(AP) \u2014 Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says he&#8217;ll personally defend Gov. Doug Burgum against a lawsuit filed by the Republican-led Legislature challenging the Republican governor&#8217;s veto powers.<\/p>\n<p>Stenehjem tells The Associated Press that he will base his state Supreme Court argument on a previous opinion he authored in June that actually favors the Legislature on much of the vetoes \u2014 but not all.<\/p>\n<p>Stenehjem says he&#8217;s talked to Burgum and the two agree on their legal position.<\/p>\n<p>Stenehjem lost to Burgum in a hotly contested Republican primary for governor last year. He also is a former state senator, and during the 1995 Legislature, he sponsored a rewrite of the state Constitution that included a new section on a governor&#8217;s veto power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Fargo police say there&#8217;s been a big increase in the number of car accidents in the city this month.<\/p>\n<p>So far there have been more than 600 crashes in Fargo in December. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wday.com\/news\/4380387-fargo-sees-large-increase-car-crashes-december\">WDAY-TV<\/a> reports that&#8217;s three times as many as November when police say there were 200 car accidents.<\/p>\n<p>Police posted the numbers on Facebook to urge people to be careful on the roads. Most of the accidents happen during rush hour at about 5 p.m., according to police.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Several members of an American Indian tribe in North Dakota have filed an amended lawsuit challenging the state&#8217;s voter identification laws.<\/p>\n<p>Republican Gov. Doug Burgum signed a GOP-sponsored bill in April that reworked the ID laws after the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa members sued in federal court. They allege the ID requirements violate the U.S. Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Dickson, a lawyer representing the tribal members, filed an amended complaint Wednesday, saying the new law remains a &#8220;form of voter suppression.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Before 2013, a voter could sign an affidavit attesting to his or her eligibility to vote but the Legislature removed that provision.<\/p>\n<p>The new law would allow those who don&#8217;t have proper ID to cast a ballot that is set aside until the voter&#8217;s eligibility is confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A judge has awarded $1.4 million to contractor that supervised the $52 million upgrade of North Dakota&#8217;s Heritage Center.<\/p>\n<p>Wahpeton-based Comstock Construction Inc. won a lawsuit last month against the state for damages and unpaid bills.<\/p>\n<p>South Central District Judge James Hill entered the monetary judgment on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Historical Society Director Claudia Berg has said the agency withheld payment to the company because it had not finished some work, though a jury disagreed following a three-day trial.<\/p>\n<p>The revamped Heritage Center opened in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>State lawmakers approved about $40 million for the 97,000-square-foot expansion in 2009. The Historical Society raised an additional $12 million from private sources.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Bismarck officials have identified $10,000 in their budget to help shelter the homeless after the only men&#8217;s shelter in the area closed.<\/p>\n<p>The Bismarck City Commission has requested a plan detailing how the money will be spent.<\/p>\n<p>The Bismarck Tribune reports that the commission on Tuesday considered allocating some of its special projects fund to help the homeless population in the Bismarck and Mandan areas. The board has yet to take any formal action.<\/p>\n<p>The Missouri Slope Areawide United Way has been filling the area&#8217;s emergency housing gap since Ruth Meiers Hospitality House closed its men&#8217;s emergency shelter on Oct. 27. Cole Bunce&#8217;s 33-yard field goal with just over three minutes to play won it for the 11-3 Horned Frogs.
