News) \u2014 The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports a one vehicle accident Friday (Aug 2, 2013) about 9:25 a.m., on Highway 46, near Little Yellow Stone Park about 20 miles south of Valley City.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Brian Niewind reports a 1990 Kenworth, towing a belly-dump trailer, operated by 49 year old Patrick McMahon, of Lisbon was westbound on Hwy. 46 entering the Sheyenne River Valley near Little Yellowstone Park, approximately 20 miles south of Valley City.<\/p>\n<p>The unit was westbound on the roadway on the east side of the river valley, traveling on a sharp downward grade. It was traveling at an unknown rate of speed when McMahon made a hard brake application and lost control, entering the north ditch of Hwy. 46, and then vaulted over an approach and came to rest in the north ditch on its wheels.<\/p>\n<p>McMahon remained in the cab of the truck during the crash. The driver was transported to Mercy Hospital in Valley City with non-life threatening injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The Kenworth was towing an empty, 1997 homemade gravel trailer.<\/p>\n<p>The damage estimate was $15,000.<\/p>\n<p>The crash remains under investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Assisting at the scene were the\u00a0 Barnes County Ambulance Service, Barnes County Sheriff\u2019s Office and the Ft. Ransom Fire Department.<br \/>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>JAMESTOWN SANITARY SEWER CONSTRUCTIONUPDATES FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 5, 2013<\/p>\n<p>Jamestown, ND (KCSi-T.V. News)\u00a0 &#8212;\u00a0\u00a0 Interstate Engineering reports,\u00a0\u00a0work continues on the Jamestown sanitary sewer project. Residents are asked to be aware of the following work that will be taking place during the week of August 5.<\/p>\n<p>4th Avenue NW Closure:<\/p>\n<p>4th Ave NW is closed from 6th St NW to 9th St NW and is expected to open toward the end of the week of August 5. Starting Monday, August 5, a small segment will be open at 8th St NW to provide access to Washington Elementary School.<\/p>\n<p>3rd Ave NW Closures:<\/p>\n<p>3rd Ave NW is currently closed from 6th St NW to 7th St NW. On Tuesday, August 6, 3rd Ave NW will be closed from 7th St NW to 8th St NW. Then on Thursday, August 8, 3rd Ave NW will be closed from 8th St NW to 9th St NW. A small segment at 8th St NW will remain open during this time.<\/p>\n<p>3rd Ave NW, at the intersection of 5th St NW, will open to local traffic on Saturday, August 3.<\/p>\n<p>Work is expected to last for about two weeks. A detour on 2nd Ave NW will be in place.<\/p>\n<p>3rd St NW Closure:<\/p>\n<p>Starting on Monday, August 5, 3rd St NW will be closed at the intersection of 2nd Ave NW. This section of 3rd St NW will be open to local traffic only.<\/p>\n<p>Work is expected to last through Wednesday, August 7. During this time, 2nd Ave NW will remain open.<\/p>\n<p>At Historic Franklin School, home for CSi, the project will border the entire south side and east side. When the east side is closed to traffic, visitors and customers can enter through the south entrance, or enter the parking lot from 4<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue Southwest, to be able to access the elevator entrance.<\/p>\n<p>Motorists are asked to slow down and use caution in construction areas. (AP) &#8211; A North Dakota man has pleaded guilty to animal abuse charges for the deaths of more than 100 horses.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 William Kiefer, who has homes in Fargo and New Salem, is charged with nine counts of overworking, mistreating or abandoning animals. Each charge carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nSouth Central District Judge Tom Schneider ordered a presentence investigation.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Authorities seized more than 150 animals from Kiefer&#8217;s properties in the two counties in January after finding nearly 100 dead animals. The seized animals were then adopted out.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Investigators say Kiefer failed to provide necessary food, water and shelter to his animals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fargo, N.D. (KCSi-T.V. News Aug 2, 2013) &#8212; Four North Dakota men were presented with the North Dakota Highway Patrol Colonel\u2019s Award of Excellence for their courageous efforts to save a woman from a car fire in March 2013. Kent Severson of Gardner, Timothy Springer of Argusville, Jonathan Magnell and Mitch Goodmanson, both of Harwood, were recognized with the award.<\/p>\n<p>On March 15 at 7:45 a.m., a woman was traveling on I-29 when she noticed flames coming from the rear of her vehicle. Marjorie Branden pulled onto the shoulder and became trapped inside her vehicle. She attempted to escape her vehicle but was overcome by smoke filling the cabin of her vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>The four men, who were traveling individually on I-29, stopped and sprang into action.<\/p>\n<p>Putting their own safety at risk, the men combined their efforts and successfully extracted Branden from her vehicle by breaking out a window, cutting her seat belt and lifting her through the broken window. After successfully removing her from the vehicle, the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. Without their selfless actions, the outcome could have been far different.