Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi) The Jamestown City Fire Department was called to an air conditioner fire, Tuesday about 6:45 a.m., at 1307 12th Avenue, Northeast, near the intersection of Highway 20, the Realtruck.com. building.<\/p>\n

The fire was reported out at 6:55 a.m.<\/p>\n

Lt Sheldon Mohr says minimal damage was reported to the air conditioning unit, and no structure involved.<\/p>\n

The cause was electrical in nature.<\/p>\n

No injuries reported.<\/p>\n

Four city fire units and 25 fire fighters were on the scene about 8 minutes.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi) The week of April 30th<\/sup> has been designated, \u201cSevere Summer Weather Awareness Week,\u201d for the entire state of North Dakota.\u00a0 This annual event is intended to remind the public of the dangers associated with severe summer weather including:\u00a0 lightning, high winds, large hail, flash floods and tornadoes. All of which, can cause severe property damage, personal injury, and even death.<\/p>\n

On Monday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County, Emergency Manager, Jerry Bergquist said, in the past, as part of the awareness week activities, a statewide tornado exercise was initiated by the National Weather Service.\u00a0 However, due to changes in warning technology, the statewide test can no longer be conducted.\u00a0 But, because of the importance of the test, Stutsman County will conduct a modified exercise that will begin at about 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 2nd<\/sup><\/u><\/strong>. The exercise will simulate what occurs locally when a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service.<\/p>\n

The Regular first Wednesday of the month CSi Cable interrupt test from the LEC dispatch will be conducted independently \u00a0on Wednesday morning.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Barnes County Emergency Manager Sue Lloyd says there will be one North Dakota statewide \u201ctest\u201d tornado warning on Wednesday, May 2nd, around 11:00 am Central Daylight Time.<\/p>\n

Bergquist says, in essence, the modified tornado exercise will be testing internal notification procedures county-wide along with siren activation capabilities.\u00a0 Sirens will be activated in many area communities including the City of Jamestown.\u00a0 In most communities, sirens will be activated for approximately 3 minutes.<\/p>\n

Because the National Weather Service will not be involved with the exercise, the simulated warning will not<\/u> be broadcast through the National Weather Service all-hazards weather radio system.\u00a0 Also, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) for local AM\/FM radio stations and cable television providers will not<\/u> be activated. Stutsman County\u2019s CodeRED notification system will also not<\/u> be activated for this test.<\/p>\n

The most common reason a community’s warning sirens are activated is to warn the public of a possible tornado.\u00a0 However, sirens could also be activated to alert the public of other types of events that could be a danger to the community.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi) Jamestown High School\u2019s Teen Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Disaster Drill Exercise and Graduation will be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at the Jamestown High School Gymnasium.<\/p>\n

Stutsman County Assistant Emergency Manager, Kim Franklin says, this spring, 107 JHS freshmen students participated in the Teen CERT program.\u00a0 These students have been learning how to respond and take care of themselves, their family and their neighbors in the event of a disaster.\u00a0 This hands-on course has taught students about emergency preparedness, fire safety, medical triage, disaster medical, search and rescue, disaster psychology, and terrorism by professional emergency responders from Stutsman County.<\/p>\n

As the eighth year of JHS Teen CERT comes to a close, these freshmen will participate in a disaster exercise where they will be acting as the responders during a simulated bleacher collapse scenario.\u00a0 This will give each of them the opportunity to utilize the skills that they have learned throughout this 6 week program.\u00a0 The event will be overseen by personnel from various local emergency response agencies and school staff.\u00a0 The JHS Drama students will be performing as the injured victims in the scenario.\u00a0 Each of the Teen CERT students will also be presented with Certificates of Completion in a graduation ceremony.<\/p>\n

Due to the number of students in the program, the classes have been separated into two groups, each with their own exercise and graduation.<\/p>\n

The museum is hosting several demonstrations from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. including learning about the science of tipi design, prairie grasslands, the bison bone puzzle, buffalo hunters on the plains, modern ranches re-building bison herds, and setting up a teepee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Valley City\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU)\u00a0 Gary Tharaldson, entrepreneur, hotel magnate and a 1967 VCSU graduate, will sign copies of his biography, \u201cOpen Secrets of Success: The Gary Tharaldson Story,\u201d in the W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse at 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 8.<\/p>\n

Described by Forbes magazine as North Dakota\u2019s richest man, Tharaldson majored in business education at VCSU, did high school teaching and sold insurance before getting into the hotel and motel business. OMAHA, Neb. (AP) \u2014 A report says a business conditions index for nine Midwest and Plains states has surged to its highest level in a dozen years.<\/p>\n

The report released Tuesday says the Mid-America Business Conditions Index hit 64.5 in April, compared with 62.1 in March. The February figure was 59.7.<\/p>\n

Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the survey, and he says much of the recent manufacturing sector growth has been driven by exports.<\/p>\n

The survey results are compiled into a collection of indexes ranging from zero to 100. Survey organizers say any score above 50 suggests growth in that factor. A score below that suggests decline.<\/p>\n

