(AP) &#8211; A 50-year-old Texas man has been charged with setting the fire that destroyed the Lone Steer Motel in Steele.<br \/>\nAllen Thomas could spend up to 10 years in prison if he&#8217;s convicted on the arson charge.<br \/>\nThomas is from Houston. \u00a0He&#8217;s being held in the McLean County<br \/>\njail in Washburn.<\/p>\n<p>Thomas has a court hearing scheduled Wednesday so a judge can set his bond.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Steele Police Chief David Feland says Thomas is being held in<br \/>\nMcLean County because the jails in nearby Burleigh and Morton<br \/>\ncounties were both full.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 State authorities and the federal Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol,<br \/>\nFirearms and Explosives are investigating the Sunday morning fire.<br \/>\nThe federal agency estimates the damage at $1.5 million.<\/p>\n<p>No one was reported injured.<\/p>\n<p>The fire displaced about two dozen people.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 13, 2012) &#8212; Stutsman County, through an agreement with Richland County, has contracted with CodeRED to allow anyone the opportunity to receive emergency notifications requiring immediate action and weather warnings for free.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday\u2019s (Aug 14, 2012) Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Emergency Manager, and 9-1-1-Coordinator, Jerry Berguist said, currently, only the 9,000 residential landline phones in Stutsman County will receive emergency notifications from the County.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out there is no additional cost for Stutsman County residents, as the cost is a part of the 9-1-1 fee.<\/p>\n<p>Any business line, cell phone line, VoIP phone line, email address, or text messaging capable phone needs to register for the service by logging onto the Stutsman County website at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stutsmancounty.org\/\"><strong>www.stutsmancounty.org<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once on the site, click the link to be directed to the secured &#8220;CodeRED Community Notification Enrollment&#8221; page.<\/p>\n<p>Required information to register includes first and last name, street address, city, state, zip code, and phone numbers to be entered.<\/p>\n<p>An exact address is needed due to the geographically based delivery system that CodeRED uses.<\/p>\n<p>The registration page also allows users the opportunity to sign up to receive emergency weather warnings.<\/p>\n<p>This is an opt-in service only.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone wishing to use this service must register by opting in on the enrollment page, including residential landline phones.<\/p>\n<p>Users have the option to receive alerts anytime the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, severe weather warning or flash flood warning for the address entered on the enrollment page.<\/p>\n<p>Only users that are registered for the service will receive the message.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, you will only be warned if you live in the warned polygon that the National Weather Service has issued a warning for.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if a &#8220;tornado warning,&#8221; is issued for only Northeast Stutsman County, the phone in Jamestown, and other parts of the county will not be called concerning the warning.<\/p>\n<p>A test of the CodeRED system will be initiated for all of Stutsman County Thursday, August 16, 2012 <strong>in the afternoon. <\/strong>(note change). All Stutsman County land lines will be called, and any cell phone, or other opt-in services signed up for before the test will be included in Thursday afternoon\u2019s test.<\/p>\n<p>Normal text messaging rates apply to users who decide to opt in for the text messaging service.<\/p>\n<p>Phone apps for Smart Phones is also available for a fee, through app stores, enabling users to be notified by the CodeRED system as they travel.<\/p>\n<p>If there are any questions regarding the system, please call Stutsman County Emergency Management at 701-252-9093.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 14, 2012) &#8212; Jury selection will continue in Southeast District Court in Jamestown, for the trial of 34 year old Leron Howard of Jamestown.<\/p>\n<p>81 potential jurors have been called for the process that started Tuesday (Aug 14, 2012) at the Stutsman County Courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>The prospective jurors were questioned by court-appointed defense attorney<\/p>\n<p>Steven Mottinger, as six individuals were removed for consideration on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The reasons for being excused from jury duty included preconceived notions about the case, along with child care needs, and disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Opening arguments could take place on Wednesday, afternoon with testimony starting on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Howard\u2019s request of a change in venue for his trial, was denied by Southeast District Court Judge, Thomas Merrick.<\/p>\n<p>Howard claimed that media coverage of Janelle Cave\u2019s trial, in Jamestown, made it impossible to find a fair and impartial jury.<\/p>\n<p>Merrick expanded the jury pool to include 20 residents from neighboring Barnes County.<\/p>\n<p>Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy, both Class AA Felonies, in the death of Abdi Ali Ahmed of Jamestown, who was 18 years old at the time of his death.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed\u2019s body was found in a roadside ditch, near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011, with the cause of death in the autopsy report as a result of stab wounds and blunt force trauma to the head.<\/p>\n<p>In February, of this year, co-defendant 22 year old Janelle Cave, of Jamestown was found guilty in Southeast District Court, of manslaughter and criminal conspiracy in Ahmed\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p>Cave was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison, and is appealing her conviction in North Dakota Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>As part of her sentence, she is required to testify against Howard at his trial.