(AP) – As North Dakota lawmakers passed another anti-abortion bill, Democrats questioned if they’re going overboard.

Rep. Gail Mooney of Cummings says the state has already made its point that it’s anti-abortion, having made North Dakota the most restrictive state in the nation to get the procedure. On Friday, the state House endorsed a bill that would ban abortions after 20 weeks based on the disputed premise that fetuses can feel pain at that point.

The bill now goes to Republican Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who has hinted he will sign it.

Mooney noted that the scientific community is split on the matter. She says it’s unlikely that lawmakers know more than scientists.

Rep. Peter Silbernagel, a Casselton Republican, says the bill was worthwhile because it “recognizes unborn children do feel pain.”

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A Fargo man accused of possessing more than 225,000 pictures and nearly 600 videos of child pornography has been sentenced to 13 years in federal prison.

30-year-old John Ehlen also was ordered to pay $6,000 in restitution to victims. He will be on supervised release for 10 years following his prison term.

Ehlen pleaded guilty late last year to receiving and possessing child pornography. Authorities say some of the images depicted children as young as 1 year old.

HUDSON, Wis. (AP) – Jurors at Aaron Schaffhausen’s insanity trial have viewed graphic photos of the Wisconsin crime scene where Schaffhausen has admitted killing his three daughters.

Forensic image specialist Larry Ventura testified for the prosecution Friday. Ventura showed images of the girls’ bodies, their bedrooms and pools of blood on the carpet.

Schaffhausen didn’t look at any of the photos.

Anna Sorenson with the Wisconsin State Crime Lab testified about the murder scene she saw and the condition of the girls. Police found the girls – 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia – dead in their beds in their River Falls home.

The prosecution contends Schaffhausen killed his daughters to get revenge on his ex-wife. The defense maintains Schaffhausen was legally insane at the time of the July killings.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – Fargo police are investigating the armed robberies of two convenience stores within a span of two hours.

The first robbery was reported about 5 a.m. Friday at a Petro Serve USA. The second was reported about 7 a.m. at the West Acres All-Stop store.

Police say there were two male suspects in the first robbery and one male suspect in the second. In both robberies, suspects indicated they had a weapon, but it’s unclear if a weapon was displayed.

Authorities are still investigating whether the holdups might be related.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Senate has unanimously approved a measure aimed at restructuring oil taxes.

The Senate approved the amended House bill 46-0 on Friday. The bill now goes back to the House for consideration.

The bill would close the so-called stripper well loophole that’s costing the state millions of dollars in lost revenue annually. And unlike past proposals it does not offer overall tax cuts for drillers in exchange for closing the stripper well loophole.

Stripper wells are exempt from the state’s 6.5 percent extraction tax, but not a 5 percent production tax. Attempts to close the loophole have failed in the past three legislative sessions.

The measure also would give the Three Affiliated Tribes a greater share of the taxes collected from oil production on the Fort Berthold Reservation.

WATFORD CITY, N.D. (AP) – The mayor of Watford City is advocating for a lower speed limit on U.S. Highway 85 in the region to try to cut down on traffic crashes.

The highway is a major artery in the booming western North Dakota oil patch, and it has become heavy with truck traffic. That has led to more accidents, including one last month that tore a vehicle in half and killed two teenage boys.

The highway is being widened to four lanes, but in the meantime Mayor Brent Sanford wants the speed limit in the area reduced from 65 mph to 55 mph.

The state Transportation Department says more than one-fourth of all traffic fatalities in the state so far this year have been in McKenzie County.

In world and national news…

SARATOGA, Calif. (AP) – Family members of a 15-year-old California girl who killed herself after photos of a sexual assault surfaced online say they suspect the boys responsible for the assault tried to destroy evidence. Audrie Pott’s family posted the message Friday on the Facebook page of a foundation they set up in the girl’s name. They are asking any students who may have information to come forward. The sheriff’s office arrested three 16-year-old boys yesterday in connection with last year’s attack.

PHOENIX (AP) – Authorities are investigating what was reported to be an explosive device addressed to Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio (ahr-PY’-oh), the self-proclaimed “toughest sheriff in America.” The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says the package intercepted in Flagstaff late Thursday was addressed to Arpaio at his downtown Phoenix office. A spokesman for the U.S. Postal Inspection Service says laboratory testing will determine whether the contents of the package actually would have exploded. Arpaio says this isn’t the first time he’s been threatened.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Treasury Department is announcing the names of 18 Russians who are now subject to financial sanctions and visa bans because of their alleged violations of human rights. The list results from a law enacted by Congress last December to hold Russian officials accountable for human rights abuses. The law put strains on U.S.-Russian relations, and the naming of the 18 Russians is expected to add to those tensions.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) – Michigan has won federal approval to build a second bridge between Detroit and Canada. The permit awarded Friday by the State Department is a key step for the $3.5 billion project aimed at relieving congestion and speeding up trade at the busiest U.S.-Canada border crossing. Construction could start by 2016 and be finished by 2020. But lawsuits challenging the project have been filed by the owners of the Ambassador Bridge, which currently is the lone bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – He first became known to TV audiences in the 1950s, but his gift for improvising and creating memorable characters would be enjoyed by generations of Americans.
