Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 The public is invited to view a prototype ladder \u00a0fire truck that the Jamestown City Fire Department is interested in purchasing.<\/p>\n

The truck will be at the City Fire Hall on Wednesday February 26, from about 9-a.m. to 11:30-a.m., for public viewing.<\/p>\n

Mayor Heinrich said the State of ND has indicated that it will no longer pay the costs for the ladder truck.<\/p>\n

At a recent Jamestown City Council Fire Committee meeting, Mayor Heinrich proposed funding options for the $1-millon ladder truck.<\/p>\n

Jamestown\u00a0 (CSi)\u00a0 \u2014The community is invited to attend a free educational event centered on the Emmy-nominated FRONTLINE documentary \u201cBeing Mortal.\u201d<\/p>\n

The presentation, \u201cBeing Mortal: The Whole Story,\u201d is scheduled for Thursday, March 5 from 3-5 p.m. at Edgewood Senior Living, 1104 25th<\/sup> St. SW., Jamestown.<\/p>\n

Attendees will screen the documentary and then participate in a guided conversation on how to take concrete steps to identify and communicate wishes about end-of-life goals and preferences.<\/p>\n

This event is free and open to the public with continuing education hours available for nurses and social workers.<\/p>\n

The Emmy-nominated documentary, \u201cBeing Mortal,\u201d delves into the hopes of patients and families facing terminal illness. The film investigates the practice of caring for the dying and explores the relationships between patients and their doctors. It follows a surgeon, Dr. Atul Gawande, as he shares stories from the people and families he encounters. When Dr. Gawande\u2019s own father gets cancer, his search for answers about how best to care for the dying becomes a personal quest. The film sheds light on how a medical system focused on a cure often leaves out the sensitive conversations that need to happen so a patient\u2019s true wishes can be known and honored at the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing Mortal\u201d underscores the importance of people planning ahead and talking with family members about end-of-life decisions.<\/p>\n

Seventy percent of Americans say they would prefer to die at home, but nearly 70 percent die in hospitals and institutions. Ninety percent of Americans know they should have conversations about end-of-life care, yet only 30 percent have done so.<\/p>\n

Bismarck\u00a0 (NDDOT)\u00a0 \u2013 Preliminary data for 2019 shows 42% of all vehicle fatalities were alcohol-related.<\/p>\n

In order to save lives and remove impaired drivers from the road, law enforcement across the state will have extra patrols for Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, beginning March 1 through March 31.<\/p>\n

Alcohol and drug-related motor vehicle crashes, fatalities and arrests for DUI are 100% preventable. Many lives would be saved in North Dakota each year if every driver consistently makes the choice to drive sober or designate a sober driver.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarch brings two very popular events to the area: the Jamestown Pub Crawl and the North Dakota Winter Show. If you plan to drink alcohol at these events, plan to have a sober driver or use a local cab service to get home safely,\u201d said Jamestown Police Chief Scott Edinger.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A prosecutor says no charges will be filed against two Bismarck police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man last month. Burleigh County State’s Attorney Julie Lawyer says she finds the shooting of Cody Carnes was justifiable. Authorities say Carnes pointed a gun at officers outside his window after police were called to a noise complaint at his residence on Jan. 9. Two officers were placed on standard administrative leave after the shooting. Sgt. Dustin Miller and Detective Lance Allerdings have since been taken off administrative duties and are back on their regular jobs. The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation investigated.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (KFGO-AM) \u2014 A city building dubbed Sandbag Central will soon be open for business as Fargo leaders prepare for spring flooding along the Red River. City Administrator Bruce Grubb told city commissioners Monday of plans to fill 250,000 sandbags in order to protect the city to 41 feet, which would be 23 feet over flood stage. The latest outlook from the National Weather Service shows a 10% probability that the river will reach 39 feet in the Fargo and Moorhead, Minnesota area. KFGO reports that Grubb called the chance of a severe flood \u201ca flip of the coin” and added that the city would rather \u201cerr on the side of caution.\u201d<\/p>\n

