(AP)\u00a0 President Donald Trump says Iran appears to be \u201cstanding down\u201d and said no Americans or Iraqis were harmed in Iran’s Tuesday ballistic missile strike on two Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops. The Iranian strikes had come days after Trump authorized the targeted killing of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force. Trump reiterated his position that \u201cIran will never be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.\u201d He adds Americans should be \u201cextremely grateful and happy\u201d with the outcome.<\/p>\n
Iran, in turn, appeared to have calibrated its attack to avoid stoking further U.S. retaliation, giving some early warning to its Iraqi allies to avoid casualties. It was a signal that both sides were stepping away from an immediate spiral of more direct exchanges that could throw the Middle East into great turmoil.<\/p>\n
Speaking from the White House, Trump announced that the U.S. will immediately place new sanctions on Iran \u201cuntil Iran changes its behavior.\u201d He defended his targeted killing last week of Gen. Qassem Soleimani, the head of Iran’s elite Quds Force.<\/p>\n
