(AP) &#8211; Authorities are working to determine the<br \/>\ncause of a fire that destroyed a motel in the North Dakota town of<br \/>\nSteele.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Lone Steer Motel in the town just off Interstate 94 burned<br \/>\nto the ground Sunday morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0All of the two dozen people in the building got out safely, though some had to exit second-floor windows, make a short drop to another roof and then jump into the bed of a pickup truck parked next to the motel.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Chief David Feland says arson has not been ruled out. Two arson investigators with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are being called in.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi- T.V. News) &#8212; The James River Humane Society continues to receive support from the community in the form of fundraisers.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday\u2019s (Aug 10, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on Csi Cable 2, President, Jennifer Barnard thanked Hugo\u2019s for their fundraiser of having the option to purchase paw prints at the register and some profits of Pepsi going to JRHS.<\/p>\n<p>A thank you also went out to all the members of the local Hog Chapter and Stutsman Harley Davidson for the huge success of the annual Hogs for Dogs event.<\/p>\n<p>She thanked Coborn\u2019s for donating profits from their root beer float stand at Crazy Days\u2026Kemps contributed a portable soda fountain for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Ms Barnard pointed out that donations to the shelter are made from profits from recycling beverage cans and used batteries.<\/p>\n<p>She said just bring them to Gerdau Ameristeel at 1510 10st SE, open M-F 8am-5pm. Just let them know you would like JRHS\u2019s account credited for your drop off.<\/p>\n<p>She pointed out that, Lloyd\u2019s Motors fundraiser for JRHS will be in September, with more details later.<\/p>\n<p>-First Community Credit Union is planning fundraisers in the upcoming months to benefit JRHS.<\/p>\n<p>The shelter now has window clings in with the James River Humane Society\u2019s new logo.<\/p>\n<p>They are $5 and will be sold at the shelter and fundraising events.<\/p>\n<p>She added the shelter continues to appreciate all donated items from community supporters.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Barnard pointed out that as of Friday there are 18 cats and 12 dogs available for adoption.<\/p>\n<p>For more information on adoption, or how to volunteer, or donate supplies, contact the James River Humane Society at 252-0747.<\/p>\n<p>The shelter is open every day, and is located off the I-94 Bloom Exit.<\/p>\n<p>The shelter is always looking for treats for the animals (especially rawhides), and cleaning items.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News) \u2013 The North Dakota Highway Patrol is sponsoring a free car seat checkup to be held today (Monday, August 13<sup>t, 2012) <\/sup>\u00a0at the Jamestown Wal-Mart Parking Lot from 3:00 \u2013 6:00 pm.<\/p>\n<p>Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to assist parents and caregivers in proper use and installation of their car safety seats.<\/p>\n<p>Each car seat checkup will take 20-30 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Parents should bring the car seat instructions and their vehicle owner\u2019s manual to the checkup.<\/p>\n<p>If possible, the child who rides in the seat should accompany the parent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Jamestown man accused of killing a<br \/>\nSomali immigrant is to stand trial this week at the Stutsman County<br \/>\nCourthouse.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday in the murder and<br \/>\ncriminal conspiracy trial of 34-year-old Leron Howard.<\/p>\n<p>He has pleaded not guilty in the April 2011 death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali<br \/>\nAhmed, who was beaten and stabbed before his body was dumped in a<br \/>\nditch near Spiritwood.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A Jamestown jury in February convicted 22-year-old Janelle Cave<br \/>\non manslaughter and criminal conspiracy charges in the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0She is required to testify in Howard&#8217;s trial as part of her sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Stutsman County Courthouse security will be stepped up during the trial as it was during Cave&#8217;s trial starting at the main entrance, which will effect courthouse visitors to the main floor offices and the upper flood courtrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Stutsman County Sheriff, Chad Kaiser says metal detectors will aid six officers, adding that those attending the trial should not bring handbag, or cell phones into the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>COOPERSTOWN, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A 31-year-old man sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars for shooting and beheading a North Dakota State University researcher is appealing his conviction.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Wacht is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for killing Kurt Johnson of Cooperstown.<\/p>\n<p>His attorney, Steve Mottinger, indicated he will appeal state District Judge James Hovey\u2019s denial of the defense\u2019s attempt to suppress evidence found in Wacht\u2019s rented house Mottinger argued previously that the probable cause provided by investigators to get three warrants to search Wacht\u2019s van and home was insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>On the third search, Johnson\u2019s severed head was found buried under two feet of dirt in the crawl space in Wacht\u2019s basement, with a bullet hole in the forehead.