Valley City (CSI) Volunteers are welcome to help out on Thursday August 18, 2016 at 1:30-p.m., at the Prairie Garden Orchard, on 5th Avenue Northeast and 9th Street Northeast near the Valley City\u00a0 playing fields.<\/p>\n

Voluneers are needed to plant 50 to 60 fruit trees, along with \u00a0installing tree protectors and putting down mulch for the trees<\/p>\n

Volunteers should bring along \u00a0bring lead and garden rakes, flat and scoop type shovels and \u00a0gloves, insect spray and sunblock.<\/p>\n

Co-event coordinator Madeline Luke says water and snacks will be provided.<\/p>\n

Also from 5-p.m. to 5:30-p.m. volunteers will be served pizza at the site.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 \u00a0As North Dakota law enforcement agencies announce the annual Labor Day crackdown to prevent impaired driving, they have a new ally: Miss North Dakota, Macy Christianson. After receiving her crown in June, Macy is focused on making a difference during her reign by urging North Dakotans to make the smart decision not to drink and drive. Macy has added the momentum of her platform to the North Dakota Department of Transportation\u2019s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over <\/em><\/strong>campaign this month.<\/p>\n

Macy says \u201cAbout half of the motor vehicle deaths in our state have been alcohol-related\u2014those are lives that could be saved if the driver was sober.\u00a0 Drinking and driving is a decision that can overturn your life\u2014and the life of someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forty-eight law enforcement agencies across the state, including the North Dakota Highway Patrol, will deploy additional patrols for DUI enforcement August 17 through September 5. Along with the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP), participating law enforcement agencies include the Sheriffs\u2019 Departments in Dickey, Eddy, Foster, LaMoure, Logan and Stutsman<\/strong> counties, and Police Departments in Carrington, Jamestown<\/strong>, Oakes and Valley City<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Logan County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Deputy Mike Marolt says \u201cEnjoy your holiday, but remember that law enforcement is working to show zero tolerance for drunk driving\u00a0 The public can help get unsafe drivers off the road\u2014call 9-1-1 to report an impaired driver.\u201d<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Highway Patrol is asking motorists to avoid state Highway 1806 near Fort Rice because of an oil pipeline protest along the road.<\/p>\n

Troopers say traffic delays are expected on the highway that runs through the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in southern North Dakota.<\/p>\n

Opponents of the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline are protesting near a construction zone just north of the reservation. Troopers say motorists should use an alternate route, such as state Highway 6.<\/p>\n

Highway Patrol Lt. Tom Iverson says about 250 protesters were at the site on Monday. He says there are about 30 troopers monitoring the protest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Developers of a $3.8 billion, four-state oil pipeline are asking a federal judge to order protesters in North Dakota to stop interfering with the project.<\/p>\n

Dakota Access filed a lawsuit in federal court on Monday against Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman David Archambault II and other protesters.<\/p>\n

Dakota Access’ complaint alleges protesters are putting the safety of workers and law enforcement at risk.<\/p>\n

The tribal chairman was among several protesters arrested last week and charged with disorderly conduct or criminal trespass at the construction site near the Standing Rock Sioux reservation.<\/p>\n

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe late last month sued federal regulators for approving the pipeline from North Dakota to Illinois.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Some homeowners in a Bismarck neighborhood are questioning the long-term safety of their houses after some backyards dropped as much as 7 feet in June.<\/p>\n

Jim Hopfauf is one of the homeowners affected by the collapsing hill where houses are perched in north Bismarck. Hesays\u00a0 it keeps dropping every time it rains.<\/p>\n

Homeowners and government entities have shared in the cost of a study of the problem. City Parks and Recreation Director Randy Bina says the study suggests rock rip-rap landscaping put in place by homeowners to secure their land is actually making the problem worse.<\/p>\n

The study recommends removing the rock and reshaping the slope.<\/p>\n

The study results are to be presented during Thursday’s Bismarck Park Board meeting.<\/p>\n

HURON, S.D. (AP) \u2014 A Powerball ticket sold in Huron is worth $50,000 in the latest drawing.<\/p>\n

