GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team will open the NCAA tournament with a first-round game against Niagara on Friday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 UND is the No. 2 seed in the West Regional at Grand Rapids, Mich. The winner of Friday’s game will face either Yale or Minnesota for a trip to the Frozen Four at Pittsburgh in mid-April.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It is UND’s 11th straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs – the longest active streak in the nation. UND is seeking an eighth national title.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>From the WCHA Final Five, St. Paul, Mn: \u00a0Saturday March 23, 2013 Red Baron Final Five Championship – The University of Wisconsin Badgers skated past the Colorado College Tigers Saturday evening at the Xcel Energy Center, \u00a03-2, to claim the WCHA tournament championship title.<\/p>\n

Next season, \u00a0Wisconsin & Minnesota leave the WCHA to join the Big Ten Hockey Conference. \u00a0 \u00a0This was the last WCHA appearance for Colorado College, St Cloud State, \u00a0and UND.<\/p>\n

Friday Semi-Final: \u00a0 The Wisconsin Badgers defeated St Cloud State 4-1 and Colorado College again defied conventional wisdom and took down the Minnesota Gophers,\u00a0 2-0. \u00a0 The Gopher fans could not believe what they saw.<\/p>\n

Thursday Action: \u00a0Without question, the crowd was mostly a sea of green. \u00a0The band played, the fans cheered. \u00a0Traditional old-school gear was everywhere. \u00a0Through 3 periods of play, they fought to a 3-3 tie.<\/span>tion: \u00a0WCHA hockey fans – 17,038 – \u00a0packed the Xcel Energy Center in downtown St.Paul\u00a0to watch Colorado College battle UND in the Thursday evening contest. \u00a0 The winner would move on the meet the Gophers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Overtime had the fans on their feet.\u00a0 Then the unthinkable, a Tiger slid a puck past UND goaltender.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Silence followed by groans. \u00a0Then the long wait as the play was reviewed. \u00a0 say it ain’t so… \u00a0 The stunned fans quietly left the Xcel Center. \u00a0 A young UND fan was seen sobbing in his dad’s arms. \u00a0 \u00a0 Not the way they wanted to leave the WCHA,.<\/p>\n

In earlier Thursday play, the Wisconsin Badgers throttled the MSU Mavericks \u00a07-2, \u00a0to advance to meet St. Cloud State Friday afternoon.\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Next season will see Minnesota and Wisconsin moving to the new Big 10 Hockey League, while UND and a host of other former WCHA teams move to the new super-conference, including: \u00a0\u00a0Colorado College, the\u00a0University of Denver,\u00a0Miami University, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the\u00a0University of Nebraska Omaha, \u00a0the\u00a0University of North Dakota, St Cloud State, and Western Michigan University, to be called the NCHC.<\/p>\n