WALHALLA, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A northeastern North Dakota weekly newspaper that began publishing in 1896 is going out of business. Walhalla Mountaineer editor and publisher Rodney Huffman, who has been with the paper for 56 years, tells the Bismarck Tribune that he was unable to find a buyer after a more than two-month search. The 75-year-old Huffman says declining subscriptions and sales and a small pool of local advertisers led to his decision to close. The paper had one other employee, who has been with the paper since 1972. Walhalla is a city of about 950 people along the scenic Pembina Gorge, just south of the Canadian border.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 The North Dakota Oil and Gas Division reports a tank leak has spilled brine and oil at a saltwater disposal well near New Town. The spill happened Thursday at the Fladeland SWD 1 saltwater disposal well, operated by Fladeland 1 SWD LLC, about 8 miles northeast of New Town. Goodnight Midstream reported Friday that 34,860 gallons of brine and 2,520 gallons of oil were released. The product was contained on site and cleanup is underway. At the time of reporting most of the brine and oil had been recovered. A state inspector has been to the scene and will monitor additional cleanup.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A nonprofit group that arranges trips for veterans to visit memorials dedicated to them in Washington will now have its first honor flight chapter dedicated to area veterans in western North Dakota. The Bismarck Tribune reports that Western North Dakota Honor Flight hopes to raise $160,000 through sponsorships, fundraisers, and donations to send about 100 area veterans to the nation’s capital on a private plane. The projected itinerary includes visits to the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Marine Corps Memorial. The group says it’s prioritizing World War II veterans because of their age.<\/p>\n

BROOKINGS, S.D. \u2013 The Valley City State women\u2019s track and field team won two individual titles and had five All-Conference performances Saturday at the North Star Athletic Association Indoor Conference Championships.<\/p>\n

Bryeann Robertson<\/a> and Brooke Malsom<\/a> both won conference titles to highlight Saturday\u2019s meet for the Viking women. As a team, VCSU\u2019s women scored 76 points and finished fifth overall.<\/p>\n

Valley City State\u2019s men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams combined for five conference titles, four meet records, numerous personal records and 10 All-Conference performances. VCSU head coach Laquone Robinson<\/a> said he was impressed with the effort his team gave at Saturday\u2019s meet.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a true honor as their coach to watch these athletes give their absolute all today,\u201d he said. \u201cThey gave their best efforts and pushed their bodies to new limits. They should be very proud of the hard work that prepared them for today\u2019s performances. It\u2019s exciting to see their hard work come to fruition and be rewarded. What a way to wrap up our indoor regular season and propel the team into preparing for outdoor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Viking women had 18 different athletes accumulate\u00a0team points with a Top 6 finish at the meet.\u00a0Macy Dimler<\/a> was named VCSU\u2019s NSAA Champions of Character representative for the women\u2019s team on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Robertson won the women\u2019s shot put and set a new meet record on Saturday. Her top throw of 13.82 meters was more than three feet better than second place and bested the North Star meet record by 15 inches. The old meet record of 13.39 meters was set by former VCSU athlete Seri Geisler. Robertson, VCSU\u2019s school-record holder in the shot put, will continue her season at the NAIA National Championships in two weeks. Entering this weekend, she had the third best throw in the nation.<\/p>\n

Malsom entered the meet ranked first in the North Star women\u2019s long jump and earned a conference title with a personal record Saturday. Her top long jump of 5.30 meters (17-4.75) was 4.25 inches better than her previous best and beat the second-place competitor by more than a foot. It is also the third-farthest mark in school history. Malsom also set a school record in the women\u2019s 60-meter dash, recording a time of 8.08 seconds in the prelim race. That broke the old record of 8.12 set by Alexis Heidler last season.<\/p>\n

The Top 6 finishers in each event earned team points. The Top 3 individuals and Top 2 relay teams in each event were named All-Conference.<\/p>\n

Besides Robertson and Malsom\u2019s titles, the Vikings had three other All-Conference performances. Kyley Lauf<\/a> placed third in the 800 meters \u2013 running a personal record by more than six seconds. Hannah Gordon<\/a> finished third in the weight throw with a big personal record of about 17 inches. Tyler Smith<\/a> was third \u2013 and set a school record \u2013 in the NSAA women\u2019s pentathlon which was held on Feb. 7-8.<\/p>\n

Dickinson State won the women\u2019s team title with 185 points. The Blue Hawks were followed by Viterbo (102), Waldorf (95), Dakota State (92), VCSU (76) and Bellevue (6).<\/p>\n

