Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The Jamestown Public School Board on Monday discussed \u00a0making up three inclement weather no-school days. School was called off those days due to dangerously cold wind chills, or heavy snowfall amounts.<\/p>\n

Superintendent Rob Lech said the plan includes making up \u00a0the January 29-30 no school days on April 22 and May 24, respectively.<\/p>\n

If the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction does not grant a waiver for a February. 7 no-school day, that \u00a0would be made up on March 14.<\/p>\n

In other business,<\/p>\n

Vice president and marketing chair of the Jamestown Dollars for Scholars Board, \u00a0DeAnn Ament, gave information on the annual shoe drive to support local scholarships and microentrepreneur programs in impoverished nations.<\/p>\n

7,500 pairs of shoes through the end of April this year will form three $1,000 scholarships for graduating Jamestown seniors.<\/p>\n

She added that around 1,000 shoes have been collected since the drive started on February first. 1, and are stored at R.M. Stoudt.<\/p>\n

Superintendent \u00a0Lech said that middle school teacher, Kristi Hanson, has been \u00a0was selected as one of 10 North Dakota social studies and cultural studies teachers to receive a Global Bridges fellowship study tour of Saxony, Germany, from March 29 to April 7.<\/p>\n

It was reported that a notice of intent to negotiate with the Jamestown Education Association has a March 4 deadline.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Payless ShoeSource is shuttering all of its 2,100 remaining stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, joining a list of iconic names like Toys R Us and Bon-Ton that have closed down in the last year.<\/p>\n

The Topeka, Kansas-based chain said Friday it will hold liquidation sales starting Sunday and wind down its e-commerce operations. All of the stores will remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May.<\/p>\n

The debt-burdened chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2017, closing hundreds of stores as part of its reorganization.<\/p>\n

North Dakota store closing include West Acres in Fargo, and\u00a0 Columbia Mall\u00a0 in Grand Forks.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Payless locations in Shopko Hometown stores are also closing, including the Valley City location.<\/strong><\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A Fargo man is accused of stealing a vehicle, damaging a police squad car and leading officers on a pursuit.<\/p>\n

Moorhead, Minnesota police spotted the stolen vehicle about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and pulled behind it in a driveway. Authorities say the driver put it in reverse, rammed into the squad car and took off. Police pursued the suspect into Fargo on Interstate 94 and then terminated the chase.<\/p>\n

KFGO<\/a> reports about an hour later, the stolen vehicle was spotted again and continued to flee from Fargo police until it got stuck in a snowbank.<\/p>\n

The driver and a passenger were taken into custody.<\/p>\n

MINOT, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A Minot woman has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting and killing a man more than a year ago.Thirty-nine-year-old Kommika Gregory last October was convicted of manslaughter in the November 2017 death of 58-year-old Ronald Thompson at a Minot apartment. Authorities said Thompson tried to intervene in a dispute between Gregory and her ex-boyfriend. Gregory argued self-defense.She was sentenced Friday, and given credit for more than a year already spent in prison. She’ll be required to serve at least 85 percent of her sentence before being eligible for parole.BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A North Dakota legislator is back at work just days after he was injured when his minivan crashed into a moose, killing it.Rep. Marvin Nelson, from Rolla, had just picked up his granddaughters in Jamestown and was heading home on Highway 281 Friday night when he spotted a moose in a ditch near Rocklake. Nelson says a moment later a second moose appeared in the middle of the road and he couldn’t avoid hitting it. Part of the moose crashed through the windshield, spraying glass in Nelson’s face. His granddaughters, ages 3 and 5, were safely tucked in their car seats in the back and weren’t hurt.Nelson tells The Bismarck Tribune<\/a> he had glass in his eyes and couldn’t call 911, but soon another motorist came by and called for help. <\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota House on Monday approved legislation that would expand the list of medical conditions for which residents can use medical marijuana, add health care professionals who can certify patients for the drug and increase the forms it can come in.<\/p>\n

House members also endorsed a proposed change in state law that could make it easier for patients to get doctor approval for the drug. All the changes will need Senate approval before they can take effect.<\/p>\n

Getting the necessary approval from doctors and advanced practice registered nurses has been a stumbling block for patients who want to apply for a state medical marijuana card, according to advocates. The medical community has cited several concerns<\/a> , including that marijuana can be addictive, can have adverse side effects and is still technically illegal under federal law.<\/p>\n

