Jamestown, ND\u00a0 (KCSi-T.V.News Aug 14, 2012) — Jury selection will continue in Southeast District Court in Jamestown, for the trial of 34 year old Leron Howard of Jamestown.<\/p>\n

81 potential jurors have been called for the process that started Tuesday (Aug 14, 2012) at the Stutsman County Courthouse.<\/p>\n

The prospective jurors were questioned by court-appointed defense attorney<\/p>\n

Steven Mottinger, as six individuals were removed for consideration on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The reasons for being excused from jury duty included preconceived notions about the case, along with child care needs, and disabilities.<\/p>\n

Opening arguments could take place on Wednesday, afternoon with testimony starting on Thursday.<\/p>\n

Howard\u2019s request of a change in venue for his trial, was denied by Southeast District Court Judge, Thomas Merrick.<\/p>\n

Howard claimed that media coverage of Janelle Cave\u2019s trial, in Jamestown, made it impossible to find a fair and impartial jury.<\/p>\n

Merrick expanded the jury pool to include 20 residents from neighboring Barnes County.<\/p>\n

Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy, both Class AA Felonies, in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed of Jamestown, who was 18 years old at the time of his death.<\/p>\n

Ahmed\u2019s body was found in a roadside ditch, near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011, with the cause of death in the autopsy report as a result of stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.<\/p>\n

In February, of this year, co-defendant Janelle Cave, of Jamestown was found guilty in Southeast District Court, of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy in Ahmed\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

Cave was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison, and is appealing her conviction in North Dakota Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

As part of her sentence, she is required to testify against Howard at his trial.<\/p>\n

Stutsman County Courthouse security is stepped up during the trial as it was during Cave\u2019s trial starting at the main entrance, which will effect courthouse visitors to the main floor offices and the upper floor courtrooms.<\/p>\n

Stutsman County Sheriff, Chad Kaiser says metal detectors is aiding six officers, adding that those attending the trial should not bring handbag, or cell phones into the courthouse.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 13, 2012) — Stutsman County, through an agreement with Richland County, has contracted with CodeRED to allow anyone the opportunity to receive emergency notifications requiring immediate action and weather warnings for free.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday\u2019s (Aug 14, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Emergency Manager, and 9-1-1-Coordinator, Jerry Berguist said, currently, only the 9,000 residential landline phones in Stutsman County will receive emergency notifications from the County.<\/p>\n

He pointed out there is no additional cost for Stutsman County residents, as the cost is a part of the 9-1-1 fee.<\/p>\n

Any business line, cell phone line, VoIP phone line, email address, or text messaging capable phone needs to register for the service by logging onto the Stutsman County website at www.stutsmancounty.org<\/a><\/p>\n

Once on the site, click the link to be directed to the secured “CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment” page.<\/p>\n

Required information to register includes first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, and phone numbers to be entered.<\/p>\n

An exact address is needed due to the geographically based delivery system that CodeRED uses.<\/p>\n

The registration page also allows users the opportunity to sign up to receive emergency weather warnings.<\/p>\n

This is an opt-in service only.<\/p>\n

Anyone wishing to use this service must register by opting in on the enrollment page, including residential landline phones.<\/p>\n

Users have the option to receive alerts anytime the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, severe weather warning or flash flood warning for the address entered on the enrollment page.<\/p>\n

Only users that are registered for the service will receive the message.<\/p>\n

In addition, you will only be warned if you live in the warned polygon that the National Weather Service has issued a warning for.<\/p>\n

For example, if a “tornado warning,” is issued for only Northeast Stutsman County, the phone in Jamestown, and other parts of the county will not be called concerning the warning.<\/p>\n

A test of the CodeRED system will be initiated for all of Stutsman County Thursday, August 16, 2012 in the afternoon. (note change). All Stutsman County land lines will be called, and any cell phone, or other opt-in services signed up for before the test will be included in Thursday afternoon\u2019s test.<\/p>\n

Normal text messaging rates apply to users who decide to opt in for the text messaging service.<\/p>\n

Phone apps for Smart Phones is also available for a fee, through app stores, enabling users to be notified by the CodeRED system as they travel.<\/p>\n

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News ) — A local agencyand businesses will carry on with the Coats for Kids Campaign.<\/p>\n

Since KVLY will not be running the “Coats for Kids” program this year, Ave Maria Village along with the Salvation Army and One Hour Martinizing are continuing the collection program for this area.<\/p>\n

Tom Geffre, Chaplain at Ave Maria Village, Chaplain, Tom Geffre, says, “When I called KVLY to ask when they would be beginning the “Coats for Kids” drive this year, I was told that the television station decided to try a different public relations program this year and they were discontinuing the Coats campaign for now”.<\/p>\n

Geffre says he talked with the Lt. Brecto at the Jamestown Salvation Army and he too was surprised with KVLY\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n

Brecto says that the Salvation Army has a great need for winter clothing and was glad that something was being done in this area to collect the needed coats, gloves, winter caps, boots and snow suits of all sizes.<\/p>\n

Collection sites in Jamestown will be Ave Maria Village, the Salvation Army and One Hour Martinizing.<\/p>\n

The local campaign will run from August 16 \u2013 September 8.<\/p>\n

It is requested that any donated winter items mentioned above be clean and in good working order.<\/p>\n

