FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A contract worker painting stripes on a runway at Fargo’s Hector International Airport was struck and killed by an airport vehicle.<\/p>\n

Airport Authority Executive Director Shawn Dobberstein says the man who died was in a small, specialty vehicle, doing routine runway maintenance about 12:30 a.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

The man wasn’t immediately identified. Police say he died at the scene.<\/p>\n

The incident did not affect any air traffic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation has announced that full-time monitoring of the Ward County Jail is ending.<\/p>\n

The decision announced Friday followed a day-long inspection of the jail by the department last week.<\/p>\n

The Minot Daily News reports that the monitoring began more than two years ago, following an investigation into the October 2014 death of inmate Dustin Irwin. The investigation revealed various jail compliance violations.<\/p>\n

The DOCR says the jail “has made significant progress since the Non-Compliance Order issued on December 18, 2014.”<\/p>\n

The Ward County Jail has made improvements such as revising its policies and bettering medical services to address violations found in its care delivery.<\/p>\n

To ensure continued compliance, the DOCR will complete on-site monitoring of the jail twice per month.
\nJAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Farmers Union is investing $500,000 in a soybean processing plant to be built at Spiritwood.<\/p>\n

Minnesota Soybean Processors is spearheading the $240 million project on 150 acres in eastern North Dakota. The plant is to process 125,000 bushels of soybeans per day into oil, meal and fuel.<\/p>\n

North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne (WAHT’-nee) says having a large soybean processing facility in North Dakota will give farmers another market and add value to the state’s soybean crop.<\/p>\n

Minnesota Soybean Processors last month announced it was investing $60 million in the plant and will serve as majority investor and managing member. More investments are being sought.<\/p>\n

STIRUM, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A weekend crash in Sargent County involving a dirt bike and a utility vehicle killed the 19-year-old West Fargo man driving the motorcycle.<\/p>\n

The Highway Patrol says bike and the UTV collided head-on about 11:30 p.m. Saturday on a rural road near Stirum. The driver died at an Oakes hospital. He wasn’t immediately identified.<\/p>\n

Authorities say the motorcycle did not have a headlight.<\/p>\n

The 56-year-old Oakes man driving the UTV and a passenger were not injured. Authorities say the driver was arrested and charges are pending, but they did not elaborate. The patrol did say that alcohol was a factor in the crash.<\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Los Angeles has reached an agreement with international Olympic leaders that will open the way for the city to host the 2028 Summer Games.<\/p>\n

City Council President Herb Wesson’s office on Monday confirmed the deal.<\/p>\n

Spokeswoman Caolinn Mejza says the pact is expected to be reviewed by the council later this week.<\/p>\n

The agreement to be formally announced later Monday follows a vote earlier this month by the International Olympic Committee to seek a deal to award the 2024 and 2028 Games.<\/p>\n

Paris is widely seen as the favorite for 2024.<\/p>\n

With the agreement, Los Angeles would get 2028.<\/p>\n

The deal would make LA a three-time Olympic city, after hosting the 1932 and 1984 Games.<\/p>\n

CHICAGO (AP) \u2014 Steve Bartman<\/span> is getting a World Series championship ring from the Chicago Cubs.<\/p>\n

The Cubs announced Monday they were giving a ring to the fan remembered for deflecting a foul ball that appeared destined to land in left fielder Moises Alou’s glove with Chicago five outs from the World Series in 2003.<\/p>\n

Bartman<\/span> was harassed after the incident and has avoided the spotlight since. Chicago beat Cleveland last fall for its first championship since 1908.<\/p>\n

The Cubs say they “hope this provides closure on an unfortunate chapter” and Bartman<\/span> “continues to be fully embraced by this organization.”<\/p>\n

Bartman<\/span> says he is “deeply moved.” He adds he hopes “we all can learn from my experience to view sports as entertainment and prevent harsh scapegoating.”

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The White House says Anthony Scaramucci is leaving his job as communications director to give President Donald Trump’s new chief of staff a “clean slate.”<\/p>\n

That’s according to a statement by the press secretary. Scaramucci “felt it was best” and wants to give John Kelly “the ability to build his own team,” the statement says.<\/p>\n

Kelly, a retired general and previous Homeland Security secretary, was sworn into his new job Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Sean Spicer, who resigned as press secretary the day of Scaramucci’s hiring, used the same “clean slate” language to explain his own departure 11 days ago. Spicer was in the White House Monday and has said he is helping during the communications transitions.<\/p>\n

Scaramucci has been in the spotlight since he was first announced as communications director earlier this month.<\/p>\n

The New Yorker magazine published an interview Thursday in which Scaramucci went on a profanity-laden tirade against Reince Priebus, then chief of staff.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

DETROIT (AP) \u2014 An Associated Press investigation has uncovered an uneven patchwork of justice for “juvenile lifers.” The Supreme Court has banned mandatory life without parole for juvenile homicide offenders, but inmates’ chance at resentencing or parole depends largely on which state, or even county, they find themselves in. The high court mandate has stirred uncertainty and opposition. Some states have resentenced and released dozens. Others have delayed case reviews or fought to keep inmates locked up.<\/p>\n

BERATZHAUSEN, Germany (AP) \u2014 Even though the Pentagon says the policy allowing transgender troops to serve in the military won’t change until there’s official guidance from the White House, the uncertainty is unsettling for U.S. Army Capt. Jennifer Sims. President Donald Trump’s tweet saying transgender people would no longer be welcome in the military came weeks after Sims sent an email to more than 200 fellow troops telling them that she was transgender. Sims has been undergoing hormone therapy from her military doctor.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Sam Shepard, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, Oscar-nominated actor and celebrated author whose plays chronicled the explosive fault lines of family and masculinity in the American West, has died. He was 73. Shepard died Thursday at his home in Kentucky from complications related to Lou Gehrig’s disease, a spokesperson for his family said Monday. His 1979 play “Buried Child” won the Pulitzer for drama.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
