BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Everyone from students to lawmakers are getting the day off after a record-breaking snow storm in North Dakota over the weekend.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 National Weather Service reports show as much as a foot and a half of snow fell in western and central North Dakota and northern South Dakota on Sunday.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 17.3 inches of snow that fell in Bismarck set several records, including the most snow on any day of any year in the city. Fargo set a city record for the date with 6.3 inches. In South Dakota, Aberdeen set a city record for the date with 8 inches.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Many schools in North Dakota and northern South Dakota are closed or starting late, with roads closed or impassable. The North Dakota Legislature has canceled its Monday session.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota officials have closed Interstate 94 from Bismarck to Jamestown as heavy snow and high winds continue across the state. The North Dakota Transportation Department and Highway Patrol earlier had closed I-94 from the Montana border to Mandan on Sunday. Later yesterday afternoon, they closed it farther east from Bismarck to Jamestown.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0No travel is advised for other highways in the Dickinson, Bismarck, Jamestown, Valley City and Fargo areas. Officials say the snow and wind may cause snow drifts in sheltered areas and some roadways may become blocked.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In addition, a travel alert has been issued for northwestern and north-central areas. Officials say travel is still possible in those areas, but drivers may encounter difficult driving conditions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News)\u00a0 \u2013\u00a0 The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a pickup pulling a concession trailer operated by 33 year olf Tericia Mitchell of Seattle, WA was totaled\u00a0 on Sunday (Apr 14, 2013 about 12:45-p.m. on I-94, 5 miles east of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

The vehicle was westbound on the right lane and crested a hill.\u00a0 Light snowfall and blowing snow caused a buildup of ice on the road.\u00a0 A strong northeast wind slid the trailer into the left lane.\u00a0 The driver attempted to correct the vehicle.\u00a0 The truck and trailer slid into the median and rolled.\u00a0 The truck came to rest on its top with its rear bumper elevated into the air as the trailer came to rest on its rear with the hitch upward.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Safety chains kept the units connected.\u00a0 Seat belts protected the occupants.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Neither Mitchell nor a passenger, 56 year old Suzette Dutton were injured.<\/p>\n

Bismarck, ND\u00a0 — The North Dakota Aeronautics Commission released their March, 2013 passenger boarding numbers Friday, showing a statewide increase of over 10% from this time last year. Fargo, Grand Forks and Williston experienced their highest boardings on record, and Bismarck had their best March boardings ever.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe state\u2019s economic growth in our state is tremendous, and aviation reflects that growth state-wide,\u201d said Larry Taborsky, North Dakota Aeronautics Commission Director.\u201d \u201cWith direct flights to new destinations and hubs, North Dakota is more accessible to the world all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u2019s Boardings in March 2013 were 227, compared to\u00a0448 in March of 2012,\u00a0down 49%<\/p>\n

Jamestown Regional airport Manager Matt\u00a0Leitner said in March this year boarding increased to 227, up from 184 in February this year.<\/p>\n

He added that the timeliness factor of Great Lakes Airline flights has improved.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) — The newly elected, President of the James River Humane Society says volunteers are needed at the shelter.<\/p>\n

Matt Opsahl said, volunteers are needed to socialize with the animals, walk the dogs, along with cleaning kennels feeding and watering, the animals, and helping visitors.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the Humane Society is always accepting donations of cleaning supplies like Pine-Sol, bleach, and paper towels.<\/p>\n

Also donations are welcome of rawhide chews and toys for the dogs and cats.<\/p>\n

Opsahl is a full time employee of the shelter, in addition to becoming its president.<\/p>\n

He has been affiliated with the shelter since late last year, including helping to take in the animals and making sure they are immunized and spayed or neutered, along with cleaning, and he welcomes visitors along with other staff.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The North Dakota Legislature has canceled today’s session because of a spring snowstorm that’s made travel difficult across the state. On its website, the Legislature announced that lawmakers plan to resume work tomorrow.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – It’s April 15 – the deadline to file taxes. North Dakota Tax Commissioner Cory Fong says his office at the state Capitol in Bismarck will be open until 9 p.m. to accommodate last-minute filers.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fong says keeping the office open four extra hours will enable more taxpayers to get answers to last-minute questions, and will accommodate people dropping off their state return in person.

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – A man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for distributing methamphetamine in North Dakota.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kyle Lindquist pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy to possess with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He was arrested in July of last year in Moorhead, Minn.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities say the charge involved more than 500 grams of meth.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 14 years in prison. Lindquist’s attorney asked for nine years.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson says Lindquist must serve five years of supervised release after he completes his prison term.<\/p>\n

MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) – Union members who have been locked out of American Crystal Sugar plants in Minnesota, Iowa and North Dakota for 20 months are heading back to work.<\/p>\n

Just enough members changed their vote over the weekend to ratify the same contract they had rejected four times before. The union last voted in December when 55 percent of members voted to reject the company’s offer. This time, 55 percent agreed to the offer.<\/p>\n

CASSELTON, N.D. (AP) – A Casselton teacher is receiving a national award for her work in teaching agriculture in the classroom.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota’s Agriculture Department says Central Cass fourth-grade teacher Mary Kensok is one of five educators from around the country being honored at the National Agriculture in the Classroom Conference in late June in Minneapolis.

A judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of the law.

\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota State University researchers have received a grant to study medical management services provided by pharmacists. Researcher David Scott says the study will seek to improve patients’ compliance with prescriptions. Scott says hospitalizations and emergency room visits should be reduced if people take medications as prescribed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0FORT TOTTEN, N.D. (AP) – Members of the Spirit Lake Nation have voted to oust chairman Roger Yankton over concerns about his leadership, but it’s unclear whether he actually has been removed from office.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The tribe’s constitution says a petition is needed to remove a chairman, and opponents of Yankton say they expect a legal battle.

He did appear at a meeting of elders on Friday and offered assurances that his administration would look into\u00a0 problems tribal members had identified, such as ineffective child protection services on the reservation.
