News Mar 7, 2013) &#8212; Farm Rescue Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps farm families recovering from injury or illness, has announced that individuals may now apply for assistance in acquiring specialized, non-medical equipment to overcome physical challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Temporary volunteer labor is also available to help with physical challenges during the recovery process to a limited number of cases.<\/p>\n<p>Farm Rescue Foundation President, and founder, Bill Gross says, &#8220;Sustaining life on a farm can be challenge to anyone following an unexpected physical setback. The Farm Rescue Foundation is here to help during the recovery process to ensure that families have an opportunity to continue viable operations. We are pleased to announce this new available assistance to farm families facing unique physical challenges.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gross is also the founder of Farm Rescue, a separate nonprofit organization that provides planting or harvesting assistance to those who have experienced a major illness, or natural disaster.<\/p>\n<p>While Farm Rescue provides assistance during crises in the form of fieldwork, the Farm Rescue Foundation provides assistance during the recovery phase consisting of special equipment or physical labor.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants for this new assistance need not have received assistance from Farm Rescue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A New Rockford man wanted for allegedly stabbing a family member turned himself in to police in West Fargo over the weekend.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n20-year-old Ty Lowseth allegedly fled after the incident at his home Wednesday night, and surrendered on Saturday.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault and could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Court documents do not list an attorney for him.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty for driving drunk and causing a crash that killed his brother.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jamie Belgarde, of St. Michael, is charged in federal court with involuntary manslaughter.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the 38-year-old Belgarde was under the influence of alcohol and speeding last June 23 when he failed to negotiate a curve in the road. The vehicle vaulted, rolled and came to rest upside down in a field.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Donald Belgarde Jr., a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The charge carries a maximum penalty of eight years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled May 29 in Fargo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota prisoner convicted of killing and dismembering a Wisconsin man has lost his appeal over medical treatment at the state penitentiary. Dennis Gaede says he requested a root canal and crown after he cracked a tooth, but the tooth was pulled instead. A lower court previously threw out Gaede&#8217;s original lawsuit, and a federal appeals court last week ruled not to overturn the judge&#8217;s ruling.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The North Dakota Legislature is slated this week to tackle some of the weightiest issues of the session &#8211; including the controversial topic of whether to expand Medicaid. The measure will be a tough sell to Senate Republicans, who have two-thirds control of the chamber. North Dakota&#8217;s Medicaid program now covers about 65,000 people a month.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The North Dakota Legislature this week is expected to take action on a package of measures aim at strengthening the state&#8217;s strict abortion laws. Senators will consider a bill that would ban doctors from performing an abortion if a fetal heartbeat is detected. The Senate also will review a bill that would prevent abortions based on gender selection or a genetic defect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL&#8217;-rimp-ul) has proclaimed March as &#8220;Women Veterans Month.&#8221; Dalrymple says he signed a proclamation to honor the generations of North Dakota women who have served. Dalrymple says North Dakota has more than 6,000 women veterans.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MANNING, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A western North Dakota sheriff says he&#8217;s had enough of sitting behind a desk.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dunn County Sheriff Don Rockvoy says he&#8217;s resigning to work as a truck driver in the oil patch. He has been sheriff since July 2009.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rockvoy\u00a0says \u00a0he would rather be on the road and says he doesn&#8217;t like the way that politics have dominated the job in the last couple of years.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Rockvoy says an increase in crime and traffic accidents in the county since he took over has made it difficult to train and maintain staff.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Dunn County Commissioner Daryl Dukart says Rockvoy did a good job as sheriff and he&#8217;s sorry to see him leave.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota researcher is trying to convince farmers and ranchers to take cover from the sun.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kathryn Stensgard, who grew up on a farm in western North Dakota, recently completed a skin cancer study as a doctor of nursing practice student at North Dakota State University.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stensgard\u00a0says \u00a0she hopes the research will reach rural residents and persuade them to use sunscreen and other forms of sun protection.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stengsard&#8217;s report says there was an average of 162 cases of melanoma &#8211; a serious form of skin cancer &#8211; in North Dakota from 2005 to 2009.