The House voted 90-3 in favor of removing a requirement in state law that health professionals who certify a patient attest that medical marijuana will help that person. The North Dakota Medical Association has said that puts many doctors in an uncomfortable legal and ethical position because research on the efficacy of medical marijuana is lacking.<\/p>\n<\/article>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s Senate has approved a resolution that would give the Legislature input on successful citizen-led initiatives that amend the state constitution.Senators voted 31-16 on Monday to allow the Legislature to vote on the measure following voters’ approval. The initiative would go back to voters for final approval if it fails to win lawmakers’ endorsement.Opponents believe the proposed legislation goes against the will of the people.Republican Sen. David Hogue says the legislation was inspired in part by a string of successful ballot measures funded largely by out-of-state interests.The resolution now goes to the House for consideration.\u00a0<\/article>\n
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s House has passed bipartisan legislation intended to collect data on missing and murdered people.Representatives voted 93-0 on Monday to approve the measure sponsored by Fargo Democratic Rep. Ruth Buffalo. She is the first female Native American Democrat elected to the state Legislature.Buffalo’s bill initially included missing and murdered Native Americans in North Dakota but she expanded it to include all people.Buffalo says the state does not collect data on missing people and the issue of missing and murdered indigenous women is a “nationwide crisis.”The state Attorney General’s office supports the legislation.It now heads to the Senate for consideration.\u00a0<\/p>\n
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s House has rejected a measure that would prohibit housing or workforce discrimination based on sexual orientation.The bill was defeated 70-22 on Monday. It’s the latest defeat for an idea that’s gone down several times in recent years.The North Dakota Senate in January rejected a measure that would prohibit housing or workforce discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.The House bill does not include gender identity. The North Dakota Human Rights Coalition, which has supported the anti-discrimination bills in the past, said it now opposes the House bill because it does not also include gender identity.The groups says the omission would “codify into law that it is acceptable to discriminate against transgender people.”<\/article>\n<\/article>\n

(AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s House has passed legislation that would exempt military retirement pay from state income tax.Representatives passed the bill 50-42 on Monday.The deduction is available to individuals or their survivors who receive military retirement pay.State budget writers estimate about $3 million in state income tax is generated from military retirement pay.The measure now heads to the Senate.\u00a0<\/article>\n

Michigan State expects to be without Ward for weeks<\/p>\n

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) \u2014 Michigan State forward Nick Ward is expected to be out at least a few weeks following surgery on his broken left hand.<\/p>\n

Ward was injured in Sunday’s 62-44 win over Ohio State. He’s the Spartans’ second-leading scorer at 15.1 points a game, and third with 6.7 rebounds.<\/p>\n

Duke reclaims No. 1 in AP Top 25<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Tennessee’s loss on Saturday was Duke’s gain as the Blue Devils reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll.<\/p>\n

The Blue Devils received 58 of 64 first-place votes to move to the top of the poll for the third time this season. Tennessee’s four-week reign atop the poll ended with an 86-69 loss at Kentucky.<\/p>\n

Second-ranked Gonzaga is followed by Virginia, Kentucky and the Volunteers. Nevada, Michigan, North Carolina, Houston and Michigan State rounded out the top 10.<\/p>\n

LSU made the week’s biggest jump, climbing six spots to No. 13 after last week’s win at Kentucky.<\/p>\n

COLLEGE BASKETBALL-OLSON<\/p>\n

Olson suffers stroke<\/p>\n

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) \u2014 Former Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson has been hospitalized after suffering a minor stroke over the weekend.<\/p>\n

Banner University Medical Center said in a news release on Monday the 84-year-old Hall of Famer is in good condition but will need some rehabilitation once he is released from the hospital.<\/p>\n

Doctors said five days after Olson’s retirement in 2008 that the coach had suffered a previously undiagnosed stroke earlier that year.<\/p>\n

MLB-GIANTS-BOCHY<\/p>\n

Bochy to retire after this season<\/p>\n

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) \u2014 This will be Bruce Bochy (BOH’-cheez) 25th season as a major league manager, and it will be his last.<\/p>\n

The San Francisco Giants skipper has announced that he will retire after this season, saying he informed the ballclub on Monday. He says it’s time for him to step down, adding that “It’s been an unbelievable ride.”<\/p>\n

Bochy turns 64 on April 16 and is entering his 13th season with the Giants. He led the team to World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014 among his four postseason berths.<\/p>\n

Bochy also led the Padres to the 1998 World Series and is 74 victories away from 2,000 for his career.<\/p>\n

He intends to stay in baseball in another role that has yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

