(AP) &#8211; A national group says North Dakota has<br \/>\nsome of the nation&#8217;s weakest laws against animal cruelty, and a<br \/>\ngroup of activists wants to change that.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They have gathered signatures for a ballot measure that would<br \/>\nmake cruelty against dogs, cats and horses a felony crime.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Supporters of the measure say they&#8217;ll turn in their petitions to<br \/>\nSecretary of State Al Jaeger on Tuesday. They believe they have<br \/>\nenough names to get a spot on the November ballot.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota has laws against mistreating animals, but the<br \/>\nstiffest punishment for breaking them is a misdemeanor. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota voters are likely to have a<br \/>\nchance this fall to decide whether they should allow people to use<br \/>\nmarijuana for pain relief.<\/p>\n<p>Backers of medical marijuana turned in petitions with about 20,000 signatures to Secretary of State Al Jaeger&#8217;s office yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u3000FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The harvest of small grains in North Dakota<br \/>\nremains well ahead of the average pace after another week of<br \/>\nfavorable weather.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Agriculture Department says in its latest crop and weather<br \/>\nreport that the harvest of the state&#8217;s staple spring wheat crop has<br \/>\nreached the halfway point.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, less than 10 percent of the crop would be in the bin at this time of year. And one-fourth of the durum wheat and two-thirds of the barley have been combined.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The report says some areas in eastern North Dakota received<br \/>\nmuch-needed rainfall during the past week.<\/p>\n<p>Most of that region is in drought.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ranchers statewide are haying all possible areas, as<br \/>\nprecipitation is needed for the regrowth of pasture and the<br \/>\nreplenishing of livestock water supplies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In sports\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown College President, Dr. Robert Badal and Director of Athletics, Lawrie Paulson, announce that Justin Wieck has been named the Jimmie\u2019s head men\u2019s basketball coach.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am thrilled for the opportunity to be a part of Jamestown College and the Jamestown community,&#8221; said Wieck. &#8220;We look forward to building on the great basketball tradition that has been established at Jamestown College.\u3000<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0I want to thank President Badal and Athletic Director Lawrie Paulson for their belief in me to lead the Jimmies Basketball program into the future. I feel blessed for the opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wieck joins the Jimmie staff after serving as the assistant coach for the Northern State men\u2019s basketball program under head coach Paul Sather. Previous to Northern State, Wieck spent four years on staff at the University of Iowa as head video coordinator, working under head coaches Steve Alford and Todd Lickliter, both NABC Coaches of the Year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are fortunate to be able to hire a person who comes as highly recommended as Coach Wieck,&#8221; said Paulson.\u3000 &#8220;I think Justin understands who we are as an institution and as a staff, and I believe he will do an outstanding job of keeping the men&#8217;s basketball program moving in a positive direction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wieck joined the Hawkeye basketball program as a walk-on after two successful years at Kirkwood Community College, and earned a scholarship for his senior season. In his two seasons as a Hawkeye player, Wieck was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams that won a combined 46 games. As a senior, Iowa posted a 25-9 overall record in 2006, and won the Big Ten Conference post-season tournament in Indianapolis.<\/p>\n<p>Wieck also earned academic all-Big Ten recognition in his final season.<\/p>\n<p>Wieck earned an Associate of Arts degree from Kirkwood Community College, a Bachelor of Business Administration, and a Master of Arts Degree in Athletic Administration at the University of Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am impressed by Justin&#8217;s strong desire to build a successful basketball program, and by his commitment to the academic success of his players,&#8221; says Badal. \u3000&#8221;He brings exceptional credentials and experience to the table, and it will be a pleasure for all of us to be able to support his efforts at Jamestown College.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Wieck succeeds Matt Murken, who resigned after serving as head coach from 2010 to 2012.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A federal judge says it appears the political<br \/>\nfight over the University of North Dakota&#8217;s Fighting Sioux nickname<br \/>\nis over and has thrown out a lawsuit by six American Indian<br \/>\nstudents at UND.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The suit was filed last year after the state Legislature passed<br \/>\na law requiring the school to keep the nickname.<\/p>\n<p>The law was later repealed, but retirement of the logo was put on hold when a group of nickname supporters put the issue to a statewide vote.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson says the overwhelming vote<br \/>\nagainst the nickname and the state Board of Higher Education&#8217;s<br \/>\nclear intent to retire the moniker renders many points in the<br \/>\nlawsuit meaningless.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Erickson says the lawsuit does not prove direct discrimination<br \/>\nby the state or &#8220;deliberate indifference&#8221; to rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D.