The conference championships were held Saturday at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. The NAIA National Championships will also be held at SDSU from March 5-7. Valley City State will send six athletes to compete in seven events at the NAIA Indoor National Championships.<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014\u00a0 Tim Hardaway Jr. contributed 23 points and Luka Doncic (DAHN\u2019-chich) had 20 in the Mavericks\u2019 139-123 thumping of the Timberwolves. The Mavericks never trailed and were able to rest most of their starters in the fourth quarter after scoring a season-high 81 points in the first half. Dallas shot 56% in the first half and went 12 of 23 from 3-point range en route to an 81-65 halftime lead.<\/p>\n

The Washington Wizards pushed the NBA\u2019s best team to overtime before the Milwaukee Bucks avoided a surprising road loss.<\/p>\n

Khris Middleton scored the Bucks\u2019 final nine points in a 137-134 triumph over the Wizards. Middleton dropped in 40 points, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 30.2 seconds left to give Milwaukee a 135-132 lead.<\/p>\n

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH\u2019-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON\u2019-poh) had 22 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out with 1:33 remaining in regulation.<\/p>\n

Bradley Beal poured in a career-high 55 points, one night after scoring 53 in a loss at Chicago. Beal delivered 22 points in the fourth quarter to help Washington erase a 17-point deficit.<\/p>\n

The Bucks\u2019 third straight win leaves them 49-8, seven games ahead of Toronto in the Eastern Conference.<\/p>\n

Checking out Monday\u2019s other NBA action:<\/p>\n

\u2014 James Harden\u2019s 37 points, nine assists and six rebounds carried the Rockets to a 123-112 decision over the Knicks. Harden got to the arena just over an hour before the game after attending the memorial service for Kobe and Gianna Bryant in Los Angeles hours earlier. Ben McLemore finished with 17 points and Eric Gordon had 16 in Houston\u2019s fourth straight win, which keeps them a game behind the third-place Clippers in the West.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Joel Embiid (joh-EHL\u2019 ehm-BEED\u2019) poured in a career-high 49 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the 76ers dumped the Hawks, 129-112. Furkan Kormaz (FUR\u2019-kahn KOHRK\u2019-mahs) chipped in 15 points for Philadelphia, which wasted a 21-point lead before improving to a league-best 27-2 at home. Trae Young led Atlanta with 28 points despite missing nine of 11 from 3-point range.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Clippers had dropped three straight before outscoring the Grizzlies, 40-14 in the first quarter of a 124-97 dismantling of Memphis. Kawhi (kah-WY\u2019) Leonard was high man for Los Angeles with 25 points and Montrezl (MAHN\u2019-trehz) Harrell added 22 off the bench. Ja (jah) Morant had a team-high 16 points for the Grizzlies, who are 2 \u00bd games ahead of Portland for the final Western Conference playoff berth.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Kevin Porter Jr. came off the bench to deliver 30 points and eight rebounds as the Cavaliers stunned the Heat, 125-119 in overtime. Kevin Love had 17 points and 14 boards for the Cavaliers, who trailed by 19 entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Southeast Division leaders, 45-20 the rest of the way. Cleveland had seven players score in double figures and sent Miami to its sixth loss in eight games.<\/p>\n

\u2014 The Suns crushed the Jazz, 131-11 as Ricky Rubio finished with 22 points, 11 assists and seven steals. Devin Booker had 24 points and 10 assists while Deandre Ayton added 16 for Phoenix. Donovan Mitchell scored 38 points and Bojan Bogdanovic (BOY’-ahn bahg-DAH’-noh-vich) added 16 as the Jazz lost their third in a row and eighth in 12 games.<\/p>\n

\u2014 Aaron Gordon provided 27 points, 10 rebounds and a big blocked shot in the final seconds of the Magic\u2019s 115-113 comeback over the Nets. Terrence Ross added 21 points and eight rebounds for Orlando, which trailed by 19 in the first half before moving without 1 \u00bd games of the seventh-place Nets in the Eastern Conference. Spencer Dinwiddie had 24 points and eight assists as Brooklyn lost for the first time in six home games.<\/p>\n

Bryant\u2019s widow speaks at memorial<\/p>\n

LOS ANGELES (AP) \u2014 Kobe Bryant’s wife offered a poignant portrait of her NBA superstar husband and their daughter at a sold-out memorial service for the two.<\/p>\n

They were among nine people killed last month in a helicopter crash in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

Speaking at times through tears, Vanessa Bryant praised her husband’s devotion as she addressed thousands of fans gathered at Staples Center.<\/p>\n

The ceremony began with performances by Beyonce and Alicia Keys. The mourners included Lakers greats such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, plus other celebrities.<\/p>\n

