Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The Jamestown Arts Center hosts the Annual Gala on Saturday February 23, 2013.<\/p>\n

On Thursday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Director, Taylor Barnes asks those planning to attend to please call the Arts Center at 251-2496 to make reservations, with the gala to be held at the Quality Inn and Suites, in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

She pointed out that the proceeds go to support the general operations of the Arts Center.<\/p>\n

The cost is $75 per ticket.<\/p>\n

Ms. Barnes also said the Arts Center will host the Jamestown High School production of “The 25th<\/sup> Annual Putman County Spelling Bee,” on February 28, and March 1, 2013, at 7:30 each evening.<\/p>\n

She added that the Arts Center is resuming Saturday hours, beginning March 2, 2013 from 10-a.m., to 2-p.m.<\/p>\n

On March 7, 2013 the Arts Center will host auditions for the next production of the 2nd<\/sup> Act Community Theater, “Almost Maine,” from 7-10-p.m.<\/p>\n

Plans are being made for some redesigning of t he Arts Park on First Avenue South in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The process includes spring planting designs, space for performances, along with pathways, and a seating area.<\/p>\n

Anyone wishing to volunteer this spring may contact the Jamestown Arts Center, at 251-2496.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BINFORD, N.D. (AP) – A 90-year-old red-brick schoolhouse that closed down a decade ago is getting new life in a small North Dakota town.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Officials in the Midkota School District say the old school in Binford is needed to handle an increase in enrollment. The district covers 600 square miles and includes five communities in east-central North Dakota.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The school opened in about 1920 and closed in 2000. It’s attached to the newer Midkota Elementary School through an enclosed lower-level walkway.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 District officials say the remodeling project will include roof and plumbing work and some improvements to classrooms.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The overcrowding forced the district to move this year’s pre-kindergarten class to a church.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Midkota School Board President Keith Johnson\u00a0says \u00a0the enrollment increase is a nice problem to have.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem (STEHN’-juhm) has ruled that North Dakota State University can legally accept a three-year federal grant to conduct comprehensive sex education.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Two NDSU faculty members had been awarded a $1.2 million grant to offer voluntary comprehensive sex education to Fargo-area teens ages 15 to 19 with parental consent. But NDSU officials froze the grant in January when attorneys questioned whether the funding would break a state law that forbids using government funding as family planning by any person or group that encourage abortions.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But Stenehjem ruled Thursday that the state law was invalidated by a 1980 district court decision and a 1981 appellate court ruling.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NDUS Chancellor Hamid A. Shirvani says the ruling is good news for the school.<\/p>\n

\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota attorney general has filed a lawsuit challenging a shared-parenting initiative that was approved in November by voters in Walsh County.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The measure establishes equal parental rights for divorced or separated parents, as long as neither parent is legally determined to be an unfit parent.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The campaign was spearheaded by Mitch Sanderson, a Park River man who was the main promoter of a similar statewide ballot measure that voters rejected in 2006.
\n\u00a0
\nAttorney General Wayne Stenehjem filed a civil suit over the measure as a motion in Sanderson’s divorce case.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stenehjem argues that the county-wide ordinance usurps state law giving state courts and agencies authority in divorce and custody case.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Two Democratic lawmakers are pushing a measure aimed at creating a panel to investigate alleged acts of wrongdoing by politicians.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 House assistant Democratic leader Corey Mock of Grand Forks and Rep. Ed Gruchalla of Fargo want the state to form a nine-member ethics commission.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Legislature has defeated past attempts to create an ethics commission.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) – A city in the heart of the North Dakota oil patch is looking at ways to improve traffic flow.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota Department of Transportation counts show a dramatic increase in the number of vehicles on the streets of Minot, in northwest North Dakota.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Traffic near a popular south side shopping area was up 79 percent from 2008 and 31 percent from the spring of 2011. Vehicle counts near the city’s airport increased 31 percent from spring 2011.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state is providing a $75,000 grant for a $90,000 traffic study, which is expected to take a year to complete.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 city’s engineering department will be reviewing proposals from firms interested in conducting the study and will make a recommendation to the city council.<\/p>\n

