Medina\u00a0 (NDHP) The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a one vehicle crash Thursday injured a child and adult on Stutsman County Road 68, 15 mile north of Medina, at 5:30-p.m.<\/p>\n

The patrol\u00a0says 27 year old\u00a0Addison Hofmann,\u00a0of Medina, was driving a 2008 Honda Civic northbound through a curved portion of the road and failed to negotiate the curve at the crest of a hill.<\/div>\n
\n

The car drifted off the edge of the road, slid sideways, struck an approach and rolled several times before landing on its wheels in the east ditch.<\/p>\n

A motorist who came upon the crash, reported it to law enforcement. Hofmann was seriously injured, and a\u00a0passenger, a 3-year-old child\u00a0in a car seat, Beckton Hofmann, received cuts and bruises.<\/div>\n
They\u00a0were taken to Jamestown Regional Medical Center, and Addison Hofmann wasthen\u00a0 \u00a0airlifted to a Fargo hospital.<\/div>\n

The report says Addison Hofmann was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.<\/p>\n

The car was totaled.<\/p>\n

The crash is under investigation by the patrol.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Also responding were the Stutsman County Sheriff\u2019s Office and Medina Fire and Rescue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Valley City (KVLY<\/a>)\u00a0 A Valley City \u00a0business owner has donated $1000 to pay student lunch debt at Valley City Public Schools.<\/p>\n

Corey Berwick of the Captain\u2019s Pub says, \u201cChristmas is a time of giving\u201d and that he wants to support the community and give back to Valley City families this holiday season.<\/p>\n

While free and reduced lunches are available for those who qualify, there are many families in the area that fall just above income guidelines.<\/p>\n

Mr. Berwick\u2019s donation will be distributed based on need and will help about 20 families.<\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 Cargill plans to sell its malt operations to a European business.<\/p>\n

The Star Tribune reports<\/a> that the Minnetonka-based agribusiness is seeking regulatory approvals to sell the business in the second half of 2019 to Boortmalt, a subsidiary of French-based cereal grains cooperative Axereal.<\/p>\n

Cargill says in a statement it plans to focus on its other food and beverage ingredient groups.<\/p>\n

Cargill’s malt business has 15 plants around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the United States. Boortmalt has numerous plants across Europe, including France, England, Scotland, Ireland, Croatia and Hungary.<\/p>\n

Cargill announced last spring it was closing its malt plant near Jamestown, North Dakota, which is one of the company’s three U.S. plants. Cargill entered the malt business in 1979.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (NDFU)\u00a0 \u2013 North Dakota Farmers Union President Mark Watne issued a statement Thursday after President Trump signed the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, more commonly known as the 2018 Farm Bill:<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A bill named for a Fargo woman who was killed while her baby was cut from her womb looks like it won’t get a vote U.S. House.<\/p>\n

The initiative sponsored by outgoing North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp passed the Senate earlier this month. Heitkamp tells KFGO radio<\/a> that the bill is being blocked by Virginia Rep. Bob Goodlatte (GOOD’-latt), although it’s not clear why he’s standing in the way.<\/p>\n

Goodlatte’s office did not respond to requests for interviews.<\/p>\n

The measure is named for Savanna Greywind, who had ties to both the Spirit Lake and Turtle Mountain reservations in North Dakota. The bill aims to improve tribal access to federal crime information databases and create standardized protocols for responding to cases of missing and slain Native American women.<\/p>\n

ROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) \u2014 The parent company of Caribou Coffee and Bruegger’s Bagels says hackers gained access to customer information at 265 of its stores, mostly in Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The Minnesota-based company says the data breach occurred between Aug. 28 and Dec. 3. Caribou says it’s possible that customer name and credit card information may have been taken.<\/p>\n

The company didn’t say how many people may have been affected. But it says about 200 of the affected stores<\/a> are in Minnesota, while the rest are in Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Iowa, North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, Georgia and Kansas.<\/p>\n

The company says payments made through Caribou Coffee Perks accounts or other loyalty accounts weren’t affected, nor were orders placed online with associated bagel shops.<\/p>\n

Caribou says it believes the breach has been contained but advises customers to monitor their credit card statements and credit reports.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Gov. Doug Burgum won’t stand in the way of an attempt to bring legal sports betting to North Dakota but he won’t advocate for it either, a spokesman said.<\/p>\n

North Dakota is one of many states attempting to capitalize on the U.S. Supreme Court’s lifting of a federal ban on sports gambling. Two Republican lawmakers, Reps. Jason Dockter of Bismarck and Thomas Beadle of Fargo, are crafting separate legislation that would allow sports betting, hoping to generate revenue for the charitable gambling industry and the state.<\/p>\n

Burgum spokesman Mike Nowatzki said the first-term GOP governor has not reviewed the draft legislation but he “is open to looking at ways to potentially capitalize on the national change.”<\/p>\n

North Dakota voters and lawmakers, once hostile to expanding gambling, have done an about-face in recent years, adding more games of chance that have helped grow it to a quarter-billion-dollar annual industry.<\/p>\n