<\/p>\n<p>Severson, Springer, Magnell and Goodmanson were presented with a coin displaying an engraving of the American bald eagle surrounded by the North Dakota Badlands, the Little Missouri River and the profile of Sioux warrior Red Tomahawk. Each coin is original and unique to North Dakota. The NDHP Colonel\u2019s Award of Excellence is awarded to North Dakota state employees and private citizens for efforts and activities that benefit the North Dakota Highway Patrol, the State of North Dakota and its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u3000FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; Farm real estate in North Dakota has increased in value by 36 percent.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Agriculture Department says in a new report that the value of farm land and buildings in 2013 averaged $1,690. That is up $450 per acre.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cropland value increased 41 percent from last year to $1,910 per acre. Pastureland value was $630 per acre, up $140.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Cash rent paid to landlords in 2013 for cropland increased from last year. Irrigated cropland rent averaged $165 per acre, an increase of $29. Dry land cropland rent averaged $64 per acre, up $7.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Pasture rented for cash, which averaged $15 per acre, is up $1 from the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) &#8211; North Dakota Republican Sen. John Hoeven has been named to a conference committee that will try and negotiate an agreement on a 2013 farm bill.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hoeven is a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee. He says Congress needs to get a long-term farm bill in place this fall.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Senate voted in June to pass its version of the legislation. The House passed its bill last month. Now the two sides will work together on a final product.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The House has not named its conferees for the bill.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Hoeven says he plans to hold roundtables with agriculture groups in North Dakota later this month.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FARGO, N.D. (AP) &#8211; A prominent North Dakota potato farmer who&#8217;s among a group of people accused in an alleged price-fixing scheme is suing his insurance company for failing to cover his defense costs.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Ron Offutt, of Fargo, is among the defendants in a federal lawsuit filed by Associated Wholesale Grocers Inc. against United Potato Growers of America, its affiliate United Potato Growers of Idaho and other parties.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The suit accuses potato growers of driving up prices while spying on farmers with satellites and aircraft fly-overs to enforce strict limits on production. (AP) &#8211; Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Charles Murphy says he will not seek re-election.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Murphy&#8217;s current stint leading the Dakotas tribe began in 2009. He also served as chairman from 1983-93 and from 1997-2005.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The 64-year-old Murphy says he&#8217;s not sure what he&#8217;ll do when he retires from public life, though he hopes to do some traveling.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Standing Rock Reservation straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In world and national news&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0WASHINGTON (AP) &#8211; Even though the unemployment rate is down to 7.4 percent, Friday&#8217;s jobs report points to a less-than-robust job market. Employers added 162,000 jobs in July, the smallest number since March. It suggests that the economy&#8217;s sub-par growth, combined with modest consumer spending, may be making some businesses cautious about hiring.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WASHINGTON (AP) &#8211; Lawmakers from both parties say it&#8217;s a wise move. They&#8217;re reacting to the State Department&#8217;s decision to issue a global travel alert &#8212; warning Americans of the potential for terrorism, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa. The threat also prompted the State Department to close embassies and consulates this weekend in the Muslim world. One Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee says the information that led to today&#8217;s travel alert is more than just the &#8220;regular chit chat&#8221; that is picked up from would-be militants on the Internet or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NORFOLK, Va. (AP) &#8211; Both pilots are OK after two Air National Guard fighter jets clipped wings in midair last night off the Virginia coast. One of the pilots ejected into the ocean, and was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter a few hours later. The other was able to fly back to the base in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 MIAMI (AP) &#8211; A Miami-area woman is accused of repeatedly drugging her adult autistic son and locking him in a filthy room with iron bars inside her mobile home, so she could spend time with her boyfriend. The woman (Gladys Jaramillo) is facing charges including aggravated abuse and false imprisonment. Police say the 30-year-old man was left without food, water or access to a bathroom or telephone.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ORLANDO, Fla.