<\/p>\n<p>Stutsman County Courthouse security is stepped up during the trial as it was during Cave\u2019s trial starting at the main entrance, which will effect courthouse visitors to the main floor offices and the upper floor courtrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Stutsman County Sheriff, Chad Kaiser says metal detectors is aiding six officers, adding that those attending the trial should not bring handbag, or cell phones into the courthouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News ) &#8212; A local agency and businesses will carry on with the Coats for Kids Campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Since KVLY will not be running the &#8220;Coats for Kids&#8221; program this year, Ave Maria Village along with the Salvation Army and One Hour Martinizing are continuing the collection program for this area.<\/p>\n<p>Chaplain at Ave Maria Village, Chaplain, Tom Geffre, says, &#8220;When I called KVLY to ask when they would be beginning the &#8220;Coats for Kids&#8221; drive this year, I was told that the television station decided to try a different public relations program this year and they were discontinuing the Coats campaign for now&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Geffre says he talked with the Lt. Brecto at the Jamestown Salvation Army and he too was surprised with KVLY\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>Brecto says that the Salvation Army has a great need for winter clothing and was glad that something was being done in this area to collect the needed coats, gloves, winter caps, boots and snow suits of all sizes.<\/p>\n<p>Collection sites in Jamestown will be Ave Maria Village, the Salvation Army and One Hour Martinizing.<\/p>\n<p>The local campaign will run from August 16 \u2013 September 8.<\/p>\n<p>It is requested that any donated winter items mentioned above be clean and in good working order.<\/p>\n<p>Drop off items at any of the collections sites during business hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) &#8211; The death of a North Dakota man whose<br \/>\nbody was found along railroad tracks in western Minnesota in March<br \/>\nhas been ruled accidental.<\/p>\n<p>The Clay County sheriff&#8217;s office finished its investigation into the death of 27-year-old Jared Nilles of Fargo last week. Authorities believe Nilles opened a door on a moving train and fell out.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A Montana man who told investigators that<br \/>\na dream led him to kidnap and kill a man in North Dakota says he<br \/>\nwill not cooperate with psychological or psychiatric evaluations.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Forty-two-year-old John Bridges, of Missoula, pleaded guilty<br \/>\nlast week to felony murder and kidnapping charges in the death of<br \/>\n40-year-old Lee Edward Clay.<\/p>\n<p>Clay was found dead in a van that crashed in a ditch off Interstate 94 on July 6.<\/p>\n<p>An officer became suspicious that Clay&#8217;s injuries didn&#8217;t match the severity of the crash.<br \/>\nFollowing Bridges plea, judge Cynthia Feland ordered he undergo<br \/>\npsychiatric and psychological evaluations as part of a presentence<br \/>\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n<p>Bridges did not protest the order at the time but later wrote two letters to Feland arguing against the evaluations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0 BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Governor Jack Dalrymple (DAHL&#8217;-rimp-ul)<br \/>\nhas declared an agricultural drought emergency due to drought<br \/>\nconditions in 50 counties in North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The declaration requires state agencies to prepare drought<br \/>\nresponse support services.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The executive order covers 50 counties as well as the five<br \/>\nIndian reservations in North Dakota.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The U.S. Drought Monitor Index shows that 87 percent of North<br \/>\nDakota is experiencing drought conditions and portions of 20<br \/>\ncounties are classified as suffering from severe drought<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) &#8211; The new chancellor of North Dakota&#8217;s<br \/>\nuniversity system wants to shake up the state&#8217;s colleges.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ham Shirvani wants to have tougher admissions standards for the<br \/>\nsystem&#8217;s 11 public colleges.<\/p>\n<p>North Dakota State University and the University of North Dakota would have the toughest requirements.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Remedial academic instruction would be shifted to North Dakota&#8217;s<br \/>\nfive community colleges.<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn&#8217;t take place any more at the state&#8217;s four-year schools.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state&#8217;s two-year schools would be responsible for all<br \/>\ncourses taken by high school students for college credit.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Shirvani also wants to eliminate most tuition waivers for<br \/>\nattending a North Dakota public college.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The chancellor says his proposals will stir some controversy,<br \/>\nbut he thinks they&#8217;re necessary.<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Board of Higher Education President Duaine Espegard says he<br \/>\nsupports the chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>MINOT, N.D. News) &#8212; The Jamestown High School Athletics Department and Jamestown Regional Medical Center have announced that JRMC will be the official sports medicine team for the Blue Jays, starting this school year.<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown Regional Medical center will hire a new Athletic Trainer and will be based at Jamestown High School.<\/p>\n<p>The Medical Center School District will share in the cost of hiring the athletic trainer, who will be in attendance at games and practices.<\/p>\n<p>The trainer will also help with prevention of injuries and rehabilitation of injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Jay athletes will also have access to sports medicine services at JRMC, including an orthopedic surgeon and athletic trainer.<\/p>\n<p>\u3000<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi- T.V.