DENVER (AP) – Union leaders representing CenturyLink workers in 13 states have moved closer to allowing a strike but plan to continue negotiations with the telecommunications company.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Communication Workers of America announced Thursday that its executive board has authorized the union’s president to set a strike date, which would be the final step in going on strike.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Union spokesman Al Kogler says nothing is imminent and the union still hopes to reach a good contract for 13,000 employees who formerly worked for Qwest Communications.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The employees for the Monroe, La.-based company include customer service agents, network technicians and Internet support workers.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nearly 90 percent of them voted to authorize a strike in October.

FOX Sports North and the Minnesota Twins\u00a0 have announced a 150-game telecast schedule for the 2013 season.<\/p>\n

FOX Sports North will serve as the exclusive television home for the Minnesota Twins, televising nearly every game not scheduled for national network TV.<\/p>\n

This season commemorates a 25 year partnership between the Minnesota Twins and the regional sports network.<\/p>\n

FOX Sports North\u2019s regular season coverage begins Monday, April 1 with the Twins home opener versus Detroit, the first of eighteen televised games against the Tigers.<\/p>\n

Other highlights of the 2013 season schedule include sixteen games versus the Chicago White Sox, seven match-ups against the Yankees and a pair of home-and-home series with the Milwaukee Brewers scheduled for May 27-30.<\/p>\n

In addition to the match-ups with the Brewers, the Twins will take on a number of other National League East teams, including the Braves, Marlins, Mets, Nationals and Phillies.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0 Lawyers for the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe’s pro nickname Committee for Understanding and Respect asked the Eighth U.S. Court of Appeals to reverse a district court order dismissing their lawsuit against the NCAA.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A judge dismissed the lawsuit last May. Nickname supporters at the Spirit Lake and Standing Rock Sioux reservations claimed they were not included in discussions when the NCAA and the state negotiated a settlement to retire the nickname.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Sixty-eight-percent of North Dakota voters last June voted to drop the nickname deemed “hostile and abusive” by the NCAA.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota boxer Virgil Hill says he wants one more fight in the state to thank the fans.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hill made the announcement on Thursday at the state Capitol in Bismarck. Hill says he doesn’t have an opponent yet but he wants the fight to take place in North Dakota where he grew up.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The five-time world champion is to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this summer. The 49-year-old Hill says he’s been training in Los Angeles for the past year and feels fit.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hill won an Olympic silver medal as a middleweight, and won 50 fights as a pro. His last victory came over Valery Brudov in 2006.<\/p>\n

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – A Coast Guard official says a disabled cruise ship is stopped off the coast of Alabama because of a broken towline attached to one of the boats towing the vessel. The petty officer says the ship will be “dead in the water” as the tugboat with the broken line is replaced with another vessel. There’s no word on how long that will take. Before the towline broke, the ship and the 4,000-plus passengers and crew were expected to arrive at the Mobile cruise terminal late tonight.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 DECATUR, Ga. (AP) – President Barack Obama says he wants to make preschool available to all 4-year-olds, a vast expansion of existing early childhood education programs. The president is traveling for a second day following his State of the Union address, pressing initiatives for his second term.

The information was provided in a letter from the White House counsel to three Republican senators. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina is among lawmakers holding up the nomination of Chuck Hagel as defense secretary while they demand answers about what Obama was doing on the night of the attack.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 PARIS (AP) – British police say three men have been arrested by officers investigating the horsemeat scandal in Europe. Police in Wales say the arrests on suspicion of fraud occurred at two plants that were inspected earlier this week. The arrests come after Britain’s food regulator said six horse carcasses that tested positive for an equine painkiller may have entered the human food chain in France and that horsemeat tainted with the medicine may have been sold to consumers “for some time.”
