BELLEVUE, NEB. (VCSU<\/a>)\u2013 The Valley City State women’s basketball team battled throughout Saturday’s game at Bellevue but a 15-2 run to close the fourth quarter lifted the Bruins over the Vikings, 73-54.<\/p>\n

“It was a tough game for us tonight. We didn’t do what we needed to in order to win. We didn’t execute.” said head coach Vanessa Johnson<\/a>. “They wanted it more in the fourth quarter. But the season isn’t over, and we still have a lot to play for. We need to get better.”<\/p>\n

Valley City State drops to 2-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference. Bellevue improves to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.<\/p>\n

Bellevue opened up with a 19-13 advantage in the first 10 minutes, but Valley City State answered back in the second quarter. The Vikings took an eight-point run capped by a three-pointer from Allie Critchley<\/a> to tie it up at 23-23 with 5:51 before the half. The Bruins and Vikings traded baskets and held onto a 34-34 tie at halftime.<\/p>\n

The two NSAA teams continued to battle throughout the third quarter with neither team leading by more than six points. The Bruins opened the fourth quarter with eight straight points and never looked back en route to the 73-54 victory over the Vikings.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 30 percent from the field (19-64), 30 percent on three-pointers (8-27), and 67 percent from the free throw line (8-12). Bellevue shot 46 percent from the field (27-59), 38 percent on three-pointers (8-21), and 69 percent on free throws (11-16).<\/p>\n

The Vikings committed just 11 turnovers Saturday while Bellevue tallied 13. Bellevue held the rebounding advantage 44-37 and tallied 17 assists as a team.<\/p>\n

Adriana Torres<\/a> paced the Vikings with 15 points and eight rebounds while Maara Nelson<\/a> added nine points and eight boards. Taryn Dieterle<\/a> and Alexis Bentz<\/a> each added eight points for the Vikings Saturday.<\/p>\n

Bellevue was led by Elexis Martinez with 17 points while Faith Ross added 14. Laura Jurek pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the Bruins.<\/p>\n

UP NEXT:<\/strong> Valley City State returns home next weekend to host Waldorf University on Friday, Jan. 15, at 5:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

BELLEVUE, NEB.\u00a0\u00a0 (VCSU<\/a>)\u2013 The Valley City State men’s basketball team saw its nine-game win streak come to an end Saturday. The Vikings overcame a 21-point deficit late in the second half but couldn’t finish the comeback as the Vikings fell to Bellevue, 77-69.<\/p>\n

Valley City State falls to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in the North Star Athletic Association. Bellevue improves to 11-9 overall and 4-1 in the NSAA.<\/p>\n

The Vikings had three players score in double figures Saturday, led by Jalen Addison<\/a> who scored 18 points, including three 3’s and a perfect 5-for-5 on free throws. Kevin Schramm<\/a> added a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds while Hunter Sand<\/a> contributed 12 points and nine rebounds for the Vikings.<\/p>\n

Valley City State opened with a 15-6 run Saturday to hold a large lead over Bellevue in the first seven minutes of play. The Bruins then closed out the first half with a 19-4 run to hold a 36-24 advantage at the buzzer.<\/p>\n

The Bruins led by as much as 21 points after opening the second half with a 10-1 run. With 12:53 on the clock, a layup from Chris Thompson<\/a> sparked a 12-0 run for the Vikings to get within six points. The Vikings continued to inch closer as Kevin Schramm<\/a>‘s three-pointer tied the game at 59-59 with 5:52 to play. The Bruins scored the next six straight points and the Vikings would never recover as they fell to Bellevue, 77-69.<\/p>\n

Valley City State shot 37 percent from the field (25-67), 37 percent on three-pointers (7-19), and 75 percent from the free throw line (12-16). Bellevue shot 45 percent from the field (29-65), 12 percent on three-pointers (2-17), and 65 percent on free throws (17-26).<\/p>\n

The Bruins tallied 52 points in the paint and 21 fast break points Saturday while the Vikings totaled 30 points in the paint and just five fast break points. The Bruins also held the rebounding advantage, 44-39.<\/p>\n

Jemeil King led the Bruins with 28 points and six rebounds. Lewis Hayes, Jaylen Wiltz, and Michael Wright also scored in double figures for Bellevue.<\/p>\n

UP NEXT:<\/strong> The Vikings return home on Tuesday, Jan. 12, for a non-conference game against Oak Hills Christian College. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
