He attended school in Valley City until his senior year, when he moved to Enderlin, ND where he graduated from high school. On November 5, 1959, he married Nancy Slegers in Fargo, ND.<\/p>\n<p>He attended Valley City State College, where he graduated in 1955 after earning 13 varsity letters in basketball, football, baseball, and golf.<\/p>\n<p>Upon graduation, King taught and coached in Pelican Rapids, MN (1955-56); Milnor, ND (1956-1960); New Rockford, ND (1960-1965); and Valley City, ND (1965-1979).<\/p>\n<p>He obtained his Master&#8217;s Degree from NDSU in 1970.<\/p>\n<p>In 1979, Bob left his role as athletic director and head football coach at VCHS to become the assistant to the executive secretary at the North Dakota High School Activities Association. In 1988 he became the executive secretary of the NDHSAA, a position he held until his retirement in 1999.<\/p>\n<p>In his twenty years at the NDHSAA, King supervised twenty-five extracurricular activities and managed hundreds of regional and state tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>Bob was an integral part of sports in the state of North Dakota for more than fifty years as an athlete, a coach, a referee, and an administrator. He is a member of the New Rockford HS, Valley City HS, and Valley City State University Athletic Halls of Fame. He is also a member of the North Dakota High School Coaches, Officials, Athletic Directors, and Track and Field Halls of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>He has received numerous national awards for his contributions to high school sports, including recognition for implementing the three-point shot in high school basketball. He was awarded the Valley City State University Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999 and inducted into the prestigious North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Prairie Rose State Games, North Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, Valley City State University Foundation and VCSU Alumni Association.<\/p>\n<p>Bob was a scratch golfer with many tournament wins over the years. In his retirement, he and his dear friend Don Bauer worked tirelessly to ensure the Valley City Country Club was always in great condition. He was also an active member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church for over 50 years.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, Bob loved his family.<\/p>\n<p>He and Nancy traveled many miles to watch their grandkids play football, hockey, volleyball, baseball, softball, basketball, cross country&#8230;you get the picture. His four grandkids and three great grandkids were his pride and joy.<\/p>\n<p>Bob is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy; two children, Darcy (Duane) Schauer of Williston, ND, Darin (Deb) King of Grand Forks, ND; four grandchildren, Katie (Paul) Selid of Madison, WI, Jake (Alyssa) Schauer of Park River, ND, Sam (Chelsea) King of Duluth, MN, and McKenna King of Thief River Falls, MN; three great grandchildren, Harrison Selid, Jordy Schauer, and Landry King.
