WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Trump administration says it is working with governors to “immediately” deploy the National Guard to combat illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Wednesday that DHS and the Pentagon will be working closely with governors in the affected states.<\/p>\n

She says that deployment will be done as expeditiously as possible and that Guard troops could begin heading to the border as soon as Wednesday night.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Trump announced his plan to send the military to the border during a meeting with Baltic leaders Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Trump has been frustrated by Congress’ refusal to fund building a wall along the length of the U.S. border as well as an increase in illegal border crossings.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP)\u00a0 President Donald Trump says the U.S. has “horrible” and “very unsafe” immigration laws, and he is calling on Congress to “get their act together” to change them.<\/p>\n

Trump says during a joint press conference with the leaders of the Baltic nations that, “we don’t have laws. We have catch and release.”<\/p>\n

Trump also says he spoke with Mexico and warned them to halt a caravan of mostly Honduran migrants traveling through the country. Trump has threatened to pull out of the North American Free Trade Agreement if Mexico doesn’t comply.<\/p>\n

Trump announced earlier Tuesday that he’s preparing to use the military to secure the country’s southern border until the wall he wants built is constructed.<\/p>\n

He says, “We’re going to be doing things militarily until we can have a wall and proper security.”<\/p>\n

He’s calling it a “big step.”<\/p>\n

He said he’ll be discussing the idea with his defense secretary at a meeting later Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Trump begrudgingly signed a spending bill last month that provided far less money for the wall than he wanted.<\/p>\n

He’s been complaining that U.S. borders are too porous and its immigration laws are too weak.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