The survey covers Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The mother of Democratic U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota has died.<\/p>\n

Heitkamp’s brother, Joel, a popular Fargo talk show host, tells The Associated Press that Doreen Heitkamp died Sunday after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. She was 88.<\/p>\n

Heidi Heitkamp posted on her Facebook page that her mother died on what would have been her 66th wedding anniversary. Doreen’s husband, Ray, died in 1982.<\/p>\n

The senator wrote that her mother was the “rock of our family” who often said her greatest achievement was that her seven children are each other’s best friends. Heidi Heitkamp is the middle child.<\/p>\n

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday in Mantador, North Dakota.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Statistics show nearly 99 percent of all businesses in North Dakota are considered small businesses.<\/p>\n

Those employers make up more than 72,700 businesses in North Dakota, employing nearly 211,000 people \u2014 or about 58 percent of all employees in the state.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Small Business Administration defines a small business as any firm employing fewer than 500 people.<\/p>\n

KXMB-TV reports SBA figures show about 86 percent of all North Dakota companies employ 1 to 20 people. The remaining 14 percent have at least 20 employees, but less than 500 workers.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A Bismarck Public Schools employee who holds a new position as a cultural responsive coordinator is visiting every elementary school to help students learn more about Native American heritage.<\/p>\n

There are nearly 1,100 Native American students in Bismarck schools, or about 8.6 percent of the student population. The students represent about 50 different tribes.<\/p>\n

Travis Albers says he’s found some Native American students aren’t fully aware of their cultural background and want to know more about their heritage.<\/p>\n

The Bismarck Tribune says the district hosts events such as a field trip to the annual powwow at United Tribes Technical College, but that Albers wants to do more to expand the knowledge of Native American culture and traditions within the school system.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The success rate of deer hunters in North Dakota in 2017 failed for the ninth consecutive year to surpass the 70 percent threshold that state wildlife officials consider a good year.<\/p>\n

About 49,400 hunters bagged about 30,100 deer during last fall’s gun season, making the overall success rate 61 percent. It was the second straight year of a decrease, from the recent high of 68 percent in 2015.<\/p>\n

That could impact the number of licenses made available for this fall’s season. Hunter success rate is one of the factors the Game and Fish Department considers when determining the number of deer licenses to issue.<\/p>\n

Officials are still determining how many licenses to issue this year, but Big Game Management Supervisor Bruce Stillings says a big increase is unlikely.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s paddlefish snagging season gets underway Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The season is scheduled to run through May 21, though the Game and Fish Department can close it early if too many fish are being caught. That usually happens. Last year marked the 14th time in 16 years that the season was closed early.<\/p>\n

Snagging is legal in all areas of the Yellowstone River in northwestern North Dakota, and in most of the Missouri River west of the U.S. Highway 85 bridge to the Montana border. A paddlefish tag and a valid fishing license are required.<\/p>\n

Paddlefish snagged on Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays must be released. Paddlefish snagged on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays must be harvested.<\/p>\n

Legal snagging hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.<\/p>\n

Rozier also delivered eight rebounds and six assists, while veteran Al Horford contributed 26 points and seven boards for Boston.Rozier had 10 points and six assists in the first quarter and was 7 for 9 from 3-point range overall.The game was tied at 33 until Horford hit four baskets during a 10-0 run that put the Celtics in control. \u2014 Heat president Pat Riley said in his annual end-of-season assessment that no player on the team’s roster will be considered untouchable this offseason. Riley held exit meetings with players Friday, three days after the Heat’s season ended in a five-game first-round ouster at the hands of the Philadelphia 76ers.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks played extra hockey for the second straight game. This time, it was the Knights coming out on top to take a two-games-to-one lead in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.<\/p>\n

Vegas blew a two-goal lead in the third period before William Karlsson scored 8:17 into OT to lift the Golden Knights past the Sharks, 4-3. Karlsson emerged as the hero after Tomas Hertl tied it for San Jose with 1:57 left in regulation.<\/p>\n

Marc-Andre Fleury made 39 saves, including a brilliant one to rob Logan Couture early in the overtime. Couture had another chance in the sequence before the winning goal.<\/p>\n

Game 4 is Wednesday at San Jose.<\/p>\n

Earlier Monday, the Tampa Bay Lightning were able to even their second-round series at a game apiece by bouncing back from a 6-2 loss to Boston in the opener.<\/p>\n

Brayden Point scored an empty-net goal and had three assists as the Lightning doubled up the Bruins, 4-2. Ondrej Palat provided the eventual game-winning goal with 5:52 remaining, less than two minutes before Torey Krug got the Bruins within 3-2. Palat also set up Tyler Johnson’s tiebreaking goal midway through the second period.<\/p>\n

Yanni Gourde also scored and Andrei Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEHV’-skee) needed to make just 18 saves for Tampa Bay.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Toronto Maple Leafs are in the hunt for a new general manager after Lou Lamoriello quickly rebuilt the franchise into a playoff contender.<\/p>\n

