Powell, elected in a Special Election in May of 2017 to fill out the remaining term of former city commissioner Rick Ross.<\/p>\n
He says, serving on both the City Commission and Valley City Park Board he is unable to\u00a0 make the time commitment\u00a0 needed to serve on both.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation has lost its K-9 agent after just two months on the job. The 2-year-old yellow Labrador named Hex collapsed and died last week in Fargo after helping his handler serve a search warrant. The Bismarck Tribune reports that at a recent checkup a veterinarian found some heart troubles and further tests revealed an inoperable cancerous growth inside his heart wall. Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem says Hex was expected to live several more months, but collapsed and died Jan. 31<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 North Dakota’s state superintendent says she plans to seek reelection. Superintendent of Public Instruction Kirsten Baesler says she will run for a third four-year term. The superintendent is a nonpartisan official, but Baesler sought and received the Republican Party’s support in 2016 when she was elected with about 75% of the general election vote. Baesler tells the Bismarck Tribune that it’s important the office serves all students in North Dakota \u201cregardless of the parties or affiliation of their parents.” Charles Tuttle is also running for superintendent. Tuttle was an unsuccessful independent candidate for North Dakota’s lone U.S. House seat in 2018.<\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Federal investigators say wreckage from the helicopter that crashed last month, killing Kobe Bryant, his daughter and seven others did not show any evidence of outward engine failure. That’s according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board. The helicopter crashed into a hillside outside Los Angeles on Jan. 26. The NTSB is investigating the accident, including any role heavy fog played, and a final report isn\u2019t expected for at least a year. A witness told the NTSB that the helicopter was flying forward and downward through the fog before it crashed into the hill.<\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Kobe Bryant’s widow says there will be a \u201ccelebration of life\u201d memorial on Feb. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles to honor her late husband and 13-year-old daughter Gianna. Vanessa Bryant posted a graphic on Instagram Friday morning to announce the event. Her post only said the event will occur at 10 a.m. and there are \u201cdetails to come.\u201d The arena is where Bryant starred for the Lakers for most of his two-decade career and the date 2\/24 corresponds with the No. 24 jersey he wore and the No. 2 worn by Gianna. They and seven others died in a helicopter crash last month.<\/p>\n

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) \u2014 The Iowa Democratic Party has extended until Monday a deadline for presidential candidates to request a review of the results of this week’s Iowa presidential caucuses. Originally, the candidates had until midday Friday to request a review. The decision follows the caucus night debacle in collecting votes from caucus sites that led to a dayslong delay in reporting the results and inconsistencies in the numbers. It then took until Thursday for the state party to issue what it said are its complete results. Amid the irregularities, The Associated Press has decided it is unable to declare a winner based on the available information.<\/p>\n

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump has announced a new nationwide effort to revitalize underserved cities across America. Trump says the campaign will be called \u201cOpportunity Now.\u201d He made the announcement Friday at an economic summit in Charlotte, North Carolina. But five minutes into the speech, Trump shifted to talking about the impeachment trial and sounding themes from the State of the Union address he delivered earlier this week. Trump said Democrats have a \u201cfailed impeachment hoax\u201d that they can put on their resumes. Before leaving Washington, Trump remarked on the Democratic-led effort to remove him from office, saying: \u201cI think there’s a lot of evil on that side.\u201d<\/p>\n

ALABNY, N.Y. (AP) \u2014 New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says his state will file a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s plan to block New Yorkers from enrolling in \u201ctrusted traveler\u201d programs. The lawsuit announced Friday is the latest salvo in an escalating fight over immigration policy between President Donald Trump and Democratic leaders in his home state. Federal officials say they took the step of blocking New Yorkers because of a new state law barring immigrant agents from getting access to state motor vehicle records. The law allows New York residents to apply for driver’s licenses without having to prove they are in the U.S. legally.<\/p>\n

SAN DIEGO (AP) \u2014 Hundreds more people evacuated from the virus zone in China are arriving at military bases across the U.S. All passengers will be quarantined for 14 days and monitored for any signs of illness. Federal officials on Friday didn’t immediately say how many people were on the flights landing in San Diego, San Antonio and Omaha, Nebraska. The planes arrived from the Wuhan region of China, the center of the outbreak of the new coronavirus.<\/p>\n

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) \u2014 Severe flooding in eastern Oregon has closed Interstate 84 \u2014 a major freeway linking Idaho and Oregon. It has forced evacuations in low-lying areas and stranded at least one family on their roof. Snow melt and heavy rain caused the Umatilla River and other tributaries in northeast Oregon to overflow their banks late Thursday. Other parts of the Pacific Northwest are also dealing with flash flooding and landslides.
