SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) \u2014 Doctors who treated two girls shot in the attack at a high school outside Los Angeles say both were in remarkably good spirits when they arrived at a hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n

Dr. Boris Borazjani of Providence Holy Cross Hospital told reporters Friday that both girls were sitting up and \u201csmiling and talking\u201d while undergoing treatment after Thursday\u2019s shooting at Saugus High School in in the city of Santa Clarita that killed two students.<\/p>\n

Dr. Evan Valle added that \u201cboth girls were very stoic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Borazjani called gun violence like the shooting at the school \u201can unacceptable public health problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 16-year-old boy suspected of opening fire is in critical condition at another hospital.<\/p>\n

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) \u2014 A student gunman opened fire Thursday at a Southern California high school, killing two students and wounding three others before he was captured in grave condition after shooting himself in the head, authorities said.<\/p>\n

The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. at Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Shauna Orandi, 16, said she was in her Spanish class doing homework when she heard four gunshots that she initially mistook as instruments from a band class. She said a student burst into the room saying he\u2019d seen the gunman, and her classmates were stunned into silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy worst nightmare actually came true,\u201d she said later as she left a nearby park with her father. \u201cThis is it. I\u2019m gonna die.\u201d<\/p>\n

Freshman Rosie Rodriguez said she was walking up the library stairs when she heard noises that \u201csounded like balloons\u201d popping. She realized they were gunshots when she saw other students running.<\/p>\n

Still carrying a backpack laden with books, she ran across the street to a home, where a person she didn\u2019t know gave shelter to her and about 10 other students.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just heard a lot of kids crying. We were scared,\u201d Rodriguez said.<\/p>\n

On a normal day, she said, Saugus High School felt very safe.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never really thought this would happen in our school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said six people were shot, including the 16-year-old student suspect. Thursday was his birthday. No details were released on a motive.<\/p>\n

A video of the shooting shows the gunman shooting himself in the head. Authorities say he was carrying a .45 caliber handgun.<\/p>\n

The two students who died were 16 and 14. Their names were not released.<\/p>\n

Saugus High School and other schools in the area were locked down.<\/p>\n

Television images showed deputies swarming the school and several people being moved on gurneys. Lines of students were escorted from the school by armed deputies.<\/p>\n

Anxious parents were awaiting reunification with their children in a park near the high school.<\/p>\n

Los Angeles County Undersheriff Tim Murakami has tweeted an apology to the parents, saying investigators needed to interview the students before they could be released.<\/p>\n

Orandi said she Has heard about so many school shootings that she always assumed she\u2019d panic in such a moment.<\/p>\n

But she said she stayed calm, thanks to the help of her teacher who locked down the classroom.<\/p>\n

The shots rang out \u2014 \u201cbang! pop!\u201d \u2014 and Orandi said she heard people yelling and running. Students in the classroom started crying and hugging one another.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just couldn\u2019t believe it was happening,\u201d Orandi said.<\/p>\n

She was escorted from the classroom to the school gym and later picked up by her father Hamid Orandi.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe burst out crying like crazy, but I felt better because I knew the danger was gone,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those random things you always have to worry about.\u201d<\/p>\n

His daughter said she would probably go home and vomit from the stress.<\/p>\n

Student Sharon Orelana Cordova told KNBC-TV she hid under a table in a nurse\u2019s office until officers came to get her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got out, I saw this person lying on the ground … with blood all over,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles County Sheriff\u2019s Department said deputies responded to Saugus High School in Santa Clarita, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

The department said a male suspect in black clothing was seen at the location.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you live in neighborhoods anywhere near Saugus High, PLEASE LOCK DOORS and stay inside. If you see suspect, male dark clothing, in backyards, etc. CALL 911,\u201d the Santa Clarita sheriff\u2019s station tweeted.<\/p>\n

White House spokesman Judd Deere said President Donald Trump was monitoring the reports and advised those nearby to follow the advice of law enforcement and first responders.<\/p>\n

There were three confirmed patients with injuries, and it was not immediately clear if they were gunshot wounds or other types of injuries, fire spokesman Christopher Thomas said.<\/p>\n

Initial reports of at least six injured were likely due to duplicate reports, he said.<\/p>\n

Saugus High School and other schools in the area were locked down.<\/p>\n
