Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Fire Department responded to a call Wednesday (Jan 9, 2013) about 1:30 p.m., to an apartment unit at 1510 11th<\/sup> Avenue, Northeast.<\/p>\n

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says hot cooking oil caused smoke in the kitchen area of the apartment unit.<\/p>\n

No fire was reported.<\/p>\n

Three units of the City Fire Department and 20 fire fighters were on the scene about 15 minutes extracting smoke from the kitchen.<\/p>\n

No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Valley City motorists are reminded of Main Street being closed starting Monday January 14, 2013, for about a month.<\/p>\n

The closing is necessary as the Sheyenne Riverbank stabilization project continues.<\/p>\n

Traffic detours include over to Second Street Northwest, from fifth Avenue, Northwest, to Central Avenue.<\/p>\n

Motorists will still be able to access businesses during construction.<\/p>\n

Sheet piling is being placed along the river, continuing 235 feet extending from where the area now leaves off.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle is asking state lawmakers to add three new judgeships and additional court employees to keep pace with increased workloads caused by the state’s oil boom.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chief justice made his appeal Wednesday in his State of the Judiciary speech to a joint session of the North Dakota House and Senate.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VandeWalle says the state has “reached a crisis point where judicial services are suffering.” He says the shortage of judges and court employees in western North Dakota’s oil patch is affecting court systems statewide.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chief justice says case backlogs “drive up local incarceration costs, put the rights of accused in jeopardy, impact businesses’ ability to operate and damage families.”<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VandeWalle says the internships will be with judges chambered in communities that have fewer than 15,000 people.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Confirmed cases of the flu in North Dakota have jumped 72 percent over the past week.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state Health Department said Wednesday that 1,077 flu cases had been reported statewide, up from 625 last week. Outbreaks have been reported in long-term care and assisted living facilities.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Influenza surveillance coordinator Lindsey VanderBusch says the high number of flu cases is happening earlier in the flu season than usual. Officials say it’s not too late for people to get a flu shot.<\/p>\n

\u00a0WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) – The Williams County Commission has approved a route for a truck bypass around Williston that will avoid American Indian burial grounds and artifacts.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The City Commission approved the route late last month. Neither city nor county leaders preferred it because it is longer and will affect more property owners, but County Commission Chairman Dan Kalil tells The Forum that compromises have to be made.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crews last year completed a temporary bypass in the area to help route heavy oil field truck traffic around Williston and ease congestion in the city limits, but it is designed to last only three years.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The preferred plan for a permanent bypass was scrapped after the cultural sites were discovered and tribal officials asked that the route be abandoned.<\/p>\n

\u00a0PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) – A Lakota language immersion childcare program on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation has received a $4,000 grant.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Lakota Immersion Childcare is a full-immersion language initiative for infants and toddlers. It started in November with a small cohort of children under the age of 2.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 Minnesota-based Honor the Earth Foundation awarded the $4,000 grant to the organization.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Peter Hill is the day care’s director. He says exposing infants to the language is a critical step in building a successful K-12 school-based curriculum.

NEW YORK (AP) – Baseball’s all-time home run leader is among three big-name stars who’ve been denied election to the Hall of Fame during their first year of eligibility, because they’ve been tainted by allegations of steroid use. Baseball writers declined to elect Barry Bonds, as well as Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa. In fact, no player received enough votes to win admission to the Hall.

(AP) – A Colorado judge plans to rule by Friday on whether James Holmes should stand trial for the shooting deaths of 12 people at a movie theater last July. Prosecutors say they have shown during a preliminary hearing this week that Holmes acted with deliberation and extreme indifference. Defense lawyers decided not to call any witnesses to talk about his mental health.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NEW YORK (AP) – Eleven people have been seriously hurt after a ferry crashed into a dock in lower Manhattan Wednesday. Scores of people who’d been standing and waiting to disembark were hurled to the deck or into walls by the impact. It happened as the catamaran Seastreak Wall Street slowed following a routine trip from the New Jersey shore and across New York Bay. The cause of the accident is under investigation.\u00a0

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BOSTON (AP) – Massachusetts public health officials are reporting 18 flu-related deaths in the state already this season, and Boston has declared a public health emergency. There have been about 700 confirmed cases of the flu in Boston so far this season, about 10 times more than in the same period last year.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NEW YORK (AP) – A published report says Apple may be planning to introduce a cheaper iPhone. The Wall Street Journal cites people who’ve been briefed on it. The story speculates that Apple could lower the iPhone’s price by giving it an exterior that costs less than the aluminum housing on current models.
