A powerful Arctic cold front is forecast to drop south across
\nNorth Dakota Wednesday night. There is a chance of light snow
\nahead of the front Wednesday evening. Behind the front, strong
\nnorth to northwest winds will develop. Given the recent rounds
\nof fresh snow, areas of blowing and drifting snow are expected
\nWednesday night into Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The blowing snow may cause significant visibility reductions, with near whiteout conditions possible. In addition, dangerous wind chills to near
\n40 below zero can be expected Wednesday night through Thursday
\nnight.<\/p>\n

If you have travel plans Wednesday or Thursday, be sure to
\nmonitor the forecast closely. Be prepared for potential hazardous
\ntravel.<\/p>\n

Tuesday a.m….<\/p>\n

The NDDOT along with the NDHP have issued a Travel Alert for northeastern North Dakota due to snow creating slippery road conditions. Cities included in the Travel Alert are Grand Forks, Drayton, Pembina, Cavalier, and surrounding areas. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speeds and drive according to the conditions. Use caution when meeting and passing vehicles and passing snowplows as the recent snow fall may create \u201csnow fog\u201d or whiteout conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 Jamestown city crews have begun the full snow plowing program starting with the Emergency routes beginning approximately at 5:00 a.m., Tuesday January 22, 2019.<\/p>\n

City crews will begin plowing residential areas at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Crews will continue work during the night with the downtown district beginning at 11:00 pm.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown School Public School Board\u00a0 Monday talked about\u00a0 possible increases in the building fund, to\u00a0 meet\u00a0 needs.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Robert Lech talked about\u00a0 increasing\u00a0 the building fund from the\u00a0 10 mills now to 20 mills.<\/p>\n

The action would require a vote of school district residents and carry with a 60 percent majorit,y as the mill levy is likely to increase property taxes.<\/p>\n

Lech said\u00a0 the school district has\u00a0 significant needs, concerning infrastructure, that requires immediate attention.\u00a0 He added that\u00a0 the\u00a0 school board may be voting on the recommendation at an upcoming meeting.<\/p>\n

In other business the school\u00a0 board\u00a0 approved the resignation of\u00a0 high school English teacher Teresa Palmer-Visser, who has been a teacher in the district\u00a0\u00a0 the past ten years.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown Parks and Rec Department has scheduled Feb. 1-10 as Cabin Fever Days in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

There will be\u00a0 co-ed softball games, have warming houses for skating and cross country skiing as well as have public skating at Wilson Arena.<\/p>\n

There are pinochle and basketball tournaments are set.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A North Dakota couple died while vacationing in San Diego when a 75-foot-tall pine tree crashed onto their rental house as they slept, relatives and police said.Troy and Jessica Nelson ran a promotional products and apparel company, Trojan Promotions, in Grand Forks.<\/p>\n

They were spending the weekend at the house after attending a trade show during the week, according to the man’s sister Tammy Reynolds. They were sleeping upstairs when the tree toppled in gusty winds around 6 a.m. Monday.<\/p>\n

Reynolds said her sister-in-law’s brother, Ryan Langerud, was on the first floor of the house and survived.<\/p>\n

“It’s such a freaky accident,” Reynolds told The San Diego Union-Tribune. “I guess we’re all so numb from it, and for both of them to go.”<\/p>\n

Reynolds said Langerud told her he found himself in the basement with items on top of him and initially was confused as to what had happened. She said Langerud told her it sounded like an airplane had crashed into the house.<\/p>\n

Trojan Promotions senior production manager Krisi Lund said Tuesday the future of the company is up in the air as its employees grieve the deaths of the Nelsons.<\/p>\n

“We carry on day by day. The future of the company hasn’t been decided. We’re committed to our clients. We are going to take care of our clients the best we can the way Troy and Jessica would want us to,” Lund told The Associated Press. “They were generous beyond belief in every aspect of their lives.”<\/p>\n

San Diego Police Lt. Christian Sharp said the fallen tree caused a gas leak in the house and clipped some power lines.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s Republican-led Legislature reopened the abortion debate Monday following a six-year pause despite critics saying the state is setting itself up for another round of expensive legal fights over legislation they describe as misleading and unconstitutional.<\/p>\n

