{"id":156444,"date":"2018-10-26T09:50:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T14:50:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=156444"},"modified":"2018-10-26T14:21:06","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T19:21:06","slug":"oct-29-nov-2-severe-winter-weather-awareness-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=156444","title":{"rendered":"Oct 29-Nov 2, Severe Winter Weather Awareness Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-96157\" src=\"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Blizzard1966-300x202.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Blizzard1966-300x202.png 300w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Blizzard1966-260x175.png 260w, https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Blizzard1966.png 445w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Bismarck\u00a0 (CSi) North Dakota Governor, Doug Burgum has proclaimed October 29- November 2 as Severe Winter Weather Awareness \u00a0Week in North Dakota.<\/p>\n<p>Winter in North Dakota can be very unpredictable and the severity can change quickly.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday\u2019s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Emergency Manager, and 9-1-1 Coordinator, Jerry Bergquist pointed out the terminology used by meteorologists and weather, forecasters, and preparing for winter storms.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>An ADVISORY<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 is issued when winter weather is possible, but not hazardous enough to meet WARNING criteria.\n<ul>\n<li><u>A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY<\/u> \u2013 is issued for accumulations of snow, freezing rain, freezing drizzle and sleet which will cause significant inconveniences and could lead to life-threatening situations. The criteria is\u00a0 three to five inches of new snow in a 12 hour period of time<\/li>\n<li><u>A WIND CHILL ADVISORY<\/u> \u2013 is issued for wind chills of 25-39 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>A WATCH<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; is issued when bad weather is possible in the area.\n<ul>\n<li>A <u>BLIZZARD WATCH<\/u> \u2013 is when the conditions are favorable for a blizzard in the next 24 to 72 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>A WARNING<\/u><\/strong> &#8211; indicates imminent danger to life and property. The snow fall criteria is six to eight inches of new snow within a 24 hour period of time.\n<ul>\n<li><u>An ICE STORM WARNING<\/u> \u2013 is when the ice from freezing rain is \u00bc inch thick or greater and may cause danger to life and property.<\/li>\n<li><u>A WIND CHILL WARNING<\/u> \u2013 is issued for wind chills of 40 degrees below zero, Fahrenheit or colder.<\/li>\n<li><u>A BLIZZARD WARNING<\/u> \u2013 is issued for sustained or gusty winds of 35 mph or more, and falling or blowing snow creating visibilities at or below \u00bc mile; these conditions could persist for at least 3 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>BE PREPARED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The best way to protect you, your family, and your property is to be prepared.<\/p>\n<p><u>\u00a0<\/u><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><u>Make a plan<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 this includes escape routes, meeting places, how you will communicate if not together, special needs that may take extra planning, pets, and any vital records you may need with you such as insurance. *<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Build an emergency supply kit<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 this should include enough supplies to sustain you and your family for at least 3 days. *<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Keep an emergency supply kit in your vehicle<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 make sure to include extra cloths and blankets in your vehicle. *<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Winterize your home<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 this may include insulating water pipes, installing batter operated carbon monoxide detectors, maintain heating units, and keeping fire extinguishers on hand.<\/li>\n<li><strong><u>Be aware of travel alerts and advisories<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 make sure that rad conditions are safe for traveling before you venture out on the roads. (www.dot.nd.gov\/travel)\n<ul>\n<li><u>A Travel Alert<\/u> \u2013 is issued when areas of challenging winter driving conditions may be encountered on roadways. Motorists can still travel, BUT, they should be aware that rapidly changing conditions may result in travel delays due to reduced speeds and visibility.<\/li>\n<li><u>No Travel Advisories<\/u> \u2013 are issued when conditions warrant no travel but not a road closure. These have the potential to change to a Road Closure if conditions deteriorate.<\/li>\n<li><u>Roads Closed or Blocked<\/u> \u2013 are issued when roadways pose life threatening conditions.
