Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 Betty Jo Krenz of Woodworth was sentenced Monday in Southeast District Court in Jamestown to over four years in prison, after entering an Alford plea, to charges of theft of property a Class C felony, and theft of property, a Class B misdemeanor.\u00a0 A charge of unauthorized use of identifying information was dropped.<\/p>\n

She was sentenced in connection with a so-called adoption scam.<\/a><\/p>\n

Krenz, in her late 40\u2019s \u00a0entered an Alford plea, meaning she acknowledge there was enough evidence to be convicted of the crime, but didn\u2019t admit to the crime.<\/p>\n

Krenz turned herself into authorities in June 2018 following arrest warrants.<\/p>\n

Families involved accused Krenz of taking money from a Medford, Oregon family under the pretense of facilitating an adoption for them.<\/p>\n

Court documents provided by the State\u2019s Attorney, say she used her background, a Spirit Lake social worker, to provide false adoption paper work.<\/p>\n

The investigation showed several times when Krenz promise a baby adoption without following through.\u00a0 Restitution to the victims of the scam is to be determined over the next 60 days and added to the sentence.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (UJ) University of Jamestown students offers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program plus free tax help to individuals with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers in need of preparing their own tax returns.<\/p>\n

The program is available to the public and students at the University on Saturday, February 2nd, 9th, and 16th from 10 AM to 4 PM. It\u2019s also available Tuesday, February 5th from 11 AM to 2 PM and Thursday, February 7th from 11 AM to 2 PM.<\/p>\n

Appointments can be made by calling 701-253-4468 or by emailing vita@uj.edu. leave a message including a phone number. The VITA office can be found in Unruh Sheldon 106.<\/p>\n

Two volunteers have been specially certified to prepare nonresident tax returns for international students.<\/p>\n

Appointments are needed. Bring any tax document you\u2019ve received, photo ID, and social security card for taxpayers and dependents.<\/p>\n

The program cannot do anything with depreciation and inventory for a business.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

(CSi) \u00a0 \u2014 The National Council for Home Safety and Security (NCHSS) has just released a study that reveals the safest cities in the United States. The study was completed primarily to highlight the cities that have had the least amount of violent and non-violent crimes per population, while also bringing awareness to the cities that are more likely to have crime per capita.<\/p>\n

North Dakota, for example, has property crime rates that are nearly 40% lower than the national average, and violent crime rates that fortunately fall below as well. However, as the data shows, there are often vast differences from one city (or state) to the next.<\/p>\n

Bismarck (Gov Burgum\u2019s Office)\u00a0 ) \u2013 With most of North Dakota under a wind chill warning for Tuesday, Gov. Doug Burgum and State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler are supporting the judgment of school administrators about whether to close schools in response.<\/p>\n

Baesler said local school administrators decide whether to delay school openings, dismiss classes early or cancel school days altogether. Some storm days are already required to be \u201cbuilt in\u201d to a school district\u2019s calendar.<\/p>\n

Baesler says, \u201cEach of our North Dakota school districts is different, and our local superintendents are in the best position to judge whether it is appropriate to hold classes on days when the weather is snowy or extremely cold.\u00a0 Our schools across the state are evaluating this new cold snap according to their local weather conditions, and that is how it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

North Dakota Century Code 37-17.1-05<\/a> has been interpreted as giving the governor authority to close schools statewide, but only after first declaring a state of emergency through executive order. This authority has very rarely been exercised, as the decision historically has been left to local superintendents. Of the four winter storm emergencies declared by executive order since 2010, none included an order to close schools.<\/p>\n

(AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s Republican-led House has approved legislation<\/a> that would require abortion providers to tell women undergoing drug-induced abortions that they could still have a live birth if they change their mind.The so-called “abortion reversal” legislation was approved 73-16. It now goes to the Senate.Supporters say doctors can give a woman the hormone progesterone to stop an abortion after she has taken the first of two medications needed to complete the abortion.The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says there is no medically accepted evidence<\/a> that a drug-induced abortion can be interrupted.Abortion-rights groups say the legislation amounts to providing misinformation to woman.North Dakota’s proposal follows similar and successful bills in Idaho, Utah, South Dakota and Arkansas.\u00a0<\/article>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 Supporters and opponents of bringing legal sports betting to North Dakota say money should be set aside to provide counseling for problem gamblers.North Dakota is one of many states attempting to capitalize on the U.S. Supreme Court’s lifting of a federal ban on sports gambling. Lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow sports betting to generate revenue for the charitable gambling industry and the state.Gambling counselor Lisa Vig told lawmakers Monday that most people can gamble without getting hooked but it becomes a “life-altering addiction” for others.Vig says she supports the bill lawmakers but that they should use some of the money to treat compulsive gamblers.Opponents of legalized sports betting say it is not “morally justifiable” to get revenue from someone who is addicted to gambling.<\/article>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Tennessee stays atop the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll for a second straight week. The Volunteers earned 48 of 64 first-place votes to extend the program’s first stint at No. 1 since February 2008. Tennessee (18-1) has won 14 straight games. The top six remained unchanged, with Duke sitting at No. 2, followed by Virginia, Gonzaga, Michigan and Michigan State. WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump says he doubts he’d be willing to accept less than the $5.7 billion he has demanded from Congress to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump tells The Wall Street Journal that he doesn’t think congressional negotiators will strike a deal he’d accept to end the border wall standoff and pledges to build a wall anyway using his executive powers to declare a national emergency if necessary.
