Valley City, ND\u00a0 (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2012)\u00a0 Valley City\u00a0officials are\u00a0 ordering Valley City residents to limit water usage until further notice, while repairs are being made to the Master Sewage Lift Station.<\/p>\n

Water is safe for drinking.<\/p>\n

Mayor Bob Werkhoven\u00a0 urges residents to refrain from using water for such purposes as showering, laundry, dish washing and flushing of toilets until further notice.<\/p>\n

He says\u00a0 residents downstream should not use the Sheyenne River,\u00a0as the\u00a0raw sewage is being pumped into the river, through a temporary pipe.<\/p>\n

Valley City officials\u00a0\u00a0are estimating the repair should completed by Monday.<\/p>\n

\u00a0An equipment failure at\u00a0the master lift station occurred shortly midnight, Thursday, during maintenance, \u00a0filling up the lift station with\u00a0close to\u00a030 feet of\u00a0 sewage.<\/p>\n

\u00a0A backup system was put\u00a0on line within just a couple hours.<\/p>\n

JAMESTOWN, N.D. (AP& KCSi-T.V. News Aug 16, 2012) \u2013 A witness testifying in the case of a Jamestown man accused of killing a Somali immigrant says the woman allegedly tried to dispose the body in his well.<\/p>\n

Thirty-four-year-old Leron Howard is charged with murder and criminal conspiracy in the death of 18-year-old Abdi Ali Ahmed.<\/p>\n

His body was found in a ditch near Spiritwood on April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n

Authorities say he was beaten and stabbed.<\/p>\n

Delmonte Jones testified Thursday that Howard and 22-year-old Janelle Cave came to his home early in the morning of April 30, 2011.<\/p>\n

Jones says the two asked about Jones\u2019 well, saying they had a body to dispose of.<\/p>\n

Jones said he did not believe them and sent them away.<\/p>\n

Jones was also questioned by court-appointed defense attorney, Steven Mottinger about selling marijuana to Howard and Cave, to which he replied, “no.”<\/p>\n

Mottinger also asked Jones about a trip he, Howard and other individuals took to Montana and if marijuana was purchased.<\/p>\n

Jones replied by saying the group went to buy shoes and clothes in Montana, but he could not recall the name of the city or the mall where they shopped.<\/p>\n

A jury earlier convicted Cave on manslaughter and criminal conspiracy charges.<\/p>\n

She is serving an 11-year sentence, which is being appealed in the North Dakota Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

As part of her sentence, Cave must testify in Howard\u2019s trial.<\/p>\n

Howard\u2019s trial is continuing in Southeast District Court in Jamestown.<\/p>\n

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the cause
\nof a house fire that killed a retired Grand Forks attorney.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Neighbors say 86-year-old Fred Arnason lived alone in the home,
\nand relied on an oxygen tank to help him breathe.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The state fire marshal says the fire started Tuesday night in
\nArnason’s kitchen.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Arnason was an assistant Grand Forks county prosecutor in Grand
\nForks before he started a private law practice.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The North Dakota state Bar Association recognized Arnason this
\nyear as a 60-year member of the lawyers’ group.<\/p>\n

FARGO, N.D. (AP) \u2014 A North Dakota man sentenced to life in prison for his role in a drug ring is suing his public defender for $5 million.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Marcus Royston claims that defense attorney Steven Mottinger, of Fargo, did a poor job of representing him and has filed a legal malpractice suit in federal court.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Mottinger says Royston’s complaint is frivolous and should be dismissed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Royston was among eight people accused of distributing crack cocaine in North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota.<\/p>\n

\u00a0U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson said during sentencing that some of the evidence against Royston didn’t make sense, but had no choice but to hand down the mandatory life term.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Mottinger had argued that the life sentence was unfair because the accused ringleader in the case received 45 years.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s Health Department is
\nreporting a small surge in the number of reported cases of the West
\nNile virus.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The agency says 13 new human cases of the virus have been
\nidentified since the first one of the year was reported last week.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Five of the people who have been infected were put into the
\nhospital.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The virus is carried by mosquitoes.<\/p>\n

