Approved a Special Alcohol Beverage Event Permit for Boomer\u2019s Corner Keg on July 25, 2020 for Debbie Gable Memorial Cancer Ride on the 100 block of 3rd Avenue SE.\u00a0 City Police has approved.<\/p>\n

Approved \u00a0was a Cost-Share Request to ND State Water Commission for Phase IV Permanent Flood Control Protection \u00a0Cost Overrun. KLJ said the request is then presented for a cost share.<\/p>\n

Approved was a Design Engineering Agreement for 2020 Seal Coat Project with KLJ in an amount not to exceed $12,000.\u00a0 KLJ reported the project includes 40 blocks that were previously milled and overlayed, and awaiting a seal coat.<\/p>\n

CITY ADMINISTRATOR\u2019S REPORT:<\/p>\n

David Schelkoph said thanks for eight years of service, and appreciated working with the community and, wished the community the best, as he has recently resigned the position, effective later this month.<\/p>\n

CITY UPDATES &COMMISSION REPORTS<\/p>\n

Commissioners and City Staff and KLJ thanked Schelkoph for his eight years of service to Valley City.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Magnuson added that the city has grown under Schelkoph, and gave thanks and best wishes.<\/p>\n

Mayor Carslrud said the city street crews did \u201cwonderful work,\u201d in removing snow from the recent storm.<\/p>\n

He pointed out instances in the community of racism, bullying, in schools and the university, and within the community, that are \u201cvery disheartening.\u201d\u00a0 He encouraged citizens of all ages to be kind to each other.<\/p>\n

He said his position of Mayor would have been much tougher without Schelkoph\u2019s guidance, Carlsrud said he would not have, \u201cSurvived this deal,\u201d (of being Mayor) without his guidance.<\/p>\n

He wished Schelkoph well in the future.<\/p>\n

\"\"BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The gavel has been passed to the new chief justice of the North Dakota Supreme Court. A ceremony Monday marked the transition from 86-year-old Chief Justice Gerald VandeWalle to Justice Jon Jensen. The 54-year-old Jensen was elected chief justice by the state’s district court judges and the Supreme Court last month. VandeWalle announced in September that he would not seek reappointment when his term expired at the end of the year. VandeWalle was the longest-serving chief justice in state history and the oldest in the nation. Jensen was appointed to the high court by Gov. Doug Burgum in 2017.<\/p>\n

(AP) North Dakota\u2019s new tourism marketing campaign will promote what the sparsely populated state has plenty of: elbow room. The tourism agency for one of the least-visited states in the nation on Tuesday unveiled a $2.9 million campaign with the slogan, \u201cDon\u2019t follow the crowds _ follow your curiosity.\u201d Tourism officials confirmed last week that Hollywood actor Josh Duhamel will continue to promote tourism in his home state. The \u201cTransformers\u201d star’s contract with North Dakota’s Tourism Division has been extended until Dec. 31, 2021.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he has secured enough Republican votes to start President Donald Trump\u2019s impeachment trial and postpone a decision on witnesses and documents Democrats want. The trial could start as soon as this week if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi releases the articles of impeachment. She is set to meet late Tuesday with her leadership team. The Senate Republican leader opened the Senate Tuesday morning outlining his proposal to start the trial first and postpone votes on witnesses until later. McConnell believes he has support for his plan, which is modeled after Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial 20 years ago, according to a congressional aide.<\/p>\n

WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Justice Department says President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser Michael Flynn deserves up to six months in prison. That’s according to a court filing Tuesday. Flynn pleaded guilty in 2017 to lying to the FBI about his conversations with the then-Russian ambassador to the United States, including about his request that Russia not escalate tensions with the U.S. following sanctions imposed by the Obama administration for election interference. At the time, he was the closest Trump associate to agree to cooperate in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.<\/p>\n

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) \u2014 Iranian state TV says a stampede at the funeral for a top general slain in a U.S. airstrike has killed 56 people and injured 213 others. Thousands of mourners had surrounded the coffin of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani in his hometown of Kerman when the crush occurred. The deaths came as more angry calls rose from Iran to avenge Soleimani’s death, The U.S. continued to reinforce its own positions in the region and warned of an unspecified threat to shipping from Iran in the region’s waterways, key routes for global energy supplies. U.S. embassies and consulates from Asia to Africa and Europe issued security alerts for Americans.<\/p>\n

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) \u2014 Chevron says it has moved all its non-Iraqi employees and contractors out of Iraq amid heightened tensions there between the United States and Iran. Chevron said in a statement Tuesday that its workers’ safety is a top priority. Chevron has only been operating in the self-governing Kurdish region of northern Iraq. The statement says Chevron has \u201clocal staff who are overseeing our ongoing operations\u201d in the Kurdish area. Mideast tensions have soared in after a recent U.S. airstrike killed a top Iranian general, shortly after he arrived at Baghdad’s international airport. Iran has vowed to retaliate.<\/p>\n

Stocks steady, gold pauses rally ahead of next US-Iran move<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Stocks were mixed in Tuesday afternoon trading on Wall Street as investors waited for the next step in the increasingly tense U.S.-Iran confrontation. Oil prices gave up some of their recent gains after a U.S. drone strike killed Iran’s top general on Friday. U.S. officials were bracing for Iran’s response. Gold touched its highest price in nearly seven years Monday and was holding steady Tuesday. The S&P 500 fell 5 points, or 0.2%, to 3,240. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 97 points, or 0.3%, to 28,606. Technology stocks bucked the downward trend. The Nasdaq edged up 15 points, or 0.2%, to 9,086.<\/p>\n

NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 Jury selection is going forward in Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault trial New York after a judge denied a defense request for a “cooling off period” the morning after prosecutors in Los Angeles brought new charges against him. The 67-year-old disgraced movie titan shuffled into the courthouse Tuesday with a walker. Jury selection could take weeks. The trial involves charges that Weinstein raped a woman in 2013 and forcibly performed a sex act on another woman in 2006. Weinstein has said any sexual activity was consensual. The start of his New York trial comes after Los Angeles prosecutors charged him Monday with sexually assaulting two women there during Oscar week in 2013. Weinstein has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