Legislatures in Nevada, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia, Mississippi, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island already have legalized sports betting. And several states already have sports betting bills set for consideration in early 2019, including Kentucky, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee and Virginia.<\/p>\n

Legislation by Dockter and Beadle had not been filed as of Thursday, but they say it will be ready when the Legislature convenes on Jan. 3. Dockter’s bill would permit gambling on college and professional sports, while Beadle’s would allow only the latter.<\/p>\n

(AP) \u2014 A monthly survey of rural bankers in parts of 10 Plains and Western states suggests the regional economy is growing.The overall index of the Creighton University Rural Mainstreet survey for December climbed back above growth neutral to hit 54.2, compared with 49.9 in November<\/a> .Any score above 50 suggests a growing economy in the months ahead, while a score below 50 indicates a shrinking economy.Creighton University economist Ernie Goss says the surveys over the past several months indicate the regional economy is expanding outside of agriculture.The survey’s confidence index slumped to 44.3 from November’s 47.0, and Goss says tariffs, trade tensions and weak agriculture commodity prices harmed the economic outlook of bank CEOs.Bankers from Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming were surveyed.\u00a0<\/article>\n

Eight teams will converge on Valley City State University for the annual tournament in early January. The quarterfinals of the tournament will be played on Tuesday, Jan. 8. The semifinals are on Thursday, Jan. 10, and the tournament concludes with the championship and placing games on Saturday, Jan. 12.<\/p>\n

Rookie Jaylen Samuels ran for a career-high 142 yards and made a critical third-down reception in the fourth quarter of the Steelers’ 17-10 victory over the New England Patriots. Samuels set up Ben Roethlisberger’s (RAHTH’-lihs-bur-gurz) two touchdown passes in the first half to help Pittsburgh end a three-game losing streak. His late reception led to a field goal that capped the scoring late in the game.<\/p>\n

Gordon punished again<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Josh Gordon’s on-again, off-again NFL career is on hold once again.<\/p>\n

The NFL says the New England Patriots receiver has been returned to the reserve\/commissioner suspended list indefinitely for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the league’s substance abuse policy.<\/p>\n

He missed the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He was reinstated by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell in 2017 and at the time revealed in an interview with GQ magazine that he drank or used marijuana before games.<\/p>\n

Gordon said earlier Thursday that he was stepping away from football to focus on his mental health, but vowed to work his way back into the sport.<\/p>\n

He was traded by the Browns in September and played in 10 games for the Pats, catching 40 passes for 720 yards and three touchdowns.<\/p>\n

In other NFL news:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Eric Reid says he is “not surprised” he has been drug tested by the NFL six times in the past 11 weeks. But his Panthers teammates and coaches are growing increasingly annoyed at the frequency of the league’s “random” drug testing policy. Reid says it all stems from his pending collusion case against the NFL that alleges owners conspired to keep him out of the league for kneeling during the national anthem to protest social and racial injustice.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Titans have placed running back David Fluellen on injured reserve and filled his roster spot by promoting linebacker Nigel Harris from the practice squad.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Panthers have placed outside linebacker Shaq Thompson on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. The team signed undrafted rookie quarterback Kyle Allen to the active roster from the practice squad on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Browns offensive line coach Bob Wylie broke an ankle during Thursday’s practice. The team provided no information on how the popular assistant was injured.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Jets players, coaches and ownership have teamed up to commit to donating $800,000 to social justice causes. The team announced that funds will be given to five nonprofit organizations that focus on combating social inequality and reducing barriers to opportunities for people.<\/p>\n

The Philadelphia Flyers had originally planned to give goaltending prospect Carter Hart a full season in the minors to prepare himself for the NHL. Hart’s learning curve appears to be shorter than they thought after winning back-to-back starts since his promotion earlier this week.<\/p>\n

Hart followed Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Detroit by stopping 31 shots in the Flyers’ 2-1 victory against Nashville. The 20-year-old Hart made two big saves to help kill off the Predators’ lengthy 5-on-3 power play late in the second period.<\/p>\n

Bulls lose Portis<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Chicago Bulls continue to lose players as they try to climb from the bottom of the NBA standings.<\/p>\n

The team expects forward Bobby Portis to miss two to four weeks because of a sprained right ankle suffered in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s loss to Brooklyn. The team said an MRI on Thursday showed no structural damage.<\/p>\n

Portis appeared in five games after returning from a sprained knee ligament. He is averaging 11.9 points and eight rebounds in nine games this season.<\/p>\n

Leading scorer Zach LaVine is expected to miss a total of two to four weeks after spraining his left ankle against Orlando in Mexico City on Dec. 13.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 Second baseman Daniel Murphy has found a landing spot.<\/p>\n

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the three-time All-Star has agreed to a two-year, $24 million contract with the Colorado Rockies.<\/p>\n

The 33-year-old Murphy batted .299 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs in 91 games for the Nationals and Cubs last season, missing the start of the year following knee surgery. He’s a lifetime .299 hitter with 122 home runs, 333 doubles, 641 RBIs and a .458 slugging average.<\/p>\n
