Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 University of Jamestown Board of Trustees Chairman Jim Unruh announced Friday that Dr. Polly Peterson will succeed President Robert Badal upon his retirement in February, 2018. Unruh stated that the vetting process began in preparation for President Badal\u2019s retirement, and included the Board of Trustees\u2019 Personnel Committee in conversations with a consultant specializing in collegiate executive searches.<\/p>\n
Unruh says on behalf of the Board,\u201cWe have tremendous confidence in Dr. Peterson\u2019s abilities to lead this institution in its continued growth.\u00a0 She has demonstrated her commitment to the institution in her roles as controller, faculty member, and most recently as Executive Vice President.”<\/p>\n
As Executive Vice President, Peterson oversees the University\u2019s offices of Institutional Advancement and Business Affairs.\u00a0 She has led the University\u2019s current $60 million Capital campaign which includes the recent construction of the Harold Newman Arena.<\/p>\n
Peterson holds a Ph.D. in higher education \u2013 institutional analysis from North Dakota State University and an M.B.A. from Regis University. She is a 1989 graduate of the University of Jamestown with degrees in accounting and business administration.<\/p>\n
Dr. Peterson says,\u00a0 \u201cI am deeply honored to be chosen to serve the University of Jamestown as its fourteenth president.\u00a0 My husband, Darin, and I believe deeply in the University\u2019s mission of developing wholeness in our students. The University has been blessed to have faculty, staff and administration who have dedicated their lives to supporting our students, and President Badal and the trustee leadership have guided the University to a place of tremendous strength. I look forward to the journey ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
Peterson will be the first female president in the University\u2019s 134-year history.<\/p>\n

Originally from Northwood, N.D., Peterson and her husband, Darin, a University of Jamestown alumnus, have three children, Andrew (Minneapolis), Paige (Sioux Falls, S.D.), and Courtney (Jamestown).<\/p>\n
Established in 1883 as Jamestown College, the University of Jamestown is a private, liberal arts university granting bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, and bachelor of science in nursing degrees as well as master\u2019s degrees in education, clinical counseling, and leadership and a Fargo, N.D.-based doctor of physical therapy.<\/p>\n

Valley City\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Valley City Police Department informs residents about a phone scam that has cost two Valley City residents, thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n
Lt. Dana Rustebakke says in the most recent report on September 28, 2017, was from a woman who was scammed out of \u00a0$7,000.<\/p>\n
During the calls, scammers said they were police officers and had arrested a family member of the victim, and to send bond money for their release.<\/p>\n
The call victim was then contacted asking for more money saying that a judge ordered a fine and requested more money.<\/p>\n
The sent up a \u201cred flag,\u201d and she called law enforcement<\/p>\n
Rustebakke says it\u2019s the second report to police in the last two weeks from Valley City residents.<\/p>\n
Valley City Police reminds residents that no law enforcement agency calls a family member requesting money to bail someone out of jail and no law enforcement agency calls asks anyone to send cash via UPS, FedEx, or through the U.S. Mail.<\/p>\n
Anyone receiving such a call, should hang up and call Valley City Police \u00a0or the Barnes County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 Dedication of the University of Jamestown’s,\u00a0 Newman Arena was held Friday.<\/p>\n
Construction on the $14 million, 61,000 square-foot\u00a0 was finished this month.<\/p>\n
The arena seats\u00a0 2,000\u00a0\u00a0 featuring a large foyer that will accomodate up to 300\u00a0 for community events and activities.<\/p>\n
Harold Newman Arena,\u00a0 contains a full-sized basketball court, eight locker rooms, large booster room overlooking the court, training facility, two small lounges, large laundry room, two concession areas, ticket box office, and a retail store.<\/p>\n
The Jamestown Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting following the dedication.<\/p>\n
UJ reports, the Jimmie volleyball team will host Bellevue (Neb.) in the first game at Harold Newman Arena Friday evening.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating a two vehicle crash Friday about 11:15-a.m. on I-94 a half mile east of Tappen.<\/p>\n
The report says a car operated by 51 year old Michelle Colly of Massilon, Ohio was westbound in the lane of a car driven by 61 year old Joseph Charles, of Hyde Park, New York, when Colly\u2019s vehicle was driven into the back of Charles car.\u00a0 Her vehicle then proceeded into the north ditch and overturned.\u00a0 Charles car went into the median.<\/p>\n
The report says both drivers, the only occupant in each vehicle were injured, both were wearing seat belts.<\/p>\n
They were transported by ambulance to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Bismarck police have identified a woman who died in a two-vehicle crash at a city intersection.<\/p>\n
Authorities say 65-year-old Agnes Eagle, of Bismarck, was a passenger in one of the vehicles. She died at the scene on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The drivers of both vehicles were taken to hospitals with unspecified injuries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Production of small grains crops in the Dakotas this year has been dramatically impacted by drought.<\/p>\n
Summaries released by the federal Agriculture Department show that spring wheat production is down 23 percent in North Dakota and down 56 percent in South Dakota from a year ago.<\/p>\n
Production of winter wheat and durum wheat is down by 50 percent or more in both states. Oat and barley production also is down significantly.<\/p>\n
The latest U.S. Drought Monitor map shows 59 percent of South Dakota and 63 percent of North Dakota still in some stage of drought.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Supreme Court has reversed a district court ruling in a case involving mineral rights taken by the state for construction of a dam that created Lake Sakakawea.<\/p>\n
Attorneys for the William Wilkinson family argued that state’s actions were unconstitutional. But Northwest District Court Judge Paul Jacobson ruled last year that the state owned the property and mineral interests.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court on Thursday reversed Jacobson’s ruling and returned the case to the lower court.<\/p>\n
The state’s high court says the district court must now take into account a new law passed this year by the Legislature that’s intended to clarify disputed ownership of minerals under the Missouri River reservoir.<\/p>\n
The law limits the state’s mineral claims under Lake Sakakawea to a smaller area than it had claimed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Nearly 30 applicants who have applied to be commissioner of the North Dakota Department of Trust Lands will remain confidential under a new state law.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0 law took effect on Aug. 1, 2017. It shields names of applicants for state government jobs from the open records law, though the names of job finalists will be made public.<\/p>\n
The department oversees the permanent educational trust funds and assets under the Land Board’s control.<\/p>\n
Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is a member of the Land Board and doesn’t like the new law. He says the “public is always interested in who applies.”<\/p>\n
The North Dakota Newspaper Association also dislikes the law. Association attorney Jack McDonald says the law deprives the public of knowing who’s applying and leads to less participation.<\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sano is coming back just in time for the playoffs.<\/p>\n
The Twins activated their All-Star third baseman on Friday, in time for the season’s final series against Detroit. Sano has missed 38 games with a stress reaction after fouling a ball off his left shin, and had been on the 10-day disabled list.<\/p>\n
Sano is hitting .267 this season with 28 home runs and 77 RBI. Despite his absence, the Twins caught fire in August and clinched the American League’s second wild card spot this week. They play the Yankees on Tuesday in New York.<\/p>\n
Activating Sano makes him eligible for the playoff roster, which has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
