transfer station.<\/p>\n

Batteries must be taken to Truck & Auto Salvage or Valley Recycling Center.<\/p>\n

Scrap metal may be taken to Valley Recycling Center.<\/p>\n

Residents can take unwanted appliances to Truck & Auto Salvage or Valley Recycling Center. There may be a fee for refrigeration or freezing units with freon.<\/p>\n

Free disposal of grass, leaves, branches, trees and used motor oil and metal can be disposed of at the Transfer Station all year.<\/p>\n

Valley City (CSi) CHI Mercy Health (Mercy Hospital) has announced it’s celebrating National Hospital Week May 8-14, with this year\u2019s theme of “Health Care From the Heart.”<\/p>\n

Marketing Director Stephanie Mayfield says each day the Hospital staff will be treated to something different. Monday will be build your own yogurt parfait day for breakfast. Tuesday will recognize the staff\u2019s efforts in the Safety First Program this past year during a Hospital Potluck to be held in the Health Education Center from 11:00am-1:00pm.<\/p>\n

The Hospital Staff will also participate in “Mustache Madness” all day Tuesday to have fun while raising funds for a new speaker system for the HEC audio\/visual system.<\/p>\n

Wednesday we will also be celebrating Catholic Health Initiative\u2019s 20th Birthday with a prayer service at 10:30am in the Chapel and will serve birthday cake at 2:30pm in the Cafeteria!<\/p>\n

Thursday will be a fun day with “Throwback Thursday” Trivia (from the year 1996\u2014the year Catholic Health Initiatives was created) at 2:00pm in the Activities area on 2nd Floor.<\/p>\n

Friday we will be “Spirit Day” and employees will dress in Hospital Logo Apparel! The week-long celebration will culminate at 10:00am on Friday, May 13, in the Hospital Cafeteria announcing all of the winners from games throughout the week!<\/p>\n

Employees will have the chance to win fun gifts during the week through different contests like the “Guess the Graduate and Year” contest which we will have on display in the hallway by the cafeteria all week long, “Find the Golden Ticket”, nominate a “Healthcare from the Heart” employee, and a hospital crossword puzzle.<\/p>\n

There’s “Diaper Drive” with proceeds going to Abused Persons Outreach Center by collecting baby essentials in a hospital crib in the lobby all week long.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge Manager Neil Shook says some big birds began returning in late March, which is a couple of weeks earlier than normal.

\u00a0WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) – Authorities have identified a man who drowned in the Red River in Wahpeton as a State College of Science student.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Twenty-year-old David Leinen, of Selfridge, was swimming with four other people Friday night when he experienced some sort of problem and called for help. The others were unable to rescue him.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say a rescue diver recovered Leinen’s body in about 8 feet of water. An autopsy is planned.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the burglar or burglars made a forced entry to the building and took an unknown amount of money.<\/p>\n

\u00a0MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A 54-year-old Minot business owner will serve 179 days in jail for stealing a fifth-wheel trailer in 2013.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Kenneth Earl Karlson changed his plea to guilty on the felony theft of property charge.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutors say Karlson and two unidentified men stole the fifth-wheel from Capital RV in Minot after it had closed.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Karlson was sentenced to five years in jail with all but the 179 days suspended. He is being allowed to serve the time at the Ward County Jail and is being granted immediate work release. Karlson had no significant prior criminal record.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The deadline is approaching for specialty crop grant proposals in North Dakota.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says the state is getting $2.5 million from the federal government to promote the production, processing and use of specialty crops.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Grant applications are due by 4 p.m. Central time Wednesday. Successful applications will be forwarded to the federal Agriculture Department for final approval. The grants will be awarded in late fall or early winter, and projects must be completed by Sept. 30, 2018.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The federal government defines specialty crops as fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, and horticulture and nursery crops. Specialty crops grown commercially in North Dakota include dry beans and peas, lentils, potatoes, confection sunflowers, grapes, honey and various vegetables.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A firm has been hired to remodel the Burleigh County jail and courthouse.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ubl Design received the $38,920 redesign contract from the Burleigh County Commission.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The firm will complete a space assessment needs study, plan a project budget and early design concepts after inmates are moved to a new combined county jail in southeast Bismarck.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The project will convert the 140-bed existing jail into more space for the sheriff’s office, prosecutors, information technology, an alcohol use monitoring program, training rooms and courtroom space.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The plan coincides with a special half-cent sales tax approved by voters to build a multi-county jail with neighboring Morton County.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The new jail is slated to begin operation by June of 2017. It will house nearly 500 inmates.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Builders in Bismarck-Mandan expect recent years’ drop in the number of homes built to level off.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 number of homes built in Bismarck-Mandan decreased about 20 to 25 percent from 2013 to 2014. The same was true from 2014 to 2015.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Statistics gathered by the Bismarck-Mandan Homebuilders Association show that 48 single family homes have been permitted in Bismarck-Mandan through March, thanks in part to a warm spring. That number is similar to the 37 permitted during the same time period in 2015.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Chad Moldenhauer of K&L Homes says the area is back to 2011 or 2012 levels, in which it’s not as frenzied a pace.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers this week is launching a study of flood protection for the Souris River Basin, which includes Minot.<\/p>\n

The corps will look at the cost-effectiveness and environmental impacts of various flood control alternatives. The study is expected to take about three years.<\/p>\n

Long-term flood protection for the region is among a select group of projects the corps has chosen to study this year. U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Heidi Heitkamp say Congress earlier approved $200,000 for the study and is pushing for another $500,000.<\/p>\n

Gov. Jack Dalrymple says the state has provided $225 million so far to help Minot and Ward County in the wake of the devastating 2011 flood.<\/p>\n

Permanent flood protection could cost as much as $1 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota State Fair manager Renae Korslein says the State Fair Center has seen an increase in the types of events it can host, thanks to $5 million in updates and renovations over the past five years.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The fairgrounds in 2016 are booked for more than 2,000 contracted days, which is about five-and-a-half events each day.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Korslein says the goal is not just to offer entertainment, but to bring more visitors to the city of Minot. She says visitors stay overnight, eat in Minot’s restaurants, fill up with gas and go shopping.<\/p>\n

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A 92-year-old woman who has served as a foster grandparent for the past 15 years at a Mandan school is set to retire.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 May 13 is Rhoberta Wegner’s last day at St. Joseph School. She’s known to the kids as “Gramma Rhoberta” or simply “Gramma,” and she has worked on spelling, math, reading and art with them. She helps with grading, gives one-on-one instruction and sews school production costumes.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wegner moved to Mandan 15 years ago, and she saw an ad for the foster grandparent program, which is now under the helm of a North Dakota volunteer organization.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wegner’s retirement follows her son asking her to live in Arizona with his family. She says she’ll miss children who wave at her.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The season runs through the month of May, but it’s not unusual for state wildlife officials to close it early if it appears too many fish will be caught.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The State Game and Fish Department says the season will close at 9 p.m. Central time Monday. Fisheries Chief Greg Power says anglers have been “extremely successful” and that a high proportion of this year’s harvest has been females, further necessitating an early closure.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Snagging is legal in all areas of the Yellowstone River in northwestern North Dakota, and in most of the Missouri River west of the U.S. Highway 85 bridge to the Montana border.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The senior forward was never drafted but had a stellar career at UND that culminated with his being named the most outstanding player at the NCAA Frozen Four, which UND won to claim its eighth national hockey title.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Caggiula tied for eighth in the national scoring race last season with a career-high 51 points despite missing five games. In 162 career games at North Dakota, the Whitby, Ontario, native had 62 goals and 65 assists. Sixteen of his goals were game-winners, tied for third-most in school history.