Team President Brendan Shanahan says he’s sticking to a plan that called for the 75-year-old Lamoriello to serve as GM for three years and then transition to senior adviser for four years. Shanahan says he doesn’t have a timeline for filling the GM position.<\/p>\n

The Leafs have made the playoffs the last two postseasons following a three-year absence.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the NHL:<\/p>\n

\u2014 A person with direct knowledge of the decision says there will not be a disciplinary hearing for Capitals winger Tom Wilson for his hit to the head of Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin (DOO’-muh-lihn). Wilson struck Dumoulin in the head with his left shoulder 4:36 into the second period of Game 2 Sunday. It was the latest questionable hit leveled by the physical Wilson, who has logged 806 penalty minutes in 391 regular-season NHL games over the last five seasons.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Hurricanes have terminated the contract of demoted general manager and Hall of Fame player Ron Francis. Carolina announced the move nearly two months after Francis was reassigned to another front-office position while the team began a search for a new GM.<\/p>\n

Justin Smoak slammed a two-run homer and Russell Martin added a solo blast while Yangervis Solarte (yahn-HEHR’-vihs soh-LAHR’-tay) provided three hits in the Blue Jays’ 7-5 verdict over the Twins. Lance Lynn’s ERA is up to 8.37 after he was rocked for six runs in five innings.<\/p>\n

\u2014 This year’s National League leaders continue to have their way with last year’s NL champs.<\/p>\n

A.J. Pollock slammed three home runs and the Diamondbacks opened a four-game series by beating the Dodgers, 8-5. Pollock hit solo shots off three different pitchers and helped Arizona beat Los Angeles for the 12th time in their last 13 meetings, including six of seven this year.<\/p>\n

Nick Ahmed (ah-MEHD’) drove in two runs and fell a triple shy of the cycle to help the Diamondbacks improve to 20-8.<\/p>\n

Zach Greinke (GREHN’-kee) struck out a season-high 10 while holding his former team to two runs and four hits over six innings.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Jon Lester worked into the sixth inning before Luke Farrell and Steve Cishek (SEE’-shehk) finished out the Cubs’ fifth straight win, 3-2 over Colorado. Lester tossed shutout ball until the Rockies scored twice in the fifth, ending a streak of 33 2\/3 innings in which Chicago starters didn’t allow an earned run.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Brewers regained their hitting stroke by getting homers from Manny Pina and Lorenzo Cain in a 6-5 win at Cincinnati. Closer Josh Hader became the first pitcher ever to strike out eight batters in an appearance lasting fewer than three innings.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Tanner Roark (ROH’-ahr) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings as the Nationals beat the Pirates, 3-2. Roark also picked up his first RBI in two years with a single that put Washington ahead, 2-1 in the fourth inning.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Brian Anderson drove in four with a two-run homer and a two-run double as the Marlins trounced the Phillies, 8-4. Miami has a season-high, three-game winning streak after tagging Jake Arrieta (ar-ee-EH’-tuh) for six earned runs over 3 2\/3 innings.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Giants scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 6-5 victory over the Padres. San Francisco was down to its last out when Evan Longoria hit an RBI single and Nick Hundley won it with a two-run single.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Xander Bogaerts (ZAN’-dur BOH’-gahrtz) belted a grand slam and Mitch Moreland went 3-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored as Boston knocked off the Royals, 10-6. The Red Sox fell behind 3-0 before picking up their team-record 19th win of April.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Yankees’ nine-game winning streak is over after Charlie Morton pitched two-hit ball into the eighth inning of Houston’s seventh straight home win, 2-1. Morton fanned 10 and allowed just one hit until Gleyber Torres chased him with a two-out double in the eighth.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Nick Kingham is now a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starting rotation after flirting with a perfect game in his major league debut. The 26-year-old Kingham was in his ninth minor league season when he was recalled to start Sunday’s 5-0 win over the Cardinals. He retired his first 20 batters before Paul DeJong hit a two-out single in the seventh.<\/p>\n

Kingham left after seven innings, allowing one hit on 98 pitches. It was the best debut by a major league starter in more than a half-century.<\/p>\n

Pittsburgh moved left-hander Steven Brault to the bullpen to make room for Kingham.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Rockies have placed second baseman DJ LeMahieu on the 10-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain suffered in Friday’s win at Miami. UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed cornerback Terence Newman, bringing the NFL’s oldest active defensive player back for a 16th season that will begin five days after he turns 40.<\/p>\n

The move was made Monday with Newman, who has played the last three years with the Vikings. His 42 career interceptions are the most among active players in the league.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The 49ers have exercised their fifth-year option on defensive end Arik Armstead, putting him under contract through 2019. \u2014 The Steelers have released veteran safety J.J. Wilcox just days after selecting a pair of safeties in the NFL draft. Wilcox had one interception with Pittsburgh while playing primarily as a reserve.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Texans have re-signed running back Alfred Blue to a one-year deal. Blue has rushed for 1,908 yards and scored six touchdowns in his four-year career.<\/p>\n