NBA legend Shaquille O\u2019Neal said he and his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate had a complex relationship but that they always respected each other and never took things too seriously. The two won three NBA championships together.<\/p>\n

A weeping Michael Jordan told the crowd that \u201cwhen Kobe Bryant died, a piece of me died.\u201d He said a piece of everyone in the crowd died as well. Jordan urged people to use the inspiration of Bryant\u2019s life for their own.<\/p>\n

Bryant\u2019s widow sues over helicopter crash<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The widow of Kobe Bryant has sued the owner of the helicopter that crashed in fog and killed her husband and her 13-year-old daughter last month.<\/p>\n

The wrongful death lawsuit filed by Vanessa Bryant in Los Angeles says the pilot was careless and negligent by flying in cloudy conditions Jan. 26 and should have aborted the flight. The pilot was among the nine people killed in the crash.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit was filed as a public memorial service for Kobe Bryant and his daughter was being held at the arena where Bryant played most of his career.<\/p>\n

Emil Bemstrom scored 4:35 into overtime to send the Jackets past the Senators, 4-3. Ottawa took a 3-2 lead on Colin White\u2019s goal 9:16 into the third period, but Columbus countered with Stefan Matteau\u2019s (mah-TOHZ\u2019) tally 29 seconds later.<\/p>\n

The Hurricanes parted with forwards Erik Haula (HAH\u2019-lah) and Lucas Wallmark, along with two prospects for Trocheck.<\/p>\n

Packers sign Crosby to extension<\/p>\n

UNDATED (AP) \u2014 The Green Bay Packers have signed longtime placekicker Mason Crosby to a three-year\u00a0contract extension.<\/p>\n

Crosby, who turns 36 in September, has been with the Packers since being selected in the sixth round of the 2007 draft. He’s appeared in every game since then. His string of 208 games are second in Packers history to Brett Favre’s 255.<\/p>\n

Crosby is one of four NFL players to appear in every regular-season game since 2007, joining former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, Baltimore punter Sam Koch, and Dallas long snapper L.P. LaDouceur. He’s the franchise leader in points, field goals, 50-yard field goals and extra points.<\/p>\n

TOKYO (AP) \u2014 The longest-serving member of the International Olympic Committee estimates there’s a three-month window to decide the fate of the Tokyo Olympics. The games are being threatened by the fast-spreading virus from China. IOC member Dick Pound tells the Associated Press \u201cyou could certainly go to two months out if you had to.\u201d The Olympics open on July 24. Pound says if the virus has not abetted by then \u201cyou are probably looking at a cancellation. This is the new war and you have to face it.\u201d Pound said he was speaking for himself, not for the IOC. He no longer serves on the IOC’s executive board where he was a member for two decades. He also sounded a hopeful note and urged athletes to keep training. He says \u201cas far as we know you’re going to be in Tokyo.”<\/p>\n

CAIRO (AP) \u2014 Egypt’s state TV says the country’s former President Hosni Mubarak, ousted in the 2011 Arab Spring uprising, has died at 91. The TV says Mubarak died at a Cairo hospital where he had recently undergone surgery. The report said he had health complications but offered no other details. Mubarak, who was in power for almost three decades, was forced to resign on Feb. 11, 2011, after following 18 days of protests around the country. The Arab Spring uprisings had convulsed autocratic regimes across the Middle East. Mubarak ruled for nearly 30 years and was the resolute face of stability in the region before being forced out by the military.<\/p>\n

NEW DELHI (AP) \u2014 President Donald Trump says he’s optimistic about the prospects of inking a trade deal with India. Trump commented on the final day of his two-day visit to the country. Trump met Tuesday in New Delhi with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump said after the meeting that their respective teams had \u201cmade tremendous progress” on a comprehensive trade agreement. Elsewhere in the capital city, new violence erupted a day after at least seven people, including a police officer. The clashes were over a new Indian citizenship law that provides fast-track naturalization for some foreign-born religious minorities but not Muslims.<\/p>\n

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) \u2014 The United Arab Emirates has banned all flights to and from Iran over the outbreak of the new coronavirus, just a day after its spread was announced across multiple Mideast nations from the Islamic Republic. A spokesman at Iran\u2019s Health Ministry says that the outbreak of the new coronavirus has killed 15 people in the Islamic Republic amid 95 confirmed cases. That\u2019s according to Kianoush Jahanpour, who gave the figure in an interview Tuesday on Iranian state television.
