{"id":100772,"date":"2016-05-16T22:36:02","date_gmt":"2016-05-17T03:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=100772"},"modified":"2016-05-20T09:07:47","modified_gmt":"2016-05-20T14:07:47","slug":"pedersen-interim-mayor-options-to-fill-mayors-position","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=100772","title":{"rendered":"Pedersen interim mayor, options to fill position"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/PedersenMatt2.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-100798\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-100798\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/PedersenMatt2-150x150.png\" alt=\"PedersenMatt2\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Valley City (CSi)\u00a0 Following the resignation of Valley City Mayor Bob Werhoven last week, Deputy Mayor Matt Pedersen has become the interim Mayor of Valley City.<\/p>\n<p>Valley City officials have these options to fill the mayor&#8217;s position uner the North Dakota Century Code (NDCC 40-09-10.)<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0City Commission\u00a0may call a special election to fill the unexpired term, or may, after 15 days appoint a person to fill the unexpired term.<\/p>\n<p>Another option is upon a petition of 5 percent of the qualified electors (based on the total number of ballots cast in the last city general election) the city commission must call a special election if there is more than 6 months left on the term and the petition has been submitted within 15 days of the vacancy.<\/p>\n<p>The 15 days doesn\u2019t start until the city commission has formally accepted the resignation at a regular or special city commission meeting. (AP-CSi) \u2013 Valley City Mayor Bob Werkhoven has resigned.<\/p>\n<p>The 85-year-old Werkhoven\u00a0said\u00a0 in a\u00a0radio\u00a0 interview Thursday morning (Mat 12, 20160 that recent health issues prompted him to step down from the office he\u2019s held since 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Four city employees earlier this year filed a grievance against Werkhoven for allegedly creating a hostile work environment. He denied the allegations by City Administrator David Schelkoph, Police Chief Fred Thompson, Police Lt. David Swenson and City Attorney Russ Myhre.<\/p>\n<p>Those individuals are represented by Jamestown Attorney, Joe Larson who said his clients wish Werkhoven well in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Larson says he and his clients will decide what direction the grievances may take, if any, in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Werkhoven says the dispute had nothing to do with his decision to resign Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Werkhoven has served Valley City for 14 years, and was elected in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>He won a recall election in January 2012, picking up 1,124\u00a0\u00a0votes or 56 percent of votes cast<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Valley City (CSi)\u00a0 Following the resignation of Valley City Mayor Bob Werhoven last week, Deputy Mayor Matt Pedersen has become the interim Mayor of Valley City.
