{"id":235802,"date":"2021-09-30T08:04:42","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T13:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=235802"},"modified":"2021-10-01T14:31:17","modified_gmt":"2021-10-01T19:31:17","slug":"otter-tail-power-installs-new-technology-at-wind-farm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csinewsnow.com\/?p=235802","title":{"rendered":"Otter Tail Power installs new technology at wind farm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Fergus Falls, Minnesota, September 30, 2021: <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; color: black; background: white;\">Thanks to the recent installation of a radar-activated aircraft detection lighting system (ADLS) at Otter Tail Power Company\u2019s newly operational <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">150-megawatt <span style=\"color: black; background: white;\">Merricourt Wind Energy Center, North Dakota skies are a little darker\u2014without compromising safety.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">A safe solution for darker skies<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">While flashing red warning lights on wind towers are critical to safety, they can be challenging to live with during the night. To meet residents\u2019 desire for darker skies, and stay consistent with Federal Aviation Administration safety requirements, Otter Tail Power installed DeTect\u2019s HARRIER ADLS solution at its Merricourt Wind Energy Center located in southeast North Dakota. This technology provides reliable, continuous 360-degree radar surveillance of the airspace across the 14,000-acre site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cThis radar surveillance system automatically activates obstruction lights to alert pilots only when aircraft is detected within three and a half nautical miles of the facility,\u201d said Otter Tail Power Renewable Energy Construction and Operations Manager Harvey McMahon. \u201cWarning lights remain dim until aircraft detection, keeping light at a minimum.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The North Dakota Public Service Commission stipulated installation of this technology no later than December 31, 2021. \u201cIt was important to us to minimize the impact on local communities without compromising aircraft safety in a timely manner,\u201d said McMahon. \u201cThank you to all who played a part in planning, installing, and testing this technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cThis light mitigation technology is one of the ways companies like Otter Tail Power are mitigating the impact of energy development on North Dakota\u2019s landscape,\u201d said North Dakota Public Service Commissioner Julie Fedorchak. \u201cWe\u2019re excited about this technology and its ability to help preserve North Dakota\u2019s beautiful night skies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Part of a cleaner energy future<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The\u00a0Merricourt Wind Energy Center harnesses\u00a0some of our nation&#8217;s best wind resources to generate\u00a0clean,\u00a0low-cost energy. Its 75 Vestas wind turbines produce enough energy to power 65,000 homes annually.