State lottery officials say the ticket matched four of five white ball numbers and the Powerball in Saturday’s drawing to win the game’s third prize. The odds of doing so are 1 in about 913,000.<\/p>\n

Powerball is played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The jackpot for Wednesday’s drawing sits at $94 million.<\/p>\n

Olympic Update…<\/p>\n

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) \u2014 The golden girl of gymnastics will not leave Rio with five gold medals. Simone Biles had a tough time in the balance beam finals as she wobbled during the middle of her routine. She landed awkwardly while completing a front somersault and grabbed the beam with both hands to avoid falling down. Despite all that her performance was good enough to win the bronze, while teammate Laurie Hernandez captured the silver.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old Biles will be in the mix for another gold on Tuesday in the floor exercise finals.<\/p>\n

On the track, Colorado’s Emma Coburn finished third in the women’s 3000 steeplechase to win the bronze. She is the first American woman to medal in the event. Fellow American Colleen Quigley was eighth.<\/p>\n

Two-time Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown has missed out on qualifying for the semifinals in the women’s 200 meters. The 34-year-old, who won the 2004 and ’08 Olympic titles and was a bronze medalist at the last world championships, was third in the last of nine first-round heats and her time of 22.97 seconds was not fast enough to progress.<\/p>\n

Germany has defeated the United States 2-1 in the women’s field hockey quarterfinals. The U.S. failed to medal after a strong start to theh tournament with wins over No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia.<\/p>\n

A check of the medal board shows the U.S. with 72. Broken down Team USA has 26 gold, 22 silver and 24 bronze. China remains second in most medals won with 46 while Britain is third with 40.<\/p>\n

And once again politics have entered the Olympic arena. In judo, Egypt’s Islam El Shehaby has been sent home after refusing to shake his Israeli opponent’s hand. The IOC says Shehaby was reprimanded by the referee and then was sent home by the Egyptian Olympic Committee.<\/p>\n

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) \u2014 Hillary Clinton is attacking Donald Trump for saying he provides on-site child care to employees. At a rally in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Monday Clinton noted that Trump had said he offered care at his businesses. But she added, “like so much of what he says, it’s not true.” The Associated Press reported last week that Trump had made the claim last year in Iowa, but that there was no evidence to back it up. Rather, Trump appeared to be referring to child care programs offered to guests at his hotels and golf club, when he talked about “Trump Kids” and “Trumpeteers.”<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Hillary Clinton’s campaign is questioning the ties between Donald Trump’s top political aide and a pro-Kremlin political party in Ukraine. The Clinton camp says it’s further evidence of Trump’s cozy relationship with Russia. The New York Times says handwritten ledgers found in Ukraine show $12.7 million in undisclosed payments to Paul Manafort from the pro-Russia party. Manafort — who has had several international clients including Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos — denies any wrongdoing. He says he’s a “campaign professional” who has never received any “off-the books cash payment.”<\/p>\n

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) \u2014 Volunteers with boats are part of the rescue effort in badly flooded parts of Louisiana. One man says he’s helped organize volunteer efforts involving roughly 70 experienced boaters who rescued hundreds from flooded communities. State officials say about 20,000 people had to be rescued and 10,000 are staying at shelters. Louisiana’s insurance commissioner estimates 75 percent of those affected by the catastrophic floods do not have flood insurance.<\/p>\n

EASTMAN, Ga. (AP) \u2014 A Georgia police chief is remembering Officer Tim Smith as a “quiet, humble guy” who followed his father into law enforcement. Smith was fatally shot Saturday night while on patrol in Eastman after responding to a call about a suspicious person. A suspect, Royheem Deeds, was arrested early Monday during a traffic stop in northern Florida.<\/p>\n

LEESPORT, Pa. (AP) \u2014 Authorities have determined that a Pennsylvania man shot and killed his wife and the couple’s three young children before taking his own life. The bodies were found earlier this month in the family’s home. Police cay Mark Short had bought the gun just one day after police responded to a domestic dispute call. The shootings took place a few weeks later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