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Stensgard says she has also seen the disease first-hand. She says five relatives on her father&#8217;s side of the family have dealt with skin cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Community leaders in Devils Lake think North Dakota&#8217;s 11th-largest city should have a convention center.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 City Commission has authorized a $25,000 study. The cost will be split by the city&#8217;s economic development organization and a local tourism committee.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The study is expected to take about six weeks. Mayor Dick Johnson says city leaders then will develop a proposal to present to the community&#8217;s 7,100 residents.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Johnson says developers have expressed interest in building another motel or hotel in Devils Lake. He says a convention center-hotel complex could serve as a small-scale version of the Alerus Center-Canad Inn complex in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Members of the Greater Grand Forks Community Theatre say they&#8217;ve got new confidence as they celebrate the theater&#8217;s 65th consecutive season and its 30th year in its permanent home at the Fire Hall Theatre.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It also helps that the theater recently won the North Dakota Governor&#8217;s Award for Art Organization.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Theater officials say that hundreds of actors have graced the theater&#8217;s stage, and some of them have gone on to becoming professional actors.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Executive Director Kathy Coudle-King says that people in New York would &#8220;sell their firstborn for a place like&#8221; the stage in the converted fire station. (AP) &#8211; All the teams from the Dakotas that made the NAIA Division II basketball tournaments have been bounced out.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Jamestown College women made it to the Sweet Sixteen but lost to Eastern Oregon 76-62 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Dakota State men made it to the Elite Eight but lost 72-59 to Grace over the weekend in Point Lookout, Mo.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Four other teams from the Dakotas lost in earlier rounds at the national tournaments: the Jamestown men, the Mayville State women and the Valley City State men and women.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The University of North Dakota women&#8217;s hockey team has received at at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 UND will play No. 1 seed Minnesota in a quarterfinal game Saturday in Minneapolis. The Golden Gophers are the defending national champion and haven&#8217;t lost in 38 games this season.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Minnesota beat UND 2-0 this past Saturday in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship game.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The winner of the quarterfinal game this Saturday moves on to the women&#8217;s Frozen Four, which also will be in Minneapolis. Minnesota beat UND last year in the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown ND (KCSi-T.V. Sports)\u00a0&#8212;\u00a0 \u00a0For decades, the North Dakota State bowlers have remained true to the\u00a0 Bowl For Veterans BVL mission.\u00a0 They have steadfastly stood for our nation\u2019s heroes and work earnestly for the cause.\u00a0 At the helm for almost 30 years is Julie Schmidt, of Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>The BVL web site says, Julie has been promoting, coordinating and advocating for the BVL cause for as long as anyone in North Dakota can remember.<\/p>\n<p>It begins at their annual state meeting, when she writes a report for the agenda and gives an oral report.<\/p>\n<p>On the state level, the state tournament is a successful fund-raiser.\u00a0 The host association sets up a BVL booth and dispenses brochures, and also sells bowling towels and pins with the proceeds going to BVL.\u00a0 They also have 50\/50 raffles each shift with half of the money for charities and half for the bowlers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bowlforveterans.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/raffle-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"raffle\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" \/>Their 2012 state tournament was held Julie\u2019s backyard, Jamestown, and she was the local chair.\u00a0 Julie asked Thelma Trecker (their VP and local BVL person) to handle BVL.\u00a0 Thelma and her daughter Susan decorated the booth with patriotic lights, posters, flags, and a big sign to attract attention.\u00a0 Julie says, \u201cIt was the nicest BVL booth I have seen in all my years of attending state tournaments!\u201d In addition to selling bowling towels and pins, the ladies sold chances on bowling pin dolls, decorated by another local bowler.\u00a0 One doll was given away each weekend of the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>On the local level, Julie encourages all bowling associations to have a fund-raiser for BVL\u00a0 and those that do are asked to send in a report to Julie as to how much they sent to BVL\u00a0 and what method they used to raise the money.\u00a0 Julie notes that most hold 50\/50 tournaments or pass the hat on league night during BVL week or at their end-of-the season banquet.<\/p>\n<p>Julie also manages the State Senior Tournament and where they provide coffee and cookies and ask for free will donations to BVL.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on BVL:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bowlforveterans.org\/2012\/03\/04\/volunteer-spotlight\/\">http:\/\/www.bowlforveterans.org\/2012\/03\/04\/volunteer-spotlight\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V.