In other MLB news:<\/p>\n

\u2014 Miguel Cabrera hit against a pitcher Monday for the first time since rupturing a tendon in his left biceps on June 12. The 35-year-old hit, fielded, threw and ran the bases during the Tigers’ first full-squad workout of spring training. Cabrera strained a hamstring last year and then had the arm injury that required season-ending surgery, limiting him to 38 games.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Speedy outfielder Ben Revere is in spring training with the Rangers after signing a Triple-A contract. The 30-year-old left-handed hitter last played in the majors with the Angels in 2017, when he hit .275 with 21 stolen bases in 109 games.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Outfielders Cameron Maybin and Gerardo Parra have finalized minor league contracts with the Giants after passing physicals. Maybin joins his ninth team in 13 major league seasons, including from 2011-14 in the NL West for the San Diego Padres.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Players’ union head Tony Clark criticized baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred for blaming players’ demands for the slow free agent market and said an increasing number of teams are making little effort to “justify the price of a ticket.” Top free agents Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Craig Kimbrel and Dallas Keuchel (KY’-kul) remain unsigned with spring training underway.<\/p>\n

Flames top Coyotes<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Calgary Flames lead the NHL’s Western Conference and Pacific Division races by one point over San Jose following a victory over the Coyotes and the Sharks’ loss to Boston.<\/p>\n

Mikael Backlund, Mark Giordano and Michael Frolik (froh-LEEK’) each had a goal and an assist as the Calgary Flames knocked off Arizona, 5-2. The Flames squandered a pair of one-goal leads before Austin Czarnik scored late in the second period to send Calgary to its second straight win since a four-game skid.<\/p>\n

Mike Smith handled 27 shots for the Flames.<\/p>\n

The Sharks had to settle for a point after Charlie McAvoy scored at 3:49 of overtime to give the Bruins a 6-5 win at San Jose. The Sharks stormed back from a 4-1 deficit and took a 5-4 lead before Chris Wagner knotted the score with 1:49 left in regulation.<\/p>\n

Boston earned its sixth straight win despite Joe Thornton, who torched his former team with his fifth career hat trick.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere on NHL ice:<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Lightning took care of the Blue Jackets, 5-1 as Nikita Kucherov (KOO’-cheh-rahv) provided two goals and three assists to run his league-leading point total to 99. Brayden Point scored his team-leading 34th and 35th goals 34 seconds apart in the first minute of the third period to secure the win. Andrei Vasilevskiy (va-sih-LEHV’-skee) turned back 39 shots as Tampa Bay improved to a league-best 45-11-4 while keeping Columbus in a third-place tie with Pittsburgh in the Metropolitan Division.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Alex Ovechkin (oh-VEHCH’-kihn) leads the league with 42 goals after scoring twice on power plays as the Capitals topped the Kings, 3-2 in Los Angeles. Pheonix Copley stopped 26 shots and blanked the Kings until the third period. The Caps climbed within three points of the Metropolitan Division-leading Islanders, although New York now has two games in hand.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Avalanche stopped a six-game home losing streak as Andrew Agozzino scored his first NHL goal and had an assist in a 3-0 victory over the Golden Knights. Semyon Varlamov (SEHM’-yahn vahr-LAH’-mahv) stopped 40 shots for his second shutout of the season. Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert also scored to help Colorado deal Vegas its eighth loss in 11 games.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The wildest NHL game of the night was in Chicago where Alex DeBrincat (deh-BRIHN’-kat) registered a hat trick and had two assists in the Bkackhawks’ 8-7 win over the Senators. Patrick Kane and Dylan Strome (strohm) each had a goal and two assists for the Hawks, and Jonathan Toews (tayvz) scored a power-play goal that put Chicago ahead 8-5 early in the third period. The teams combined to score nine times in the first period before tying a season high for most goals in a game.<\/p>\n

NFL-JAGUARS-CAMPBELL<\/p>\n

Jaguars keep Campbell<\/p>\n

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) \u2014 The Jacksonville Jaguars have exercised a $12 million option on Pro Bowl defensive end Calais (kah-LAY’-his) Campbell for 2019.<\/p>\n

Campbell signed a four-year, $60 million contract with Jacksonville in March 2017. He’s made the last two Pro Bowls, totaling 139 tackles, 25 sacks and four forced fumbles for the Jaguars.<\/p>\n

The team also picked up options on defensive end and special teams captain Lerentee McCray and backup safety Cody Davis on Monday.<\/p>\n

Serena Williams back in top 10<\/p>\n

LONDON (AP) \u2014 Serena Williams has returned to the top 10 in the tennis rankings for the first time since taking a break to have her first child.<\/p>\n

Williams dropped as low as 491st upon her return to competition in March 2018 but is up to No. 10 following Grand Slam final appearances at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, but losses.<\/p>\n
