David Demeter<\/a> hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first inning, sparking a four-run rally for the Vikings. VCSU’s pitching and defense carried the team the rest of the way. Starting pitcher Marcus Niemann<\/a> and reliever Tyler Kliniske<\/a> combined on a three-hit shutout and the defense did not commit an error in the 4-0 victory.<\/p>\n Niemann walked the first two batters he faced Saturday night, but settled in and set down the next nine batters in a row. Niemann did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, and finished the night with two straight strikeouts to strand a runner at third base in the top of the fifth inning. Niemann allowed just two hits over five innings on the mound, walking two and striking out seven.<\/p>\n Tyler Kliniske<\/a> came on to close the door for the final two innings and gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out two.<\/p>\n The Vikings managed just four hits in the game, but scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning. After JT Reed<\/a> led off the inning with a single, Demeter followed with a first-pitch home run over the left-field fence, putting the Vikings ahead 2-0. Seth Olguin<\/a> later scored on a wild pitch and then Jayden Shipman<\/a> singled home Kyle Leapaldt<\/a> for the final run of the inning and the game.<\/p>\n Reed, Demeter, Leapaldt and Shipman all tallied one hit each for the Vikings.<\/p>\n Adam Carlson led Morningside with two hits, while Nic Metcalf tallied the Mustangs’ only other hit in the game.<\/p>\n Camden Parks took the loss for Morningside, giving up three hits and four runs over his two innings of work.
