The weather service says the microburst that hit eastern Grand Forks and parts of neighboring East Grand Forks, Minnesota, late Sunday had estimated wind speeds up to 110 mph.

Police say there was damage to trees, power lines, homes and vehicles. White Cloud was born July 10, 1996 at Shirek Buffalo. The Shirek family wanted her to be more visible to the public and made a special arrangement with the Museum for her to live with the bison herd on the plains in Jamestown.

Over 20 years, White Cloud had 11 bison calves including one named Dakota Miracle. White Cloud was returned to Shirek Buffalo because her life expectancy is unknown. Typically, a bison can live in captivity on average of 20 to 25 years.

President of the National Buffalo Museum Board, Don Williams says, “We are aware of her health. Summers are hard on her. As an albino, she can’t regulate her body temperature as well in the heat. Shirek Buffalo can care for her during the summer in ways we can’t in Jamestown.”

The news release from the Museum states that they are sad to see White Cloud leave.

“White Cloud has become a special part of the Jamestown community, and we will miss her as part of the museum’s live herd. It’s estimated over 3 million visitors have stopped to see White Cloud during the 19 years she’s been in Jamestown.”

Jamestown (CSi) The Jamestown Tourism Board of Directors has learned that professional voices and revisions were the remaining barriers to completing a project that will bring 70 audio stories via smartphone app to various heritage sites later this summer.

The board agreed with Shawn Brannan on Monday that the professional male voice for the Talking Trail project was good but the delivery was flat. Brannan said he and technology partner Marlo Anderson would be re-recording some of the stories to add more inflexion and are seeking a female voice for some of the sites.

A Jamestown Tourism summer staff member and a student at University of Jamestown, Katianne Brockpahler, is working with board member Liz Hunt to develop historic stories for Talking Trail.

The talkingtrail.com website will have photo icons with a GPS link to each location, Brannan said. The website won’t provide the total narrative a potential visitor would receive by visiting the site but will offer enough information to know what the interest is in the site.

Tourism Director Searle Swedlund said, Interstate Engineering reports that the World’s Largest Buffalo monument could withstand the weight of one more coat of paint before the weight could threaten the structure. An optional quote is to remove nine layers of paint and start fresh with water tower quality paint.

Swedlund said the board should start the conversation about possibly moving the Jamestown Tourism office, rebuilding or partnering with another business or agency to share space. He suggested a third staff member and said the Jamestown Tourism drop-in center and the office did not necessarily need to be in the same location.

Board President Mitzi Hager said the basement in Jamestown City Hall has a lot of room and the board should consider asking the city about that space.

Jamestown (CSi) The cause of the fire that destroyed a Northeast Jamestown home, Saturday evening as of Monday was still under investigation. All AMBER Alert components will be tested. Advance notification is important to avoid misinterpretation of this test as an actual AMBER Alert

AMBER Alerts are recorded on the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s 511 Road and Weather Information System and are displayed on the NDDOT roadside message signs, the nd.gov and AMBER Alert websites, and at North Dakota Lottery terminal sites. Eight AMBER Alerts involving nine children have been issued in North Dakota. Eight children were successfully recovered. Nationwide, AMBER Alert has been credited with the successful recovery of 822 children.

The goal of an AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the community to assist in the search for and safe return of the abducted child.　The AMBER Alert Program is a voluntary partnership between law enforcement, state agencies, the National Weather Service, and the North Dakota Broadcasters Association to activate an urgent bulletin in child abduction cases meeting AMBER Alert activation criteria.　 NDDES, in collaboration with the NWS, uses the Emergency Alert System to provide a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor to statewide radio and television broadcast stations that disseminate the information to the public.　 Please register at www.wirelessamberalerts.org to receive text notifications of actual AMBER Alerts that occur in the area.

Bismarck (CSi) The North Dakota Game and Fish Department emphasizes a simple message to well-intentioned humans who want to pick up and rescue what appear to be orphaned baby animals – don’t touch them. Whether it is a young fawn, duckling, cottontail rabbit or a songbird, it is better to just leave them alone.

More often than not young animals are not abandoned or deserted, and the mother is probably watching nearby. Young wildlife are purposely placed into seclusion by their mothers to protect them from predators.

Anytime a young wild animal has human contact its chance for survival decreases significantly. It’s illegal to take wild animals home, and captive animals later returned to the wild will struggle to survive because they do not possess learned survival skills.

The only time a baby animal should be picked up is if it is in an unnatural situation, such as a young songbird found on a doorstep. In that case, the young bird could be moved to the closest suitable habitat.

Citizens should also steer clear of adult wildlife, such as deer or moose that might wander into urban areas. Crowding stresses animals, and this could lead to a potentially dangerous situation.

In addition, motorists are reminded to watch for deer along roadways. June is one of the peak months for deer vehicle accidents because young animals are dispersing from their home ranges. With deer more active during these months, the potential for car deer collisions increases.

BISMARCK, N.D. An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt head trauma.

Brickle-Hicks appeared in court on Monday, entered his plea and was scheduled for a five-day trial beginning Oct. 24. He could face life in prison without parole if convicted.

He remains jailed on $1 million bond.

FARGO, N.D. Authorities say the incident happened when the victim was asleep at her home, and she woke up when OldRock began to abuse her.

Authorities say OldRock was convicted of sexually abusing a minor in 1998.

BISMARCK, N.D. The photo was shot in Secretary of State Al Jaeger’s office when Marsy’s Law backers left petitions for review. Under state law, the seal can’t be used for political purposes.

Proposal sponsors say the measure would expand the rights of crime victims.

Jaeger says he did not know about the photo being taken and didn’t give permission for the ad to use it. He is also in the ad with Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley’s wife, Kathleen Wrigley.

BISMARCK, N.D. The plan was to use pumps and drainage tiles to flush and recover salt from sites, instead of digging them up.

EERC researcher John Harju says the project site in Renville County is double the size of what had been thought initially. He says the project isn’t feasible now because of additional costs involved.

Harju says the researchers will use the money now to monitor some additional sites affected by oil development.

In sports…

Jamestown (CSi – UJ) Former University of Jamestown pitcher Tanner Dahl was in the line up Monday for the F-M RedHawks against the Texas AirHogs, in Grand Prairie.

Dahl, a West Fargo native has officially signed with the RedHawks.

Dahl wears uniform number 47 for Fargo-Moorhead.

UJ Head baseball coach, Tom Hager, says the RedHawks contacted the Jimmies shortly after their season ended last Thursday in the NAIA national tournament.

Dahl is the all-time wins leader for the Jimmies with a career mark of 26-5.
