His son, Logan Byrnes, says Byrnes died Wednesday in Santa Monica, California. Born to a poor New York City family, Byrnes came to Los Angeles in 1955 and a few years later hit fame as Kookie, a hip parking attendant who helped LA private detectives solve cases. His teen idol fame also led to a hit record called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=MT9QZBGyXjU\">\u201cKookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb).&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"CEURPMM63BCNFFSMZBLEIWFE2I\" class=\"article__paragraph--left\">He hosted the National Bandstand dance-off in &#8220;Grease,&#8221; but he also had memorable appearances in &#8220;Charlie&#8217;s Angels,&#8221; &#8220;Fantasy Island,&#8221; &#8220;Married With Children,&#8221; &#8220;Murder, She Wrote,&#8221; and &#8220;The Love Boat.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"CM7M3KJNQNDTVJ5LCFTIJEC2DI\" class=\"article__paragraph--left\">Byrnes is survived by his son Logan, an evening news anchor in San Diego, and his longtime partner, Catherine Gross. &#8220;He was an amazing man and one of my best friends,&#8221; Logan said in a statement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(AP)\u00a0 Edd Byrnes, who played Kookie on the hit TV show \u201c77 Sunset Strip,\u201d scored a gold record with a song about his character\u2019s hair-combing obsession and appeared in the 1978 movie \u201cGrease,\u201d has died at 87.
