Cramer’s Office) \u00a0 \u2013 The U.S. Senate through a Unanimous Consent (UC) request by U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) Thursday passed S.2099, the \u201cWhite Horse Hill National Game Preserve Designation Act,\u201d a bill\u00a0Senator Cramer introduced<\/a>\u00a0to rename\u00a0the National Game Preserve within the Spirit Lake Indian Reservation known as \u201cSullys\u00a0Hill\u201d to \u201cWhite Horse\u00a0Hill,\u201d its traditional Dakota name. This is the first piece of legislation written by Senator Cramer to pass the Senate.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith all the issues the federal government faces, this may seem small, but it is no small\u00a0issue\u00a0to the people of Spirit Lake,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Senator Cramer said in remarks on the Senate Floor.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThis mistake has taken over 100 years to correct. I\u00a0am sorry for that, but I am grateful\u00a0my colleagues are joining us now to\u00a0correct it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Senator John Hoeven<\/strong>, the bill\u2019s original cosponsor and chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, also offered his support:<\/p>\n

\u201cNow that the Senate has approved this legislation, we are one step closer to reinstating the traditional Dakota name of White Horse\u00a0Hill, which honors the heritage of the Spirit Lake Tribe and this area.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Sullys\u00a0Hill\u00a0was named in 1904 after General Sully, a\u00a0Civil War and the Indian Wars military officer who gained notoriety for committing several massacres against Native Americans, including one of the greatest massacres in North Dakota\u2019s history. Many descendants of his victims live on the land surrounding the hill.<\/p>\n

The North Dakota congressional delegation \u2013 with the support of\u00a0 Governor\u00a0Doug Burgum\u00a0\u00a0and Tourism Director Sara Otte Coleman \u2013\u00a0introduced this legislation in July<\/a>\u00a0after the tribe requested the hill\u00a0return to its historic Dakota name. The Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, which Senator Cramer sits on, advanced this legislation at the end of September. There, Senator Cramer\u00a0delivered remarks<\/a>\u00a0on the importance of this legislation, as did EPW Ranking Member Tom Carper (D-DE).<\/p>\n

\u201cThis action by our committee will help to ensure that the Spirit Lake Tribe\u2019s story of the white stallion will be ingrained in our Nation\u2019s history for years to come,\u201d\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Ranking Member Carper.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cQuite simply, this is the right thing to do, and I want to thank Senator Cramer for his work.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
