(AP) &#8211; North Dakota officials say counts of<br \/>\nvisitors indicate the state&#8217;s tourism industry has rebounded from<br \/>\nlast year&#8217;s flooding that put a damper on summer travel.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state Tourism Division says that compared to the same time<br \/>\nperiod a year ago, visitors in the second quarter of this year were<br \/>\nup 24 percent at North Dakota&#8217;s state parks, up 25 percent at<br \/>\nnational parks and up 13 percent at major attractions.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Division Director Sara Otte Coleman says the warm spring<br \/>\ncombined with pent-up demand after last year&#8217;s flooding has been<br \/>\ngreat for the state&#8217;s tourism industry.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Coleman says tourism spending also has been strong. She says<br \/>\ntaxable sales tied to tourism in the first quarter of this year<br \/>\nwere up nearly 38 percent from a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Fargo man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman, punching a man who was helping her, and threatening to kill both of them with a knife.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n28-year-old Dustin Louis Vaughn made his first court appearance Thursday on felony charges of gross sexual imposition and terrorizing.<\/p>\n<p>He also is charged with misdemeanor charges of simple assault and criminal mischief for allegedly slashing the woman&#8217;s tires.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The male victim told police he was helping the woman get property out of her apartment Tuesday when Vaughn arrived and punched him. The man was able to get away.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The woman reported that Vaughn then assaulted her. Vaughn later allegedly approached the woman and the male victim and threatened to kill them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; American Crystal Sugar Co. officials say the<br \/>\ncompany&#8217;s chief executive officer will not be attending a proposed<br \/>\nmeeting with locked-out union workers.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The union has invited Crystal Sugar CEO Dave Berg to an Aug. 16<br \/>\ngathering that union negotiator Steven Bertelli on Wednesday<br \/>\ndescribed as an &#8220;informative, constructive discussion that could<br \/>\ncontribute to productive negotiations.&#8221;<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In a letter posted on the Crystal website, a lawyer for the<br \/>\ncompany says the issues have been outlined in 21 negotiating<br \/>\nsessions and a public meeting will not resolve the dispute.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 About 1,300 workers have been locked out of their jobs for more<br \/>\nthan a year at facilities in Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The union says the contract offer is unfair, particularly on<br \/>\nseniority and job security, and voted against it three times.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota exports the first half of<br \/>\n2012 were up 24 percent over the year, and the oil boom played a<br \/>\nrole.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The U.S. Commercial Service says oil exports jumped 47 percent<br \/>\nfrom 2011, to $438 million.<\/p>\n<p>The agency notes that most of North Dakota&#8217;s crude exports return to the U.S. via a pipeline that briefly enters Canada.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There also were big increases in the export of North Dakota farm<br \/>\nand construction equipment the first six months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Wheat exports were down 21 percent to $96 million. Agriculture Department statistics show that wheat production in the state last year was<br \/>\ndown 43 percent from 2010, largely due to flooding.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Total U.S. exports the first half of the year were up 7 percent<br \/>\nfrom 2011.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Officials don&#8217;t believe extreme drought in<br \/>\nother states has anything to do with Japanese beetles showing up in<br \/>\nNorth Dakota for only the second time in 52 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The pests that feast on everything from rose bushes to corn<br \/>\ncrops are most prevalent in states east of the Mississippi River,<br \/>\nmany of whom are dealing with extreme drought.<\/p>\n<p>But North Dakota State University entomologist Jan Knodel (kuh-NOH&#8217;-duhl) says the beetles don&#8217;t fly such long distances, and they prefer hotter,<br \/>\ndrier weather anyway.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Knodel speculates the beetles found in traps in eastern North<br \/>\nDakota hitched a ride on trucks bringing nursery plants to North<br \/>\nDakota from Minnesota, which has established populations of the<br \/>\nbugs.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota doesn&#8217;t. Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring<br \/>\nsays officials will work to keep it that way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota officials say farmers, ranchers, homeowners and others turned in a record amount of old, unusable and banned pesticides last month in a state collection program.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring says more than 145 tons of pesticides were collected in Project Safe Send. He says that far exceeds the 108 tons collected two years ago.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Goehring says most of the pesticides collected in the effort are agricultural and home products that no longer are registered for use in North Dakota, are damaged or are no longer needed by their owners.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The collections were conducted in July in 12 communities across North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Fees paid by pesticide manufacturers to register their products in North Dakota are used to pay for the collection effort.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The oil boom keeps moving east.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The northeastern North Dakota city of Grand Forks has created a<br \/>\nnew website as part of a campaign to recruit oil patch companies to<br \/>\nthe region.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 City officials say three companies have announced expansion<br \/>\nplans into the region to meet growing demands from the oil industry<br \/>\nfor their products. One company, Steffes Corp., is expanding its<br \/>\nDickinson plant to Grand Forks.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Grand Forks Mayor Michael Brown says the city believes it can<br \/>\nhelp companies who are looking for space to expand.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The site is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.accessthebakken.com\">www.accessthebakken.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A group says it will stop airing a<br \/>\ntelevision ad that is critical of North Dakota Democratic U.S.<br \/>\nSenate candidate Heidi Heitkamp&#8217;s record as attorney general.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The ad claims when Heitkamp was attorney general during the<br \/>\n1990s, she spent taxpayer money on private airplanes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Heitkamp on Thursday called the charge &#8220;completely false&#8221; and<br \/>\nasked TV stations to quit running it.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was produced by Crossroads GPS, an organization that supports<br \/>\nRepublicans.<\/p>\n<p>A Crossroads spokesman says the ad has been taken down<br \/>\nvoluntarily.<\/p>\n<p>The group had intended to spend $191,000 running it into the middle of next week.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Heitkamp says when she was attorney general, her office got two<br \/>\nsurplus planes for free from the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n<p>One was flown on anti-drug missions.
