The 12th Annual composers competition and concert will be held at VCSU’s Froemke Auditorium on Thursday, May 2,\u00a0 2013 at 7:30 p.m. with a pre-concert talk with J. David Moore, the ASCAP Foundation mentor for this year beginning at 7:15 pm. Moore was sponsored by the ASCAP Irving Caesar Fund, a grant that the music department has won for four years running. He is a professional composer from St. Paul with a background as a jazz singer with the group, Dare to Breathe.<\/p>\n
Over the course of the second semester students in Music Theory II, IV and composition classes have been working with Mr. Moore and their instructors to compose new musical pieces in a variety of styles and genres. The students could choose whether or not to enter the competition for $200 cash prizes in either the classical or pop categories. The concert features nine classical works including tuba and flute solos, piano solos, and two vocal solos accompanied by piano. The pop category has two electronic pieces, a jazz piece with sax and guitar, a vocal solo with piano, and a large ensemble with a Caribbean beat. The VCSU Garage Bands will perform during the judges’ deliberation period.<\/p>\n
