Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Jan 21, 2013) — Cold weather failed to dampen the enthusiasm and excitement, as over 150 individuals from across North Dakota participated in the 2013 North Dakota Winter Special Olympics, last Friday and Saturday, in Valley City.<\/p>\n

2013 was the second consecutive year Valley City and the area hosted the winter games.<\/p>\n

Competition included Unified Team Handball, Cross Country Skiing, Alpine Skiing, and Snow Shoe racing.<\/p>\n

\u00a0VALLEY CITY, N.D. (AP) – Plans to sell the City Auditorium in Valley City have been put on hold after an assessment determined the building was worth less than expected.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 City Commission decided last November to sell the building to a developer who wanted to turn it into apartment buildings – an investment estimated at $1 million.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Because the historic 1936 building is in a flood plain, federal regulations prohibit anyone from making an investment unless the building is worth at least what the investor puts into it. The City Auditorium was assessed at only $178,500.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 City Administrator David Schelkoph says officials have not determined how to proceed.<\/p>\n

\u3000JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) – The nonprofit Farm Rescue group is accepting applications from farmers in need of help with spring planting.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota-based Farm Rescue helps family farmers in the Dakotas, Montana, Minnesota and Iowa who have suffered a major injury, illness or natural disaster. Volunteers help the farmers plant and harvest up to 1,000 acres of crops.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The effort began in 2006. It helped its 200th farmer last year.

\u00a0MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – Authorities in Mandan are investigating an armed robbery at a local bar.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police were called to the Last Call Bar on Main Street about 9:40 p.m. Monday. Sgt. Jay Grubele says a male reportedly entered the bar, displayed a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the bar’s gambling area. He fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Only a handful of people were in the bar at the time. Police are reviewing surveillance video.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Authorities have arrested a suspect in a weekend shooting in Minot that injured a man.<\/p>\n

The Ward County Sheriff’s Department says 31-year-old Brian Muzzy turned himself in Monday and was arrested on an attempted murder charge. He is being held without bond and did not immediately make a court appearance.<\/p>\n

Muzzy is accused of shooting a man who is believed to be his roommate after an argument at a mobile home court Sunday night. The man who was shot and his condition have not been released.<\/p>\n

Sally Holewa told the Senate Judiciary committee yesterday that nearly 186,000 cases were filed last year. That’s up more than 11 percent from 2011. Lawmakers are considering adding three new judgeships to keep pace with increased caseloads.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – A three-judge appeals panel has scheduled a Feb. 14 hearing in St. Paul, Minn., on a lawsuit over the University of North Dakota’s retired Fighting Sioux nickname.<\/p>\n

A judge last May dismissed the lawsuit filed against the NCAA by nickname supporters at the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux reservations. They claimed they were not included in discussions when the NCAA and the state negotiated a settlement to retire the nickname.<\/p>\n

The supporters appealed to the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The 8th Circuit assigned the three-judge panel to hear the case.<\/p>\n

Sixty-eight-percent of North Dakota voters last June voted to drop the nickname deemed “hostile and abusive” by the NCAA. A separate lawsuit filed by other supporters was dismissed last August.<\/p>\n

Duke is No. 1 in The Associated Press’ college basketball poll after dropping from the top spot for one week.<\/p>\n

The Blue Devils, who fell to No. 3 last week, took advantage of losses by Louisville and Indiana to move back to No. 1, their fifth week on top this season. Duke received 39 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel Monday.<\/p>\n

Michigan, which jumped from fifth to second, had 11 No. 1 votes. Kansas, which had seven first-place votes, and Syracuse, which knocked Louisville out of No. 1, tied for third. Syracuse received eight No. 1 votes.<\/p>\n

Louisville dropped to fifth and was followed by Arizona, Indiana, Florida, Butler and Gonzaga.<\/p>\n

Wichita State, Cincinnati, Mississippi and Miami moved into the rankings this week, replacing San Diego State, Illinois, UCLA and Marquette.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Maloof (mah-LOOF’) family\u00a0 has agreed to sell the team to a Seattle group led by investor Chris Hansen, the league confirmed in a statement Monday morning. The deal is still pending a vote by the NBA Board of Governors.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A person familiar with the decision said that Hansen’s group will buy 65 percent of the franchise, which is valued at a total price of $525 million, and move the team to Seattle and restore the SuperSonics name.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Supporters of longtime Penn State football coach Joe Paterno are marking the 1-year anniversary of his death today with a candlelight vigil. The Hall of Fame coach died of lung cancer at age 85. Paterno’s legacy was badly tarnished by the sex abuse scandal involving Jerry Sandusky.<\/p>\n
