(AP Apr 26, 2013) – William Guy, one of North Dakota’s longest serving governors, died Friday morning at the age of 93.

The death was confirmed Friday afternoon by former Sen. Kent Conrad, who had spoken with family members.

Conrad said Guy was a “giant,” and all who served in office stood on his shoulders. He told The Associated Press that Guy was a remarkable leader with a vision of developing North Dakota, and he never wavered in pursuit of that.

Online Obiturary from Hanson Runsvold Funeral Home

The public is invited to pay their respects at one of the following two memorial services.

Fargo Memorial Service: Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at 1:30 PM CDT, at First Presbyterian Church, 650 Second Avenue North, Fargo, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Bismarck Memorial Service: Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 10:00 AM CDT, at First Presbyterian Church, 214 East Thayer Avenue, Bismarck, ND. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private burial will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

In lieu of flowers, the Guy family encourages the public to send memorials to Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 5509, Bismarck, ND 58506-5509, The Salvation Army, 304 Roberts Street N, Fargo, ND, 58102, and/or any favorite charity that is making a difference in the lives of our fellow North Dakotans.

More Story…

The Bismarck Tribune reported that Guy helped shape the Democratic-Non Partisan League, which formed in 1956 in a state largely dominated by Republican politics. He said in 2004 that he saw entering politics as an opportunity to change North Dakota’s thinking toward national politics.

Gov. Dalrymple Statement…

BISMARCK, N.D. – Gov. Jack Dalrymple and First Lady Betsy Dalrymple offered the following statement regarding the passing of former Governor William Guy, who served in office for North Dakota from 1961 to 1973, and as chair of the National Governor’s Association in 1966. Guy passed away Friday.

“Betsy and I were very saddened to learn of Bill’s death,” Gov. Dalrymple said. “Bill was a remarkable public servant who led our state while such important projects like the interstate highway system and the Garrison Dam were built. Bill also began the Theodore Roosevelt Rough Rider Award, our state’s highest honor. As a fellow Casselton area farmer, I followed Bill’s 12 years as Governor very closely. He truly left a meaningful legacy in North Dakota and will be greatly missed.”

More information to follow regarding the lowering of state flags in honor of Guy.

Senator Hoeven Statement…

WASHINGTON – Senator John Hoeven today issued the following statement in response to learning of the death of former North Dakota Governor Bill Guy:

“One of my earliest memories of public service was the example of former Governor Bill Guy, who in many ways modernized North Dakota and brought us into the 20th Century. He himself called it a transformative era.

“It was a time of tremendous change in our state, a pivotal time, much like today. He served during the building of the Interstate Highway System, the Garrison Diversion and the advent of North Dakota’s important role in the nuclear defense of our nation during a very dangerous time in history.

“I will always remember him for his recognition that a strong economy can lift our state up. He established a strong economic foundation for North Dakota’s future. He was one of the first to recognize the enormous potential North Dakota has in the field of energy, especially coal and oil. He also knew the tremendous importance of agriculture to our economy and was one of the first to identify the potential of value-added agriculture, like sugar beet refining, to get the most out of our largest industry.

“In later years, I had the pleasure of getting to know Governor Guy personally, and it is with great admiration that Mikey and I mark his passing today. We extend our deepest sympathies to former First Lady Jean and the entire Guy family. All North Dakotans owe Governor Bill Guy a debt of gratitude.”

Sen. Heitkamp Statement…

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp issued this statement following the passing of former North Dakota Governor Bill Guy.

My thoughts and prayers are with Jean and all of Bill’s family and friends. Bill Guy was a giant in North Dakota. As Governor, Bill worked tirelessly to improve the lives of all North Dakotans. Because of his competence and professionalism, he brought dignity to North Dakota politics and was respected by folks on both sides of the aisle.

Even after he left office and into his 90s, Bill was working on solutions to issues facing North Dakotans. When I spent time with Bill recently, he was busy advocating for ways to bring water from the Missouri River to Fargo. I feel so blessed to have had Bill’s friendship over the years and I will greatly miss his counsel.

BISMARCK, N.D.