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Wacht shot Johnson after a night of drinking on Dec. 31, 2010, then cut off his head. Johnson\u2019s body hasn\u2019t been found.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators said Wacht, who was known as &#8220;Machine Gun Head&#8221; for a tattoo above his right ear, killed Johnson to show the Aryan Nation he could run a local group. Wacht was a fugitive from charges in California at the time of the killing.<\/p>\n<p>A jury in Cooperstown deliberated for two hours on April 24 before convicting Wacht of murdering Johnson. Hovey sentenced Wacht on Aug. 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A man who was convicted of hiring a hit<br \/>\nman to kill his son-in-law is asking the North Dakota Supreme Court<br \/>\nto give him a new trial.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Gene Kirkpatrick is serving a life prison term without a chance<br \/>\nfor parole for the killing of Fargo dentist Philip Gattuso<br \/>\n(gah-TOO&#8217;-soh).<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kirkpatrick was convicted of hiring a man to kill Gattuso.<br \/>\nGattuso was found beaten to death with a hammer in his Fargo home<br \/>\nin October 209.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court testimony indicated Kirkpatrick didn&#8217;t want Gattuso<br \/>\nraising his young granddaughter.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Kirkpatrick&#8217;s daughter was married to Gattuso when she died in March 2009.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Supreme Court is hearing arguments in the case on Sept. 4.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kirkpatrick says the trial judge shouldn&#8217;t have allowed his<br \/>\nstatements to police to be used against him at his trial.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota&#8217;s Supreme Court will be<br \/>\ndeciding whether locked-out workers at American Crystal Sugar Co.<br \/>\nshould collect unemployment benefits.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A group of more than 200 Crystal workers is appealing a judge&#8217;s<br \/>\ndecision that North Dakota law doesn&#8217;t allow them to get benefits.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Supreme Court has scheduled arguments in the case on Sept.<br \/>\n18.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State law says North Dakota workers can&#8217;t get unemployment money<br \/>\nif they&#8217;re involved in a labor dispute.<\/p>\n<p>But an attorney for the Crystal employees says the law refers to strikes, not a lockout.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 American Crystal employees have been locked out of company<br \/>\nfactories in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa for a year.<\/p>\n<p>Locked-out workers in Minnesota and Iowa were eligible for<br \/>\nunemployment.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Court filings say the North Dakota Supreme Court has never ruled<br \/>\non the issue.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; American Crystal Sugar Co. farmers are<br \/>\nstarting their beet harvest this week.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the earliest start in the Red River Valley cooperative&#8217;s history.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The pre-pile harvest is to begin Tuesday, with growers getting just<br \/>\nenough beets out of the ground to get Crystal&#8217;s five processing<br \/>\nplants running.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The harvest is starting earlier than normal because farmers got<br \/>\nin the fields earlier last spring.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal spokesman Jeff Schweitzer says officials will work to make sure the harvest during warmer weather doesn&#8217;t lead to rotting problems in the beet piles at the plants.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The full-scale harvest is scheduled to begin in early October,<br \/>\nthe traditional time.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The valley&#8217;s other beet co-op, Minn-Dak Farmers, also is<br \/>\nstarting its pre-pile harvest Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Officials with a state-funded program that<br \/>\naims to turn research on North Dakota college campuses into jobs<br \/>\nare touting their private donations.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Centers of Excellence Commission says the<br \/>\nnearly $40 million in state funds that have gone toward the program<br \/>\nattracted matching investments of $157 million from 185 companies<br \/>\nin six years.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The\u00a0 program has been credited with creating 973 jobs at an estimated annual payroll of $52.1 million.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Mark Nisbet, an Xcel Energy executive and chairman of the<br \/>\ncommission, says the Centers of Excellence are supporting<br \/>\nbusinesses that are making investments in North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nisbet cites a decision by Caterpillar to invest $50 million to<br \/>\nexpand its plant in West Fargo, to have access to expertise at<br \/>\nNorth Dakota State University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The crime rate in North Dakota&#8217;s largest city<br \/>\nhas been going down in the last five years, but police say the<br \/>\ntrend may be changing in downtown Fargo.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police say the number of reported crimes in the downtown<br \/>\ndistrict is up 62 percent through July, compared to reports at the<br \/>\nsame point a year ago.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crimes against people are up 15 percent.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Police Lt.
