The event will be \u201cRead, Seed, Feed to Build a Better World!\u201d with special guest Sarah Wilson & The Wee Wilsons!
\nAt this special Storytime event children will hear stories and sing songs about gardening, soil, and farming, see and touch real vegetables, and take home their very own container garden, AND SO MUCH MORE!

Mandan\u00a0 (CSi) \u00a0 The 2017 Memorial Day Ceremony will begin at noon, Monday, May 29, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, located 6.5 miles south of Mandan on North Dakota Highway 1806. This annual event, hosted by the North Dakota National Guard, honors all deceased American servicemen and women and is free to the public. This year\u2019s theme is \u201c75 years of Honor \u2013 the 164th Infantry Regiment\u201d. The theme commemorates 75 years since this famed North Dakota National Guard unit made history in 1942 when they became the first U.S. Army unit to take offensive action in World War II supporting U.S. Marines on the island of Guadalcanal.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Participants should arrive early due to anticipated crowds. Lawn chairs are encouraged as seating is limited. Due to the large attendance anticipated and limited parking near the ceremony area, handicap-marked vehicles are encouraged to arrive before 11 a.m. Shuttle vans marked with yellow flashing lights on top will be available to transport attendees from parking areas to the ceremony. Attendees are encouraged not to drive large vehicles, such as recreational vehicles, campers or tow trailers due to constrained parking.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Individuals not attending the ceremony, but dropping off flowers for Memorial Day grave decorations, need to arrive by 10:00 a.m.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s keynote speaker is Staff Sgt. Louis Hanson, a Veteran of the 164th Infantry Regiment during World War II.\u00a0 The emcee is Col. Thomas \u201cBritt\u201d Hatley, commander of the North Dakota Air National Guard\u2019s 119th Wing in Fargo. Their biographies are in the attached program.<\/p>\n

Scheduled to render welcoming remarks are Sen. John Hoeven, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, Lt. Gov. Brent Sanford and Maj. Gen. Alan S. Dohrmann, N.D. National Guard adjutant general.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters are scheduled to open the ceremony with a flyover. This aerial display, flown by Soldiers of the North Dakota National Guard, is a formal salute to the fallen military members at the cemetery.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The North Dakota Army National Guard\u2019s Fargo-based 188th Army Band\u2019s \u201cBrass Quintet\u201d will perform \u201cThe Battle Hymn of the Republic\u201d as well as pre-ceremony music. Also participating in the ceremony are local Veteran organizations and the Bismarck Mounted Police, who will feature a caparisoned riderless horse with boots reversed in the stirrups to symbolize a fallen warrior that can no longer ride into battle.<\/p>\n

The national anthem will be performed by Mr. Clyde Bauman and Taps by Mr. Harrison Fuller. AMVETs Post 9 will render a rifle salute volley and the North Dakota National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team will execute a 21-gun cannon salute with a World War I-era French 75-millimeter cannon. The most reverent David D. Kagan, Bishop of Bismarck and Chaplain (Col.) John Flowers, North Dakota National Guard, will render Memorial Day prayers.<\/p>\n

Also in conjunction with Memorial Day, Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park is hosting a Military Appreciation Day by offering free admission to military members, veterans and their families. In support of the Memorial Day ceremony at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, the Viet Nam Vets\/Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club is organizing a Memorial Day Veterans Honor Run at \u201cThe Shop\u201d (131 Airport Road) in Bismarck. Participants will leave Bismarck at 11 a.m., head west on Main Street, cross the Liberty Memorial Bridge to Mandan\u2019s Memorial Highway. After turning west on Mandan\u2019s 3rd Street SE, the motorcyclists will head south on North Dakota Highway 1806 until they reach the N.D. Veterans Cemetery. To participate in the run, please assemble between 10:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. All motorcyclists are invited to participate and no pre-coordination is required.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota Veterans Cemetery was established by an act of the 1989 North Dakota Legislative Assembly. The cemetery was opened July 1992, and is operated by the office of the North Dakota adjutant general.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A former Minot neurosurgeon facing federal sex abuse charges has been sentenced to three years in prison.<\/p>\n
Marc Eichler was accused of exchanging sexually explicit texts and photos in 2015 with two girls, ages 12 and 13. He also was accused of providing one of the girls with gifts and paying for hotel rooms for the girl and her friends as incentive for her not to talk about the alleged abuse.<\/p>\n
Eichler pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court to one count of possessing child pornography, and prosecutors dropped several other charges.<\/p>\n
North Dakota’s medical board earlier suspended Eichler’s license to practice indefinitely, citing unprofessional conduct.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump’s budget proposal includes $27 million to construct an indoor firing range at Minot Air Force Base.<\/p>\n
U.S. Sen. John Hoeven says the base’s existing outdoor range doesn’t support Air Force training requirements, and isn’t safe. He says it’s frequently shut down due to weather, air quality concerns or maintenance.<\/p>\n
Hoeven is a member of the Senate Military Construction Appropriations Committee.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota is taking suggestions for preserving the current governor’s residence, but only for a short time before going through with plans to tear it down.<\/p>\n
The state’s facility management director, John Boyle, says an advertisement will go out in June to receive the proposals for moving and preserving the 10,000-square-foot home completed in 1960. If no proposals come in by mid-July, the home will be demolished.<\/p>\n
The Legislature authorized $4 million from the state’s Capitol Building Fund and $1 million from private donations to construct a new 13,600-square-foot governor’s mansion.<\/p>\n
Supporters say building a new official home for the governor is more cost-effective than renovating the aging residence. Work is on track for the governor to move in to a new home by Thanksgiving.<\/p>\n

Officials say the goal is to more closely simulate a North Korean ICBM aimed at the U.S. homeland. The importance of such testing has grown with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s threats to field a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching American territory.<\/p>\n
TAORMINA, Italy (AP) \u2014 A top White House official says President Donald Trump’s views on climate change are “evolving” following his discussions with European leaders who are pushing him to stay in the Paris climate accord. Economic adviser Gary Cohn says Trump feels “much more knowledgeable” about the matter following his meetings Friday with leaders at the Group of 7 meeting in Sicily.<\/p>\n
TAORMINA, Italy (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have met on the heels of Trump criticizing the Germans on trade. Trump and Merkel met on the sidelines of a summit in Sicily on Friday, a day after Trump reportedly said Germany was “bad” for having a large trade surplus with the United States. A Trump aide says the president was misquoted.<\/p>\n
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) \u2014 More than a dozen states this year have passed “Blue Lives Matter” laws that come down even harder on crimes against law enforcement officers. The new laws came in reaction to a spike in deadly attacks on police last year. Some civil rights activists fear the measures could set back police-community relations.<\/p>\n