In back-to-back, standing-room-only hearings, a House committee took testimony on legislation that would ban a commonly used second-trimester abortion procedure. Another bill would require abortion providers to inform women undergoing drug-induced abortions that if they changed their minds, they could still have a live birth \u2014 a claim critics argue isn’t supported by medical evidence.<\/p>\n

Similar fights are expected in several states over abortion rights<\/a> this year. But in North Dakota, home to only one abortion clinic, the legislation marks a return to the debate for the oil-rich state, which had the money to defend<\/a> some of the nation’s strictest abortion laws in 2013 when other conservative states didn’t. One of those laws sought to ban abortions when a fetal heartbeat could be detected, but it was later ruled unconstitutional.<\/a><\/p>\n

Republican Rep. Daniel Johnston, sponsor of the so-called abortion “reversal” bill, told the committee the measure does not hamper access to abortion services and ensures that abortion providers make “all information available” on the procedure. He said: “Women have a right to know that they can choose to change their mind.”<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s House has killed legislation that would bar drivers from smoking in the car if they have a passenger younger than 9.Fargo Democratic Rep. Pamela Anderson’s measure would have allow police to pull over anyone seen smoking with young children in the car and fine them $25.The House defeated the bill on 57-31 on Monday.The American Lung Association says at least eight states have similar laws.<\/article>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The foundation working to develop a Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in the western North Dakota Badlands is negotiating with Dickinson State University to resolve issues arising from the termination of a campus land lease. Here’s a look at the discord over a parcel less than half a square mile in size and the months-long attempt to resolve the dispute.<\/p>\n

Dickinson State’s Theodore Roosevelt Center since 2011 has been digitizing Roosevelt’s papers by the tens of thousands, and it also has hosted an annual Theodore Roosevelt Symposium for a decade. North Dakota lawmakers in 2013 took those efforts a step further, approving $12 million to help build a library for the nation’s 26th president at the university, which is in western North Dakota where Roosevelt ranched and hunted before moving on to the White House. The nonprofit foundation pursuing the project negotiated a 99-year, dollar-a-year lease in 2016 for a 27-acre site that at the time housed the school’s rodeo grounds. DSU currently uses a county rodeo facility outside town.<\/p>\n

MINNEAPOLIS\u00a0 (MLB.com)\u00a0 \u2014 The Twins have agreed to a one-year contract with left-handed pitcher Martin Perez<\/a>, which includes a club option for a second season, a source confirmed to MLB.com\u2019s Jon Paul Morosi. The club has not confirmed the deal.<\/p>\n

The Twins have been looking to build their pitching depth this offseason, and Perez could bring a more experienced option to the competition for the unclaimed fifth spot in the Twins\u2019 rotation with several young pitchers, including Fernando Romero<\/a>, Adalberto Mejia<\/a>, Kohl Stewart<\/a>, Stephen Gonsalves<\/a> and Chase De Jong<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 27-year-old Perez spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Rangers and had a 2-7 record with a career-worst 6.22 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 85 1\/3 innings in 2018. Though he had been used almost exclusively as a starter prior to last season, he was moved primarily to the bullpen in August after recording a 6.95 ERA through his first 13 starts.<\/p>\n

Perez became a free agent after the Rangers did not exercise a $7.5 million club option for 2019. Though he went 10-6 with a 3.62 ERA in 2013 and finished sixth in American League Rookie of the Year Award voting, he hasn\u2019t recorded an ERA below 4.00 since then and has a career 4.63 ERA while calling the hitter-friendly Globe Life Park his home park for his entire career.<\/p>\n

The southpaw has always pitched to contact, as he\u2019s never posted a strikeout rate higher than 16.9 percent at the Major League level and has eclipsed 100 strikeouts in a season only twice in his career. He became increasingly reliant on his sinker in 2018, which he threw more than 50 percent of the time, per Statcast\u2122<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The deadline is March 1.Up to five hunters can apply together as a party. A lottery will be held if more applications are received than there are licenses available. Any remaining licenses after March 1 will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis.The number of nonresident any-deer bow licenses available is 15 percent of the previous year’s mule deer gun license allocation. The Game and Fish Department issued 4,050 mule deer licenses in North Dakota’s 2018 deer gun license lottery.<\/article>\n
