Valley City\u00a0 (CSi-VCSU)\u00a0 Valley City State University track and cross country coach Chris Johnson announced today the addition of 17 student-athletes for the 2017-18 season.<\/p>\n
All 17 have signed letters of intent to continue their education and athletic careers at VCSU this fall. The group of nine men and eight women includes 13 students from North Dakota, three from Minnesota and one from Florida. All 17 have signed to do track & field, while several will run cross country as well.<\/p>\n
\u201dWe are excited about having the opportunity to work with these student-athletes when they step foot on campus next year,\u201d said Johnson. \u201cThere is plenty of potential in this group of recruits and I look forward to seeing what they can accomplish this year as they wind down their high school careers. I have no doubt they will contribute to our squad in a big way after some training at the collegiate level.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several of the students are school record holders at their high schools, and most are state qualifiers in various events. Highlighting the signings is one of the top high school javelin throwers in the country, Kyle Odegard from Lisbon, N.D. Odegard won the 2016 North Dakota Class B State Championship in javelin. His state championship throw of 201 feet, 8 inches was the top throw in the state in both divisions and was the 13th best throw in the country for high school javelin last season.<\/p>\n
Recruiting is ongoing for the Vikings and Johnson says they hope to add to their strong recruiting class with more signings in the coming months.<\/p>\n
Valley City State University is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and a conference member of the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). In Johnson\u2019s first season as head coach, VCSU had five athletes qualify for the NAIA National Championships last year \u2013 including freshman Seri Geisler who won the NAIA national title in women\u2019s javelin.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist was suspended for six games without pay by the NHL on Wednesday for high-sticking Minnesota Wild defenseman Jared Spurgeon in the face.<\/p>\n
On Sunday in Minnesota’s 6-3 home victory, Spurgeon knocked Nyquist to the ice, and Nyquist came up swinging, using the blade of his stick to spear Spurgeon just below his left eye. Nyquist was called for a double-minor for high-sticking. Spurgeon missed a few shifts while getting stitches in his cheek.<\/p>\n
The suspension will cost Nyquist $158,333. The 27-year-old Swede has seven goals and 22 assists in 56 games this season.<\/p>\n
