Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown City Fire Department responded to a call Wednesday (Jan 9, 2013) about 1:30 p.m., to an apartment unit at 1510 11th<\/sup> Avenue, Northeast.<\/p>\n

Lt. Sheldon Mohr says hot cooking oil caused smoke in the kitchen area of the apartment unit.<\/p>\n

No fire was reported.<\/p>\n

Three units of the City Fire Department and 20 fire fighters were on the scene about 15 minutes extracting smoke from the kitchen.<\/p>\n

No injuries were reported.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — Valley City motorists are reminded of Main Street being closed starting Monday January 14, 2013, for about a month.<\/p>\n

The closing is necessary as the Sheyenne Riverbank stabilization project continues.<\/p>\n

Traffic detours include over to Second Street Northwest, from fifth Avenue, Northwest, to Central Avenue.<\/p>\n

Motorists will still be able to access businesses during construction.<\/p>\n

Sheet piling is being placed along the river, continuing 235 feet extending from where the area now leaves off.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Confirmed flu cases in North Dakota have jumped 72 percent over the past week. The state Health Department said yesterday that 1,077 flu cases had been reported statewide, up from 625 last week. Officials say it’s not too late for people to get a flu shot.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Grand Forks Air Force Base is one of four finalists to receive an air refueling tanker mission.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Air Force says it will base its new active-duty KC-46A tanker mission at either the North Dakota base, Altus Air Force Base in Oklahoma, Fairchild Air Force Base in Washington or McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Air Force will announce its preferred base in the spring, after doing on-site surveys. Starting in 2016, the base that is chosen will support active-duty KC-46A tankers. Other tankers will be based at an Air National Guard Base somewhere in the country.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They will replace aging KC-135 tankers and KC-10 tankers. The Grand Forks base hosted KC-135 tankers for 50 years before losing the mission at the end of 2010.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chief justice made his appeal Wednesday in his State of the Judiciary speech to a joint session of the North Dakota House and Senate.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 VandeWalle says the state has “reached a crisis point where judicial services are suffering.” He says the shortage of judges and court employees in western North Dakota’s oil patch is affecting court systems statewide.

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota lawmakers are getting a sneak peak at an education proposal that would provide more money to schools while providing property tax relief.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Department of Public Instruction analyst Jerry Coleman delivered a preliminary report Wednesday to the House Education Committee. The legislation would permanently restructure the funding formula for kindergarten through 12th grade education.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Republican Rep. Mike Nathe of Bismarck, chairman of the committee, says the proposal could result in an historic piece of legislation. Says Nathe, “It’s a big deal.”

HURON, S.D. (AP) – A 45-year-old man who escaped from South Dakota’s Beadle County Jail by using a makeshift weapon to hold a guard hostage is returning to prison.

\nCharles Beeney was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in the South Dakota Penitentiary on an aggravated eluding charge from December. In that case, he was accused of stealing fuel from a Jerauld County farm and leading authorities on a chase that ended with him crashing a pickup near Alpena.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Beeney escaped from the Beadle County Jail Tuesday but was captured that night in Sioux Falls. He has a criminal history in Kansas and North Dakota, including a jail escape in North Dakota seven years ago.

Maduro is urging supporters to gather on a street outside the palace to demonstrate their solidarity for Chavez, who remains in Cuba fighting complications after cancer surgery.