The Health Department’s Michelle Feist (FYST) says the West Nile virus has been relatively quiet for the last five years.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 But she says the dry and hot conditions that have prevailed this
\nsummer are good for the type of mosquito that carries the illness.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Health officials say people who are outdoors between dusk and
\ndawn should wear mosquito repellent and long-sleeved shirts and
\npants.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakot”s secretary of state says
\nsome signatures on the latest batch of initiative petitions are
\ntough to read – and that hampers the verification process.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Al Jaeger says he may ask the North Dakota Legislature to
\nrequire people who sign petitions to also print their names.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jaeger’s office is reviewing five initiative petitions with more
\nthan 130,000 signatures.<\/p>\n

They range from medical marijuana to a constitutional amendment on farmers’ rights.
\nPeople who sign petitions have to list their addresses, and workers ask some of them later to verify whether they signed the petition.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Jaeger says the process is more difficult when someone’s
\nsignature can’t be read.<\/p>\n

He says a requirement that a signer also print his or her name would make things easier.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – North Dakota’s securities commissioner
\nsays a purported oil investment company hasn’t followed state
\nrules.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Karen Tyler says New Hi-Tech Oil & Gas Discoveries LLC and its
\nalleged owner haven’t disclosed that they are the target of
\nregulatory actions in at least six other states.
\nThe other states claim the company and owner Dennis Stutes are
\nselling unregistered securities.<\/p>\n

In Hawaii, state regulators say some oil and gas ventures are being fraudulently marketed.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Tyler has issued an order telling the company and Stutes to quit
\ntrying to sell securities in North Dakota.
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The company and Stutes have addresses in Bismarck, San Jose,
\nCalif., and Tulsa, Okla.<\/p>\n

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – The president and chief executive officer of MDU Resources Group is retiring.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Terry Hildestad spent 38 years with the Bismarck-based company. It has interests in energy, mining, construction and electric and gas utility service.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The company says David Goodin will succeed Hildestad in January. Goodin is president and chief executive officer of MDU Resources’ four utility businesses.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hildestad began his career with the company in 1974. He was named president and CEO in 2006.
\n\u00a0
\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MDU has operations in 44 states. Its subsidiaries include Bismarck’s Montana-Dakota Utilities, Seattle-based Cascade Natural Gas Corp., and Idaho-based Intermountain Gas Co.

Speaking in Ohio, Mitt Romney’s running mate today said Obama’s campaign is marked by “frustration” and “anger.”<\/p>\n

Romney is stumping in South Carolina, and Obama will resume campaigning Saturday in New Hampshire.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) – A spokesman for the NATO coalition in Afghanistan says it’s investigating the cause of Thursday’s crash of a Black Hawk helicopter in Kandahar province that killed seven American troops and four Afghans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

U.S. officials say initial reports indicated that the chopper was not shot down.<\/p>\n

But the Taliban claim that their fighters did, in fact, shoot down the aircraft.<\/p>\n

U.S. officials say three of the seven Americans who were killed were special operations forces — two Navy SEALS and a Navy explosives expert.

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) – A Delaware pediatrician is denying allegations that he waterboarded his 11-year-old stepdaughter as part of his research into near-death experiences involving children.<\/p>\n

As Dr. Melvin Morse awaited the start of a preliminary hearing Thursday on child endangerment charges, he asked, “How could anybody do such a thing?” He also says he hasn’t “done near-death research in 15 years.”

\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) – A man who visited Yosemite National Park in California earlier this summer has died, and a woman is recovering, after contracting a rare disease carried by rodents.<\/p>\n

Park officials say both victims had been staying in tent cabins in a campground where the virus has been detected in deer mice.<\/p>\n
