(AP) \u2014 Authorities say a sheriff&#8217;s deputy and a suspect are dead after a shootout Jan 18 in northern North Dakota that involved several officers firing weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Rolette County Sheriff Gerald Medrud says 29-year-old Colt Allery had been with the department for three months after previously working for other area law agencies. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wday.com\/news\/4201825-deputy-29-and-suspect-fatally-shot-after-shootout-nds-rolette-county-2-other-deputies\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0Link to WDAY TV video of Thursday morning news conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The incident began about 6:10 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a stolen vehicle call. Deputies pursued the vehicle for about 15 miles before a shootout began at a remote intersection south of Belcourt, a town near the Canadian border that&#8217;s about 60 miles from Devils Lake.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect also was killed. Medrud says three other deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on standard administrative leave. North Dakota&#8217;s state crime bureau is investigating the case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DelongMelvin2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-114940\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DelongMelvin2-300x202.png\" alt=\"DelongMelvin2\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DelongMelvin2-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DelongMelvin2-260x175.png 260w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DelongMelvin2.png 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wdaz.com\/news\/north-dakota\/4203115-suspect-fatal-officer-shooting-identified\" target=\"_blank\">a\u00a0WDAZ TV news report<\/a>, the alleged suspect in the vehicle theft and shooting was identified by a source\u00a0as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.elickfh.com\/fh\/obituaries\/obituary.cfm?o_id=4080180&amp;fh_id=14585\" target=\"_blank\">Melvin DeLong of Harvey and Belcourt<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 The suspect was killed in the shoot-out.\u00a0\u00a0 The WDAZ report further states that DeLong has a past criminal history.<\/p>\n<p>An online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archives.fbi.gov\/archives\/minneapolis\/press-releases\/2013\/belcourt-man-found-guilty-of-assault-in-fort-yates\" target=\"_blank\">FBI news release <\/a>in 2013 stated that Melvin DeLong of Belcourt\u00a0was involved in an altercation at the Diamond Z Bar in Fort Yates (Standing Rock) and used a vehicle to drive over the victim twice.<\/p>\n<p><em>On October 21, 2013, Melvin DeLong was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Daniel L. (AP) \u2014 Authorities say a sheriff\u2019s deputy and a suspect have been killed in a shootout in northern North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>Four law enforcement officers chased a man in a stolen pickup truck through the Devils Lake area about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The station reports officers caught up to the pickup at an intersection and a shootout began.<\/p>\n<p>Rolette County Sheriff Gearald Medrud says a deputy was fatally shot. He says the suspect was also killed.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the case.