Drop off items at any of the collections sites during business hours.<\/p>\n

\u00a0STEELE, N.D. (AP) – The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and
\nExplosives is joining the investigation into a weekend fire that
\ndestroyed a popular motel in the North Dakota town of Steele.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation requested that
\nthe ATF’s National Response Team and special agents join the
\ninvestigation into the fire of the Lone Steer Motel.<\/p>\n

The motel, located about 40 miles east of Bismarck in Steele, burned to the
\nground Sunday morning.<\/p>\n

Special Agent Bernard J. Zapor says ATF is investigating the
\nfire jointly with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the
\nNorth Dakota Fire Marshal’s Office.
\nA 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of starting the fire.<\/p>\n

All of the two dozen people in the building got out safely.<\/p>\n

\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – A Montana man who told investigators that
\na dream led him to kidnap and kill a man in North Dakota says he
\nwill not cooperate with psychological or psychiatric evaluations.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forty-two-year-old John Bridges, of Missoula, pleaded guilty
\nlast week to felony murder and kidnapping charges in the death of
\n40-year-old Lee Edward Clay.<\/p>\n

Clay was found dead in a van that crashed in a ditch off Interstate 94 on July 6. An officer became suspicious that Clay’s injuries didn’t match the severity of the crash.
\nFollowing Bridges plea, judge Cynthia Feland ordered he undergo
\npsychiatric and psychological evaluations as part of a presentence
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n

Bridges did not protest the order at the time but later wrote two letters to Feland arguing against the evaluations.<\/p>\n

\u3000MANDAN, N.D. (AP) – A Mandan woman has been sentenced to 20
\nyears in prison for having sex with a boy numerous times over a
\nspan of 1 1\/2 years.
\n34-year-old Jenelle Chase was found guilty of sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy who was under her care.
\nChase is also required to serve five years of probation, register as a sex offender and stay away from children under 18.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Credit card users in North Dakota and
\nSouth Dakota have some of the nation’s lowest rates of credit card
\ndebt, and some of the best records for paying on time.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 A report by the TransUnion credit reporting agency says North
\nDakota has the nation’s lowest credit card delinquency rate, at
\n0.36 percent. South Dakota is the next lowest, at 0.42 percent.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota and South Dakota are also among a group of four
\nstates whose customers have the lowest credit card debt.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 North Dakota’s average debt per borrower is about $4,000, while
\nSouth Dakota’s is about $4,200.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 TransUnion says the average national credit card debt per
\nborrower is almost $5,000.<\/p>\n

The average delinquency rate is 0.63 percent.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Federal regulators may keep biologists
\nwatching for whooping cranes near a North Dakota wind farm, even
\nthough the birds haven’t been seen in the area for two years.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basin Electric Power Cooperative has placed observers at the
\nfacility south of Minot since 2010.<\/p>\n

Migrating whooping cranes normally pass through in the spring and fall.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basin is required to shut down its turbines if a whooping crane
\nwas spotted within a mile of the wind farm.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Basin spokesman Daryl Hill says biologists have never seen a
\nwhooping crane in the North Dakota area.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But Hill says turbines had to be turned off this spring at the
\ncompany’s wind farm in southeast South Dakota after a pair of the
\nbig birds were spotted.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) – The Republican candidate for North Dakota
\nPublic Service Commission says he’s tired of his opponent’s attacks
\non two of the commission’s incumbent Republicans.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State Sen. Randy Christmann says Democratic candidate Brad
\nCrabtree’s criticism of commissioners Kevin Cramer and Brian Kalk
\nis hypocritical, and says they detract from the campaign.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crabtree has suggested that Cramer and Kalk are ignoring the
\nstate’s anti-bribery law by accepting campaign contributions from
\nindustries they regulate.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Christmann is holding news conferences Tuesday in Fargo and
\nBismarck. He says Cramer and Kalk have done nothing wrong because
\nthe donations are from individuals, not companies.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Hazen senator says Crabtree is exercising the same practice
\nby accepting money from “militant environmentalists.”
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Crabtree has not criticized Christmann for campaign donations he
\nhas received.<\/p>\n

Crabtree wasn’t immediately available for comment.<\/p>\n

\u00a0GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Two men and a woman are charged with
\narranging for a 17-year-old girl to have sex with older men.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The human trafficking charges against 29-year-old Travis
\nJohnson, 27-year-old Joshua Harry and 22-year-old Amanda Stewart
\ncarry a maximum penalty of life in prison.<\/p>\n

They were filed in state district court in Grand Forks.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 They’re accused of pimping a 17-year-old girl to older men for
\nsex from November 2010 to April 2011.<\/p>\n

Prosecutors say they advertised an “escort service” on a website.
\n\u00a0Johnson also faces a felony charge of corruption of a minor.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Prosecutors say he had sex with the girl before he started pimping her, and that he knew she was 17 when he did it.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0

CLE ELUM, Wash. (AP) – A fast-moving wildfire in Washington
\nstate has burned at least 60 homes and forced about 400 people to
\nflee.<\/p>\n

Fire officials say the blaze in central Washington has raced
\nacross 40 square miles since it started Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

It’s just one of several wildfires burning across the West.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) – President Barack Obama is accusing Mitt
\nRomney of wanting to maintain billions of dollars in taxpayer
\nsubsidies for oil companies rather than investing in wind energy
\nand other “homegrown energy sources.”<\/p>\n

Obama is campaigning in Iowa, a center of wind energy production. Romney, meanwhile, is visiting Ohio’s coal country.<\/p>\n

He accuses the Obama administration of waging a “war on coal” through regulations that make it harder to build new coal-fired plants.
