(AP) — The University of Mary in Bismarck is joining other American universities with ties to Italy that have temporarily closed campuses there amid the coronavirus outbreak. The school said Wednesday it is closing its Rome campus for now. The U.S. government has escalated travel advisories to Italy in recent weeks and is now advising against nonessential travel. Italy is the epicenter of Europe’s coronavirus outbreak. More than 100 people have died and more than 3,000 have been infected. The Bismarck Tribune reports the university had 25 students in Rome this semester, seven of whom returned home last week.

In sports…

Jamestown (uj.edu) The University of Jamestown’s Mason Walters has been named the 2019-20 Great Plains Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in men’s basketball.

Mason Walters,is the North Dakota Mr. Basketball recipient for the Jamestown Blue Jays in 2018-19, led the Jimmies with 8.7 rebounds per game and averaged 14.2 points per night.

Walters missed eight this season due to a foot injury.

The Jimmies finished the season with a record of 18-13 falling at Dakota Wesleyan in the opening round of the GPAC postseason tournament in Mitchell, South Dakota last week.

In world and national news…

BANGKOK (AP) — The World Health Organization is urging global governments to pull out all the stops against the new virus. As China, after many arduous weeks, appeared to be winning its epic, costly battle against the outbreak, the fight was revving up in newly affected areas of the globe. The disruption is profoundly impacting billions of people. The WHO says there are about 17 times as many new infections outside China as in it, with widening outbreaks in South Korea, Italy and Iran. Countries desperate to slow the spread are tightening travel restrictions. Italy urged people to stand apart from each other.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Scrambling to keep the coronavirus at bay, officials have ordered a cruise ship to hold off the California coast to await testing of those aboard, after a passenger on an earlier voyage died and at least one other became infected. A Coast Guard helicopter is expected to deliver test kits to the Grand Princess once it reaches the waters off San Francisco later in the day. Princess Cruises says fewer than 100 of those aboard have been identified for testing.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks Thursday were sliding more than 3% on Wall Street, at one point cutting another 1,000 points off the Dow Jones Industrial Average, as fear about a fast-spreading virus once again grips markets. Thursday’s drop nearly wiped out the surge of 4.5% the day earlier. Treasury yields sank again toward more record lows as investors plowed money into low-risk investments. The yield on the 10-year Treasury, a benchmark for mortgages, fell to 0.92%. Markets have been stuck on an up-and-down roller coaster for weeks because of uncertainty about how much damage the outbreak of the new coronavirus will do to the global economy.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Elizabeth Warren has ended her Democratic presidential bid after a disappointing finish in Super Tuesday states. The Massachusetts senator told supporters Thursday she refuses to “let disappointment blind” her. Warren has spoken to front-runners Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden but said she will wait to make a decision on whom to endorse. Warren’s campaign had the markers of success: robust poll numbers, impressive fundraising and a national organization. But she was squeezed out by Sanders, who had an immovable base of voters she needed to advance. In the end, Warren didn’t even win her home state, finishing third behind Biden and Sanders.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer says he “should not have used the words I used” when he said two Supreme Court justices would “pay the price” for their decisions on an abortion case. Schumer is responding after his Republican colleagues strongly criticized him and Chief Justice John Roberts said the words were “inappropriate” and “dangerous.” Schumer directed the comments at Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh at a rally Wednesday while a significant abortion case was being argued at the high court.
