\nValley City State University will host its second annual Earth Day Festival Monday, April 22, 2013 at VCSU’s W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse<\/span> (Note Location Change)<\/strong> Monday, April 22. from 5:00\u20139:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

Because of outside conditions, the event will be held at the VCSU W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse. This event is free to the public and includes a variety of vendors offering environmentally friendly information and products. VCSU Athletics will have concessions open with their regular selections.<\/p>\n

Entertainment at the event will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will include the VCSU Quantum Brass performing their Spring Semester Concert at 7:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

A culminating performance by Buffalo River Singers will bring the festival to a close with performance beginning at 8:00 p.m.<\/p>\n

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Llama Trax Gardens\u2014information about their garden-shares program
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 VCSU Environmental Law and Regulations class\u2014recipes and samples of homemade earth-friendly cleaning supplies
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Betco\u2014supplier of green cleaning and floor-finishing supplies and equipment for businesses
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 WELCA, Saviors Lutheran Church\u2014selling Fair Trade coffee and cocoa
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 \u201cWhat in the World is Going On?\u201d group\u2014information about their \u201cSolar Energy in Valley City?\u201d panel discussion to be held Tuesday, April 23; recycled art activity; and Clay Jenkinson as President Thomas Jefferson
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u2022 Valley Recycling\u2014information about recycling in Valley City<\/p>\n

Kids\u2019 activities began at 5:00 pm. and include earth-awareness coloring projects and bubble-blowing with bubble-blowers made from recycled materials. At 7:00 p.m., children may participate in a variety of old-fashioned games and win earth-friendly prizes.<\/p>\n

Musical entertainment will began at 5:00 p.m. with performers Chuck Bowen, Charlie Kreidelcamp, Michael Whistler and Harley McLain performing half-hour sets. At 7:00 p.m. the VCSU Quantum Brass ensemble will perform, followed by the VCSU Sax Quartet at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

At 8:00 p.m. the festival entertainment will culminate with a performance by the Buffalo River Singers, a Native American group from Fargo-Moorhead, around the Medicine Wheel.<\/p>\n

The festival will conclude with opportunities for star-gazing through telescopes.<\/p>\n

On Monday, April 22, members of the VCSU community will be encouraged to check their ecological footprints online at www.earthday.org\/footprint-calculator. Members of the Valley City community are urged to do the same.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, April 23, at 7:00 p.m., Valley City\u2019s \u201cWhat in the World is Going On?\u201d group will host a panel discussion on the topic of \u201cSolar Energy for Valley City?\u201d at Epworth Methodist Church, 680 8th Ave. SW, Valley City. Don Hoff, VCSU science professor; Jack Hansen, solar consultant at Enterprise Sales; and Dave Schelkoph, Valley City city administrator, will talk about the potential for residential and business solar energy in Valley City and surrounding areas. The discussion will be moderated by Dayne Zachrison, Epworth pastor.<\/p>\n

Wednesday, April 24, is National Walk@Lunch Day. Members of the VCSU community will also be encouraged to walk or ride their bikes to and from work that day. Walkers and bikers may gather at 12:05 p.m. outside the VCSU Student Center for a short celebratory walk\/ride.<\/p>\n

The VCSU Fisheries and Wildlife Club is also organizing a campus clean-up Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, April 25, members of VCSU athletic teams will do clean-up work at two city parks, and members of the VCSU community will be doing their spring highway clean-up as well.
\nOther events throughout the week include cleanup opportunities (weather permitting) and colors assigned to each day to create awareness to specific areas of environmental concern.<\/p>\n

Participants can sign a recycling pledge at the welcome table to register for door prizes, and various groups and businesses will have tables set up emphasizing earth-friendly practices and products. Norway spruce tree seedlings will be given to the first 100 families attending.<\/p>\n

Other Activities<\/p>\n

Valley City grocery stores\u2014Marketplace Foods and Leevers Foods\u2014donated paper grocery bags that the three elementary schools in Valley City are decorating with Earth Day pictures and slogans. The decorated bags will be used in the two grocery stores during Earth Week.<\/p>\n

The VCSU community is invited to wear color-themed apparel Monday through Thursday, April 22\u201324. On Monday individuals are encouraged to wear green in support of keeping the planet green; Tuesday the color is blue in support of clean, healthy water supplies; Wednesday is white in support of a clean planet, and Thursday is yellow in support of a sun-shining, healthy atmosphere for our planet.<\/p>\n

The VCSU Earth Day Festival and Earth Week activities are coordinated by the Earth Week Committee headed by Bob Anderson, associate professor of science, and Rhonda Fairfield, executive assistant to the president. Volunteers include the VCSU Student Senate, members of the VCSU Fish and Wildlife Club, the VCSU Project Management class, select VCSU athletes and coaches, EBC Fraternity, Valley City\u2019s \u201cWhat in the World is Going On?\u201d group, and VCSU staff, faculty, and emeriti faculty.<\/p>\n

Valley City, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — VCSU is making plans for Earth Week activities on campus and the 2nd Annual VCSU Earth Day Festival. The festival will be held Monday, April 22, 2013 at Medicine Wheel Park and will serve as the kick off to campus activities designed to create awareness of our environment and the impact we make now and into the future.<\/p>\n

Beginning at 5:00 pm, the festival will include vendors with information and samples from food and personal consumables to energy. There will also be musical entertainment, games and activities, and samples of earth-friendly home products for you to investigate.<\/p>\n

Several VCSU groups are involved in planning and execution of the events. These include the Environmental Task Force, Student Senate, EBC, Fisheries & Wildlife Club and students from Susan Pfiefer’s Project Management class.<\/p>\n

You too can be part of the festival and the activities on campus. Planning meetings will be held each month from March 25 through April 22 at 12:00 noon in the Student Center Student Senate Room.<\/p>\n
